the operations roomMember Information - <strong>College</strong> Activity - Best PracticesSpecial Event Kits available forNational Nursing Week – May 6-12Planning an event for National Nursing Week?Hundreds <strong>of</strong> events will be held throughout <strong>Alberta</strong> during NationalNursing Week, May 6-12, and once again, the CLPNA is supportingthese celebrations with complimentary Special Event Kits. SpecialEvent Kits contain LPN-branded items, such as lip balms, pens, bags,etc., for distribution to LPNs as door prizes or other gifts at theseevents.National Nursing Week is an opportunity for nurses, their employersand the public to stop, reflect and celebrate the contribution <strong>of</strong> thenursing pr<strong>of</strong>ession.In 1971, the International Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nurses</strong> (ICN) designated May12 – Florence Nightingale’s birthday – as International <strong>Nurses</strong> Day.In 1985, in recognition <strong>of</strong> the dedication and achievements <strong>of</strong> thenursing pr<strong>of</strong>ession, the Canadian minister <strong>of</strong> health proclaimed thesecond week <strong>of</strong> May as National <strong>Nurses</strong> Week.Special Event Kits are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.Product type and number <strong>of</strong> items in each Kit depends on thenumber <strong>of</strong> expected LPN attendees and number <strong>of</strong> requests receivedby CLPNA. NOTE: There is no guarantee <strong>of</strong> receiving one item perattendee.Special Event Kit Request Forms are available fromwww.clpna.com or by contacting info@clpna.com or 780-484-8886.Request Deadline is April 5 with delivery <strong>of</strong> packages in mid-April.Council Welcomes NEW Public MemberOn January 23, 2013, a Government <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong> Order <strong>of</strong> Council appointed Gary Christophersonto a three-year term as a public member to the Council <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Licensed</strong> <strong>Practical</strong> <strong>Nurses</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong> (CLPNA). Christopherson has extensive board experience and a Masters in PublicAdministration. His background includes business economic development, marketing and innovation.The Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Act requires the provincial government to appoint public representatives to sit onCLPNA Council to represent the views <strong>of</strong> the people <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong>.clpna.comcare | spring 2013 31
