INTRODUCTION1.2 Our New Visual Identity SystemTop universities employ strategic, well-executedcommunications to help build their excellence—andgraphic identity is a prime element of effective marketingand communications. To that end, the University ofMiami is introducing a new visual identity system. The heart of the new identity system is the University’ssplit-U mark, the “spirit” mark that is the most wellknownlogo associated with the University of Miami. It isone of the most recognizable collegiate marks nationally, and perhaps the most ubiquitous graphic symbolthroughout South Florida.Research conducted on the new identity, whichincluded focus groups in three major cities and an alumnisurvey, affirmed the positive attributes of the split-Umark. It is perceived as diverse, modern, confident, andbold. By employing this singular image, the Universitywill capitalize on the power of a new identity thatlinks schools, colleges, centers, and institutes whilerepresenting the institution as a whole.By its very nature, a university is a consolidatedassembly; the strength and quality of each part reflectsupon the whole as well as other individual units. Thepower of a cohesive and consistently applied graphicidentity is an important tool that helps reinforce ourmessage and presence and thereby serves to advancethe University.University of Miami Visual Identity Manual May 28, 2009
