ThomasJefferson FreeFrank Signature onan Envelope Sentto MonticelloSimply put, ThomasJefferson is one of the mostinfluential Americans, yet heremains one of the greatestenigmas among major figuresin American History.Jefferson was a writer, anarchitect, scientist, violinist,farmer, lawyer, statesmanand a reluctant politiciantwice elected to the Presidentof the United States. Yet hewas never able to reconcilethe contradiction within hisown life, as he remained aslaveholder until his death in1826. With quill in hand on ahumid afternoon inPhiladelphia, Jefferson wroteperhaps the most celebratedsentence in AmericanHistory, ”We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, thatthey are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among theseare Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The shy student of theEnlightenment, Jefferson was always more comfortable putting pen to paper thanspeaking in public, so the offered free frank envelope is a fantastic example for theJeffersonian collector.DAY ONE - SEPT 29, 2010Measuring 3-1/2” acrossby 5” high, this piece ofhistory traveled fromWashington DC toJefferson’s home atMonticello on December1, 1808. The letter wassent to Mr. JamesDinsmore, an Irish immigrantwho was responsiblefor most of the elegantwoodwork at Monticello.The signature rests in theupper left portion of theenvelope 1/2” front the leftborder and a 1/2” from thetop. The Jefferson scriptwas penned in black inkand reads, “Th. JeffersonPr. US.” and grades an(“8”). Beneath the signatureis the postmark,“WASHn. CITY, Dec 1”with Mr. James Dinsmore,Monticello near Miltonwritten in Jefferson’s hand.The Jefferson signaturewith the added Pr. US. (President of the United States) helps to date the pieces, asDinsmore left Monticello in April of 1809. The original letter from Jefferson toDinsmore is currently in the University of Virginia’s archives. Vintage Declaration of Independence Red Silk, Circa 1826Offered is a wondrous Declaration of Independence silk, circa 1826, that includes the document, facsimilesignature of the signers surrounded by the seals of the thirteen colonies and the names of adozen generals. The red silk 25x18 banner was most likely produced for the 50th Anniversary celebrationof our beloved Declaration of Independence. The artifact shows moderate wear, five small holesand a 3” tear (repaired) near the Liberty Bell at the top. The 35x24 relic is mounted on a burlap clothin a vintage “arts and craft” style, wooden frame.Opening Bid $150.00491. “Atom Man vs. Superman” Movie Poster With (4)Cast Member SignaturesFending off evil in many forms, Superman faced a mighty challenge in the 1950 productionof Atom Man vs. Superman. The offered movie poster display is autographedby all four stars of that blockbuster. Framed to dimensions of 32-3/8 x 53-3/8” withblue-on-red matting, the stunning color reproduction portrays the caped hero in flight,in battle and rescuing love interest Lois Lane. Near the bottom, a black-and-white “Atthe mercy of Atom Man!” inset is autographed by Kirk Alyn. The first actor to portraySuperman, Alyn (d.1999) signed in blue ink (“9” strength) and inscribed “Super: BestWishes.” Symmetrically arranged just below the poster are the cut signatures of costarsNoel Neill (“10,” inscribed “Lois Lane”), Tommy Bond (d.2005, “9,” inscribed“Butch”) and Lyle Talbot (d.1996, “10,” inscribed “Best Wishes.
