BAKerFor all of Napa Valley’s world-renown as a wine-tasting destination,did you know that the valley also has one of only three “Old Faithful”geysers in the world?Located at the north end of the valley in Calistoga, Old Faithfulmakes for a fun and fascinating afternoon stop between wineries.About every 30 minutes, visitors to “the geysers” are treated to a firstrateshow – an eruption of steam and extremely hot water spraying 60to 100 feet in the air.The term “Old Faithful” refers to geysers that erupt on regular intervals.Water for the Old Faithful Geyser of California comes from anunderground river. When this water flows over the hot molten magmadeep in the earth, it boils, expands and then collects in large cavities.Under tremendous pressure from the heat, the superheated water isforced through the fractures and erupts with an outpouring of steamfollowed by hot spewing water.Old Faithful is surrounded bypalm trees and thick bamboo,making for a relaxing and partiallyshaded setting. There are picnictables with umbrellas and acovered seating area, all withexcellent views of the geyser. Thegift shop is stocked with snackssuch as ice cream bars, chips anda variety of drinks, or if you wantto make it a lunch stop, bring in apicnic lunch from town and abottle of wine from one of thenearby wineries!Don’t miss some of the otherinteresting features at OldFaithful. Check out the wishing44wells that were once used as hot mineral therapy pools. There’s also aninformative exhibit area on geyser eruptions and earthquake predictions,as well as a brief history of the town of Calistoga. And best of all,there’s a petting zoo with Tennessee Fainting Goats, Jacob’s Four HornSheep and Guard Llamas.Old Faithful Geyser of California is located at 1299 Tubbs Lane inCalistoga. The gift shop is a great place to find unique Old Faithfuland Napa Valley themed souvenirs, including mugs, shot and wineglasses, postcards, T- shirts and sweatshirts in adult and child sizes,hats and visors, keychains, water bottles, pens and much more.Old Faithful is open daily year round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in thewinter and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer.
