The <strong>Madison</strong> Library is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carroll County Library Cooperative, a group <strong>of</strong> arealibrarians that meets throughout <strong>the</strong> year to share ideas, training, and pursue cooperativeprograms and purchases. In 2011, libraries in CCLC were able to share expenses on <strong>the</strong> CareerCruising database for job seekers and post-secondary students, making it available for <strong>the</strong> firsttime to most area residents.The <strong>Madison</strong> Library, <strong>Madison</strong> Elementary School, Mustang Academy, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Madison</strong>Recreation Department cooperated on several programs in 2011. Mustang Academy studentsvisited <strong>the</strong> library each week during <strong>the</strong> spring and fall, and in <strong>the</strong> winter, <strong>the</strong> librarian visited<strong>the</strong> students, bringing new library books, games, and stories. <strong>Madison</strong> Elementary Schoolstudents visited <strong>the</strong> library during Read Across America week in <strong>the</strong> spring and signed up forlibrary cards. <strong>Madison</strong> Elementary also hosted a storytelling presentation by DuncanMacDougall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Children’s Literacy Foundation on <strong>the</strong> day he brought 122 new booksgranted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Madison</strong> Library. During <strong>the</strong> summer, <strong>the</strong> library invited children in <strong>Madison</strong>Recreation’s Summer Program to visit <strong>the</strong> library once a week, and <strong>the</strong> children in <strong>the</strong> programattended several library-sponsored programs, including a live reptile program, a presentationon Rome by <strong>the</strong> Wilkinses, and a Summer Readers storytelling and book distribution by <strong>the</strong>Children’s Literacy Foundation.Gifts and GrantsThe Friends <strong>of</strong> <strong>Madison</strong> Library purchased anew chair for <strong>the</strong> children’s room in 2011with funds raised at a <strong>Town</strong> Meeting bakesale. The chair—big enough for sharingstories—is a welcome addition, enjoyed bychildren and <strong>the</strong> adults who visit <strong>the</strong> librarywith <strong>the</strong>m. The Friends once again provided$1,500 for book purchases and $495 forcomputer s<strong>of</strong>tware expenses in 2011, funds<strong>the</strong>y raise through membership dues and at<strong>the</strong>ir Book Sale, held annually during OldHome Week.The <strong>Madison</strong> Library received a Pequawket Foundation grant in 2011 to fund materials for itsLocal History Preservation Project. In 2011, volunteers continued to organize and index <strong>the</strong>library’s local history collection. S<strong>of</strong>tware and hardware were purchased as plans andprocedures were developed and tested for digitization <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collection. Workcontinues on this project, and additional volunteers are welcome.The New Hampshire State Library, through its Kids, Books, and <strong>the</strong> Arts grant program,provided partial funding for a live reptile program held in August. The Friends <strong>of</strong> <strong>Madison</strong>Library provided <strong>the</strong> remainder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> funds needed. Over 70 people attended this popularevent.83
