population within the Recreation Services Department 

during the summer months 

We, as leaders today, not only focus on building 

beautiful physical facilities, but we also look to the impact our programs 

have on our young generation as “leaders of tomorrow,” to reach 

their greatest potential. We make every effort to provide innovative, community-based 

youth development programs through sports and other 

recreation activities. 

As parents, please look to the wide range of opportunities available to your 

families, not just a way to “keep your kids busy,” but rather as a pathway to

schools to serve the residents of the Greater 

Boca Raton area. The Community Schools offer a

PUPPY KINDERGARTEN 

For all puppies 10 weeks up to 5 months. Learn the basics of how to raise

Surf Camp counselors provide a fun, safe, and educational introduction 

to the sport of surfing. If you’ve attended camp before, you’ll 

have the chance to hone your skills! This Surf Camp is an amazing 

unique experience that you will never forget. No surfing experience 

necessary/must be able to swim.

Players will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of becoming an 

elite volleyball player. Session will include passing, setting, hitting 

and serving skills as well as information on offensive and defensive 

schemes. The difference between beach and indoor will be defined 

and explored. Player of all levels are welcome. All skill levels will be 

evaluated and divided up between courts.

The program consists of one-half hour of warm-up and skill drills, followed 

by a one-half hour game, every week. Every team has an assigned 

coach and each child is assigned a “B-Ball Buddy” to individually

game. All participating children receive an award after each weekly 

game. HIGH 5 is played on Sunday afternoons at the Sugar Sand Park

TOPSoccer is an outreach program of SABR and the u.S. Youth Soccer 

Association for young athletes with disabilities. The communitybased 

program is a modified version of the game, designed to provide

offers fascinating, interactive exhibits, programs, and camps designed 

to enhance 5 – 12 year old explorers’ understanding of everyday 

physical sciences. The Explorium is located inside the Sugar 

Sand Park Community Center. Admission is a suggested $5.00 donation 

per person. 

SCIENCE CAMP 2012 

Science Camp offers your child an exciting and fun opportunity to explore 

the world around us. 

“Water, Water Everywhere” is the theme for rising Kindergarteners. They 

will discover the wonders of water in our bodies, in the ground, in the air 

and more. 

Campers entering grades 1-5 will experience a different science theme 

each day with engaging experiments, activities and games. 

All camps are hands-on and emphasize active learning and fun. Science 

Camp is comprised of seven one-week sessions, running from June 18 – 

August 10. Camp will not be offered the week of July 4th. For registration 

and session information, refer to the Boca Raton Summer Camp 2012 brochure, 

available at City facilities, community schools, or the Explorium and 

City (www.myboca.us) websites. 

EXPLORIUM FOR EVERYONE 

The Explorium is a fun place to visit, and staff has paid special attention

Be advised that this dog park is an unsupervised recreational area of the City of Boca Raton’s Recreation Services Department. 

The use of the dog park is at your own risk. 

Dog owners are responsible for, and liable with respect to, the actions of their dogs and any damage or injury to person or property caused by same. 

Dogs and/or their owners who violate these rules are subject to removal from the park and possible suspension of the right to utilize the park. The City 

of Boca Raton reserves the right to refuse entry to dogs and/or their owners into Mizner Bark for the reasons of health, safety, and prior offenses or for the 

comfort of all patrons and/or their pets. 

Patrons of the park who engage in activities (i.e., playing ball, using remote controlled toys, etc.) not related to the dog park’s purpose or who violate any 

other guideline are liable for any damage or injury to persons, dogs, or property 

GUIDELINES FOR USE 

• Be polite. Scoop up the poop! Bag stations and trashcans are available throughout the dog park. 

• Remain in the dog park and in full view of your dog at all times. 

• Leash your dog prior to entering and upon leaving the dog park. 

• Aggressive behavior must be addressed immediately. Either move your dog to another part of the park or leave the park. 

• For safety reasons, children must be at least 4 feet tall and supervised by an adult to use the dog park. Children must behave in a 

responsible manner: no running, chasing dogs, or petting dogs without the owner’s permission. 

• No more than two dogs per person on any one visit. 

• Dog toys, leashes, etc. left in the park will be disposed of at the end of the day. The City accepts no responsibility or liability for such 

items. 

• Female dogs in heat or sick dogs cannot be brought into the park. 

• Dogs should be under voice control (i.e., come when called). 

• Dogs must be vaccinated and display current licenses on their collars. 

• Puppies under four (4) months of age are prohibited. 

• Spayed/neutered animals are recommended. 

• No food, treats, alcoholic beverages (soft drinks and water are allowed), strollers, bicycles, or children’s toys are allowed in the dog 

park. This is a recreation park for dogs accompanied by their owners. 

• Playing catch (i.e., football, baseball, etc.) or using remote controlled toys, which can cause harm to the dogs in the park, is not allowed. 

• Choke, prong, pinch, and spike collars must be removed inside park area. 

• Professional dog trainers are not permitted to use this facility for training. 

• Persons in violation of these rules may be required to leave the dog park. 

• Use of this facility shall be for a dog park; any other use is prohibited. 

• All incidents and injuries must be reported to the Recreation Services Department by calling (561) 393-7810 weekdays; 8:00am –

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a distinctive part of the City’s parks system. 

The Center is surrounded by a rare remnant of coastal hammock, located 

on Boca Raton’s barrier island. A boardwalk provides access to this unique 

tropical forest where, from the 40-foot observation tower, you can view 

gumbo limbo trees, migrating birds, Indian middens, the ocean, and the 

Intracoastal Waterway. Construction of our NEW outdoor sea tanks was 

completed in early 2012! Friends of Gumbo Limbo is raising money to 

“Fill the Tanks” with sea life, habitat, and educational interpretive signage 

and exhibits. An informal garden attracts butterflies throughout the year. 

Indoor displays feature wildlife indigenous to South Florida and a panorama 

of stained glass windows depicting the coastal island as it may have 

appeared in the 1500’s. Florida Atlantic university maintains an onsite 

marine biology research laboratory with a gallery above the lab allowing 

visitors to see projects conducted by university scientists. Visit the Gift 

Shop for educational and fun nature books, toys, puzzles, t-shirts, jewelry 

and much more. 

SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS 

School science field trip programs are offered to grades 3, 5, and 7 on every

3rd Grade: Beach Explorers: Students are introduced to the importance 

of Florida’s coastal ecosystems. Through classroom and laboratory experiences, 

and a trip to Red Reef Park for beachcombing, they learn about 

coastal plants and animals, weathering and erosion, waves and currents. 

5th Grade: Eco-Investigators: Students are introduced to interdependence 

of plants and animals. While gathering evidence to solve a mystery, 

they learn about the interrelationships between organisms found on a 

barrier island, collect data, and conduct systematic observations using 

stereoscopes and other tools. 

7th Grade: Mangrove Marine Science: Students are introduced to taxonomy 

while experiencing the biodiversity of the mangrove ecosystem. 

Wading in the Intracoastal with seine and dip nets, students study marine 

life of “the ocean’s nursery.” In the science laboratory, they use stereoscopes 

to make observations and classify representative samples of major 

taxonomic groups.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS 

Sea Bathers Eruption (Sea Lice) 

What is it? Ocean bathers report red welts and blotches, which 

are concentrated under the swimsuit and other parts of the 

body after swimming in the ocean. Itching and redness usually 

occur several hours after ocean bathing. Some experience a 

slight “prickling” sensation while they are in the water. This occurs 

mostly from April to July. 

Symptoms: Itching -- usually lasts 2-4 days, but it can last as 

long as 2 weeks. Some people have more severe reactions, 

including headache, fever, nausea and infected blisters. Children 

may develop high fever. 

Prevention: Make sure you change out of your bathing suit 

before showering. This may reduce your risk for sea bather’s 

eruption by half. 

Treatment: An oral antihistamine may help to relieve the itching. 

Also, an over-the-counter topical 1% cortisone cream or 

sting aid may be helpful. With severe reactions or complications,

Vehicles entering Silver Palm Park towing a watercraft trailer are required to obtain a BOAT LAuNCH and RECOVERY PERMIT or a ONE DAY 

VISITOR PERMIT. Permits are valid for a one year period (October 1 through September 30) and are not prorated. un-permitted vehicles with 

watercraft trailers are subject to a $25 fine and towing at owner’s expenses. 

Permits may be purchased at Boca Raton Community Center, James A. Rutherford Community Center, Sugar Sand Community Center. (See Beach Permit 

Information on page 47 for hours and location.) Permits are not transferable and must be permanently affixed to the bottom left front of the interior 

windshield glass ofthe vehicle in order to be admitted into the park. Any transfer of the permit will result in revocation. Vehicles without permits properly 

affixed to the windshield glass will not be allowed to enter the park until permits are properly affixed. Permit CANNOT be taped to windshield glass 

or placed on paper or transparencies. 

A ONE-DAY visit will require the boater to obtain a daily permit at one of the above locations prior to launching water-craft. Daily permits must be hung 

on rear-view mirror, visible for review. A ONE-DAY visitor permit expires 24 hours after issuance.

HOW TO OBTAIN PERMIT: 

Applicants are required to provide a document from both #1 & 2: 

1. Present their official state motor vehicle registration, or title, or current bill of sale, or rental/lease agreement (with applicant’s name) for each vehicle. 

2. Prove residency in Palm Beach County by providing one of the following current documents showing resident’s name and Palm Beach County 

address: current driver’s license, city/county tax bill, unpaid telephone bill, water deposit receipt, Florida power/light bill, rental or lease agreement, 

notarized letter from condo association. 

3. university students and faculty residing on campus in Palm Beach County may establish proof of residency by submitting a signed letter by the Director 

of Housing, certifying campus residency. 

Field Rental Fees 

The following fees will be charged for issuing a permit for all groups, other than Independent Youth Sports Associations and Youth Travel Teams, requesting 

usage of an athletic field owned by the City of Boca Raton. Fees and inventory of fields available for rental subject to change. 


• Baseball/Softball Field $20 per hour $110 per hour 

• Soccer/Football Field $25 per hour $140 per hour 

• Basketball Courts(Woodlands Park) 

Volleyball Courts(Meadows Park – Sand Court): $13 per hour $70 per hour 

• Batting Cage $10.25 per hour $30.75 per hour 

For miscellaneous additional services (drag, line, paint fields), please call for rates. 

1.For up to 2 uses per month,permit will be based on single person residency status. 

2.Game, league, tournament, multiple or continuous usage residency status will be determined by roster submitted with residency being based on 66% 

3.Refunds will be made for permits cancelled by the Athletics Department due to inclement weather causing field closure prior to reserved time. 

4.Resident– Resides in the City of Boca Raton or Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District.

LAKE WYMAN PARK 

Demonstration Park Project 

The City of Boca Raton held 

a ribbon-cutting ceremony 

recently in recognition of the 

newly-completed renovations 

and improvements at Lake 

Wyman Park. The 8.3-acre park 

is located at 1500 NE 5th Avenue. 

The Park improvements were 

made possible through funding 

from the City and the u.S. 

Department of Energy for the 

American Recovery and Reinvestment 

Act of 2009 – Energy 

Efficiency and Conservation 

Block Grant (EECBG) Program. 

The Grant Program was a Presidential 

priority to deploy the 

cheapest, cleanest, and most 

reliable energy technologies 

we have across the country. 

In keeping with this priority 

and the City’s own initiative to 

be a leader in community sustainability 

and environmental 

stewardship, staff chose 

Lake Wyman Park as a model 

to demonstrate some of the 

technologies available to create 

a sustainable public facility. 

Some of the elements include; 

a Wind Spire, Reflective Surfaces, 

Solar Compactors, Pervious 

& Porous Pavers, Xeriscape 

Landscaping, Rain Barrels and 

a Restroom Facility complete 

with Solar Panels, Skylight, Low 

Flo Fixtures, constructed with 

recycled material. Additionally, 

new playground equipment 

and a new fitness trail were installed 

which were made from 

recycled material.
