Eventually, local officials resolvedthe problem and were able to announce a winner ofthe race. 439Onslow County, NCThe Jacksonville Daily News reported that “there werea significant number of votes missing⎯approximately 4,000” after a “tabulator broke” onelection night. Rose Whitehurst, director of thecounty board of elections, said ““[w]hen we startedlooking over the report, we found that the votesdidn't all go into the software,’ . . . . ‘We starteddoing an audit and ran through the in<strong>for</strong>mation (andfound that) both one-stops weren't counted.’” Nofurther in<strong>for</strong>mation regarding the missing votes wasprovided. 440Mecklenburg & Wake Counties, NCLocal news station, News 14, reported that due to a“problem” with an optical scanner, certain votes inthe primary election were counted twice.
