Local election officials told the paper that testinglater indicated that <strong>for</strong> every 100 votes cast <strong>for</strong>Thompson, the machines subtracted approximatelyone vote <strong>for</strong> her. According to voters, the machinewould initially display an “x” aside Thompson’sname, but the “x” would disappear seconds later.One voter said it took him about 4 or 5 attemptsbe<strong>for</strong>e he successfully voted <strong>for</strong> Thompson. It wasimpossible to determine whether lost votes wereintended <strong>for</strong> Thompson or whether other candidatesalso lost votes. 499Pierce County, WAThe News Tribune reported that new vote tabulationsoftware ran so slowly in Pierce Co. that technicianshad to add memory to the computer system.Election results were delayed. 500Snohomish County, WAAccording to KING 5 News, voters in at least fourpolling precincts reported that they experienced voteswitchingerrors. They explained that the reviewscreen showed they had chosen the opposingcandidate. It took several attempts <strong>for</strong> each voter tocorrect the mistakes. Review screens showed that thecorrect candidates had been selected. SnohomishCounty elections official Bob Terwilliger reportedthat the problem only occurred in 15 out of 950electronic voting machines throughout the county. 501Marion County, WVThe Times West Virginian reported that initially“4,600 early votes could not be counted because of aglitch in the PEB reading software.” An ES&Stechnician was on hand but some were frustrated bythe technician’s per<strong>for</strong>mance: “‘I’m very frustratedwith the fact that we had an ES&S technician hereand he couldn’t get the machine to tally the earlyvotes,’ said Commission [sic] Randy Elliott.”Eventually the problem was resolved, and electionBrennan Center <strong>for</strong> Justice | 93
