For theerection and use of scaffolds we refer to the provisions under the general regulations for occupational health and safety.As part of the instructions for erection and use, we provide erectors and users with the necessary information derivedfrom our own accident hazard analyses to comply with the regulations for occupational health and safety in eachparticular situation of assembly and/or use. The technical details given in these instructions for erection and use,which are intended to assist erectors and users in complying with occupational health and safety regulations, do notconstitute any mandatory specifications. Erectors and/or users must carry out their own accident hazard analyses andtake all necessary precautions to comply with occupational health and safety regulations according to their own bestjudgement. Here, the special conditions of each individual project must be taken into account. Modular scaffolding <strong>RUX</strong>-VARIANT1 GeneralModular scaffolding <strong>RUX</strong>-VARIANT2 Special provisions1 General1.1 These instructions for erection and use release the erector of the scaffold from the obligation to test thesuitability of <strong>RUX</strong>-VARIANT modular scaffold, in connection with the standard designs examined, by submittingseparate structural analysis verification. The scaffolding contractor who takes on the job of erecting thescaffold, must ensure strict adherance to the instructions contained herein as well as to the mode ofassembly when using this manual.1.2 This manual is not a substitute for any permits that may be required in connection with construction projects.1.3 This manual is to be presented to the Construction Supervisory Authorities in the form of a transcript orphotostat copy.1.4 Scaffolds may only be erected by contractors who possess the necessary expert knowledge and experience inthis field as well as appropriate equipment, and who employ sufficiently qualified staff. Erection, conversion anddismantling of <strong>RUX</strong>-VARIANT modular scaffolds may only be carried out under professional supervision and bysufficiently qualified staff specially trained for such tasks and familiarized with the individual project. During allwork on scaffolds, the occupational health and safety regulations must be observed and complied with. Thismanual provides instructions for assembly and dismantling. If this scaffolding system is used for scaffoldsdeviating from the designs described in this manual, the deviations must be measurable according to the technicalconstruction regulations and the provisions of the National Technical Approval No. Z-8.22-19, and mustbe verified in each individual case. The scaffolding contractor must inspect each scaffold upon completion.Scaffolds and parts of scaffolds that are not yet completed must be barred, marked with a “no admittance”prohibition sign and cordoned off effectively.1.5 In each individual case where this manual is used, it must be made available at the place of use (constructionsite) in the form of a transcript or photostat copy.1.6 These instructions for the erection and use of the <strong>RUX</strong>-VARIANT modular scaffold have been compiled withoutprejudice to the rights of third parties.1.7 For publication purposes, the manual may only be reproduced in full, and complete with the appropriateappendices. Publication in the form of extracts requires the express consent of GÜNTER <strong>RUX</strong> GmbH, Hagen.1.8 This manual has been compiled taking present technological levels into account.2 Special provisions2.1 General2.1.1 Scope of validityThe <strong>RUX</strong>-VARIANT scaffolding system is created from prefabricated components as described in Chapter 2.1.4.These instructions for use and erection apply to scaffolding systems comprising work and safety scaffolds,scaffold towers, scaffold staircase towers and surface-oriented, spatial scaffolds as per DIN 4420. Thismanual also regulates the erection, use and dismantling of the aforementioned scaffolds.2.1.2 Constructional regulations2.1.3 DesignIf not otherwise provided in the following, the generally applicable technical construction regulations, in particular DIN 4420, parts 1 and 4, apply to the use of the scaffold system and the manufacture of itscomponents.The <strong>RUX</strong>-VARIANT modular scaffolding is a system scaffolding comprising prefabricated components. Itconsists of individual bars (standards and transoms/ledgers and/or frames with integrated means ofconnection). The bay lengths are 0.65 m, 1.0 m, 1.5 m. 2.0 m, 2.5 m, 3.0 m and 4.0 m. The frames are of1.0 m width. The standards and frames are equipped, at intervals of 0.5 m and 0.25 m, with welded, dishedflanges. Ledgers or transoms, equipped with welded hooks at the ends, are placed in the flanges and lockedin position by wedges. Vertical and horizontal diagonals equipped with riveted, hinged hooks can also be fittedto the flanges by means of wedges. The scaffolds are onlyto be erected, converted and dismantled by persons appropriately qualified and trained and who are fullyacquainted with the mode of erection of the scaffold system. The erection, conversion and dismantling work isto be permanently monitored by a supervisor. This person is also especially responsible for checking thecondition of the components in accordance with Chapter 2.2.2.2.3.4 TyingThe constructural elements for connecting the tie holders to the structure are not the subject of these instructionsfor erection and use. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that such elements safely absorb anddistribute the forces emanating from the tie holders. In doing so, vertical forces are not to be transmitted. Inindividual cases, the tie in the structure is to be checked using suitable testing instruments, and the resultsrecorded appropriately (Ill. 2-1).Prior to starting work on scaffolds, the contractor responsible must carry out a risk analysis. The form enclosedwith these instructions may be used for this purpose. It does not claim, however, to contain a complete list ofall conceivable risks that can occur in scaffolding work. Therefore it remains the responsibility of the contractorto recognize any additional risks present on individual building sites and take all necessary precautions toensure adequate safety standards and to protect the health of workers.2.2.2 Condition of componentsAll components must be checked prior to erection for perfect condition. Damaged components are not to beused.2.3 Construction2.3.1 General2.3.2 BaseComponents in accordance with Chapter 2.1.4 are to be used for scaffolds erected in line with these instructionfor erection and use. The scaffolding system may, in individual cases, be supplemented by steel tubes (to beconnected by means of couplers) as well as battens and planks. These items must be in line with DIN 4420,part 1 specifications.The <strong>RUX</strong>-VARIANT modular scaffolding is only to be erected on ground of sufficient load bearing cpacity.If necessary, load distributing supports such as planks, sleepers or structural steel beams are to be placedunderneath. Levelling blocks are required when erecting scaffolds on sloping terrain. The componentsintended for this area of the scaffold are to be used. Only in exceptional cases are components such as steeltubes connected by means of couplers, as well as battens and planks as per DIN 4420, part 1 to be installed.2.3.6 StiffeningScaffolds must be stiffened. On facade scaffolds, the outer vertical plane parallel to the facade is to bestiffened by diagonals arranged either continuously or in tower form. In doing so, a maximum of five bays areto be assigned to one diagonal. Ledgers are to be fitted at base plate height or, in the case of base jacks, abovethe adjustor nut, in those bays where a diagonal connects. When tying facade scaffolds appropriately, and whenusing system decking, the fitting of longitudinal ledgers at decking level can be dispensed with in those baysin which no diagonals are connected. Facade scaffolds constructed from <strong>RUX</strong>-VARIANT modular scaffoldingwith non-system timber planks must always be erected with longitudinal ledgers at deck level. It may also benecessary to install horizontal diagonals at deck level on such structures. Scaffolds with a width of more than1.0 m must always be fitted with ledgers at deck level.2.3.7 DeckingThe decking (planks) is to be secured against unintentional displacement2.3.8 IdentificationThe components described in Chapter 2.1.4 are only to be used when they are marked with the manufacturer’s symbol andthe two last digits of the year in which they were manufactured. Components may also be used which are inline with these instructions on erection and use and which were manufactured, without the means of identificationmentioned in this chapter, prior to the publication of this manual.2.3.9 Verification of stabilityThe stability of scaffolds erected with the components described in Chapter 2.1.4 must be verified in eachindividual case or a structural type analysis must be submitted. The verification of stability is deemed to havebeen provided for the standard designs described in this manual.2.3.11 Ivergence from standard designsWhen the scaffolding system is used for scaffolds which diverge from the standard designs illustrated in theseinstructions for erection and use, then such divergences must be assessable in accordance with the technicalconstruction regulations and/or be verified in individual cases. In doing so, other tying patterns may also beemployed. The increased loads, e.g. emanating from– the increase in self-weight,– the increase in the surface influenced by wind forces,– increased live loadsare to be verified right into the ties and into the set-up plane (ground level). The influence of lifts and other liftinggear is also to be taken into account in the event that they are not operated independently of the scaffold.2.3.12 Provisions for verifiction in individual casesFacade scaffoldsThe untied vertical frames, or rows of standards, contained in tied horizontal lifts are held elastically in placeby system planks (decking) to prevent horizontal displacement at right angles to the facade. At a horizontal tiespacing of two bay lengths, this stiffening effect can be substituted, to a certain extent, by a movement spring.At bay lengths 3.00 m the spring stiffness c dependent upon the decking used, is– solid timber and steel planks c = 0.45 kN/cm,– aluminium planks c = 0.75 kN/cm,when the fitting of longitudinal ledgers at deck level is dispensed with.When system planks and longitudinal ledgers are used at deck level, the horizontal spring stiffness c cangenerally be set at c= 1.5 kN/cm for calculation purposes.2.3.10 Standard designsScaffolds are deemed to be of standard design within the context of these instructions for erection and usewhen constructed along the lines illustrated under point 4. They are dimensioned to cope with live loads as perDIN 4420. Prior to commencementof scaffolding work, a risk analysis must be carried out and appropriate precautions must be taken to minimisethe danger of falls.It is the task of supervisors responsible for the erection and dismantling of scaffolds to take appropriatemeasures to prevent falls and their consequences for the life and health of workers, in order to ensuremaximum safety, taking into consideration all aspects of practical feasibility, expediency and the actual risksinvolved. Where possible, collective protective measures must always take priority over individual measures.Rux recommends that assemblymen be protected against falls with personal safety equipment (PSE) duringerection, dismantling and conversion of modular scaffolding structures.
