Know Your Bottom LineThe Nail ExtensionVicki PetersPeople think of most nail technicians asartists, not accountants; however, the successfulones are both.I thought when I started doing nails Iwould never have to learn the computer orbalance my checkbook, because I always hadcash in my pocket. Saving that money for theend of the month was a challenge. I had tolearn how to budget <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>le my financesso I could pay the rent.Today it takes much more than justbalancing your checkbook, ittakes precise record keeping,knowing how much you canspend, what your servicescost <strong>and</strong> doing projections soyou know how to grow yourbusiness. The bottom lineshould always be in the backof your mind with everythingyou do.I learned about the bottomline the hard way when I worked at NailsMagazine. I ran the trade shows for them <strong>and</strong>had to deliver the bottom line on every eventI did. We did projections such as how manybooths we would sell <strong>and</strong> how many nailtechs would attend, <strong>and</strong> then I figured what Icould spend to market the show, pay salaries,etc.So with that experience I learned howto do the same in the salon. I based mycalculations on averaging one client per hour,working 40 hours per week, to equal 40clients a week if I were fully booked. Now Ihad to figure out what I was making per houron average. At the time, my fills were $26, fullsets <strong>and</strong> pedicures were $45 <strong>and</strong> half-hourmanicures were $15. So I figured my hourlyI learned aboutthe bottom linethe hard way...18 | NOVEMBER 2008 | NORTHWEST STYLIST & SALONwage was $28. So no matter what I did forservices my goal was $28 or better per hour.I would then subtract what I spent onsupplies <strong>and</strong> salon rent that month <strong>and</strong> get aclear figure on what I actually made for themonth. If my bookings were down I couldfigure how much I was down by dividingmy hourly wage into the week’s profits <strong>and</strong>that would tell me how many new clients Ineeded in order to keep my projected incomefor the month.Another thing that worked for me wasrecording my earnings on a daily basis rightin my appointment book. I would put theamount next to the client’s name with a slash<strong>and</strong> the amount of the tip (28/5) $28 for theservice, $5 tip. I would add that up at the endof the day <strong>and</strong> add the totalsacross at the end of the week.I would then carry over thetotal <strong>and</strong> add it to the nextweek. So every week I couldtell you exactly how muchmoney I made. Today someof us use computers or PDAsfor clients <strong>and</strong> you can use asimilar system, which is eveneasier. Some of us even useQuickBooks, which is a great program for asmall business.As a small business or as a salon owner,knowing your bottom line keeps you on trackfor growth <strong>and</strong> controlling expenses. Weshould all know exactly what we are spendingto make money <strong>and</strong> have a plan to grow ourbusinesses. Sitting <strong>and</strong> waiting for the phoneto ring is not enough these days, take action.Being smart, having your thumb on thepulse of your bottom line will give you morecontrol for the future.
