Issue 4 April, 2010www.isikcollege.vic.edu.auDeputy Principal’s MessageDear Parents & Friends,Welcome back to school. It’s always great tocatch up with friends and colleagues duringthe holiday break. I would hope that everybodyenjoyed the lovely autumn weather. When school starts of course the weathergets colder. As usual students are expectedto wear their school jumpers and jackets oncold days. Please be reminded that studentsare permitted to wear their own coats onduring winter. This term the calendar is yet again busy. This year as part of our numeracy projectwe are working with Sue Fine, a numeracyconsultant, who will help us develop a purposefulmathematics programs. On CurriculumDay teachers had the opportunity toplay some strategic maths games introducedby Sue. Don’t be surprised if you hear yourchild say they’ve been playing awesomegames in Maths. In fact, I’m sure some ofthose anti-maths students might just startto plead for more maths.LOTE Week certainly made an impact thisyear. The Turkish department really demonstratedtheir talents promoting greaterawareness of the mother language and theChildren’s Festival. Thank you to all theLOTE staff and parent volunteers for makingit a special event. The grade 5’s have hopefully recoveredfrom an adventure at PhillipIsland. Last week I had the opportunityto visit the students on campand as always our students demonstratedexemplary behaviour. I enjoyedthe activities as much as thechildren. The tenacity and the smilesencouraged me to overcome my fearof heights and to take a turn crateclimbing. Sadly this year the grade6’s will no longer be camping in Canberra, instead they will be off toLady Northcote, in Bacchus Marsh. I’m afirm believer that camping and travellinghelps develop real life skills and an appreciationof the natural beauty of our country.ISIK COLLEGEPrimary NewsletterIt’s always good to have the opportunityto meet parents before the end of theterm during Parent Teacher Interviewdays. It’s always best to speak to theteacher if you have any concerns regardingthe curriculum such as projects, homework or tests. The holidays provideample time for families to review, reflectand set new goals for the next term.Term 2 is ten weeks long and is certainlymore demanding. The grade 3 and 5 studentswill soon be taking part in theNAPLAN. A number of students will alsobe partaking in the UNSW ICAS competitionsalso. I am confident that all studentswill do their personal best. Resultswill be available in term 3.Finally, I’d like to congratulate our counsellor,Mrs Burcu Goksu who has recentlytied the knot. We wish the couple a blissfuland blessed partnership. Unfortunately,Mrs Sibel Orka will no longer bewith us this year. We wish her all thebest with the birth of baby girl DilaraNur.Regards,Ms Evla HanEastmeadows CampusGoulburn St, Broadmeadows,3047Ph : 9309 0388Fax : 9309 0377Important Dates:* 26 Apr: Turkuaz TurkishBook Fair Week* 30 Apr: ‘Bully Bull Ring’Drama incursion* 3 May : Anti Bullying Week* 9 May: Mothers Day* 10 May: National VolunteersWeek* 11—13 May:NAPLAN* 17 May: Fruit& Veg & EducationWeek* 19 May: Grade 6 Camp* 21 May: National Maths Day* 30 May: Open Day* 25 May: Red Nose DayFor those who like toplan ahead..* 4 June: Enrolment renewalsDue* 9 June: ICAS Science* 14 June: Queens BirthdayHoliday* 16 June: ICAS Writing &Spelling
