Russell Wilkes BSc (Hons) Engineering Business Development 1994 After graduating, I gained employment locally with Penny & Giles (now Curtis Wright). While there I found the broad range of subjects I’d studied, from software and hardware to accountancy and marketing, placed me strongly for externally-facing roles, understanding customer requirements and transforming them into products. My role involved working with all the Formula 1 and GT Car teams on telemetry and analysis solutions. From there I moved into more specialist IT companies, focusing on winning projects and successful delivery. This led me to engage with many different companies looking to solve business challenges with people and IT. As the industry changed I progressed into outsourcing (BPO) where the opportunity to lead multi disciplined teams, focused on winning contracts, enabled me to build further on the management skills I learned during my years at Bournemouth University. I now lead large and complex outsource bids for European financial institutions, the most recent in excess of £600M. The mix of skills and qualifications I gained while studying at BU have truly made a measurable contribution to my career. Best of luck to everyone at BU. 20 | BU & Beyond Emma Robinson BA (Hons) Business Studies 1998 Since graduating, I qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant and have worked as a contractor for a number of years within industry at a strategic level, until I had my first child. Whilst not returning back to industry after children due to the heavy commitments of travelling, I decided to work in practice. This gave me the flexibility I needed to work around the children as well as giving the firm an advantage of having someone that has worked on the ‘clients’ side of the fence, someone who can see the practical issues that are not experienced whilst working in practice. This led me to helping SMEs develop their business especially in these poor economic times. I now work as a business development consultant, business coach and mentor. This has many rewards in that I see businesses grow and flourish all through business planning and mentoring. I often think back to my BU days which seem only like yesterday. I remember the great lecturers who inspired me in my career, the days on the beach, the Summer Balls, the friends I made and of course the hard work, all made my days at BU so special. BU was such a great place to study and the support was fantastic… happy days… Charmayne Chung BA (Hons) Television Production 2004 Life’s been an exciting ride so far! After graduating I was lucky enough to get a stint as a runner in Molinare, a film and broadcast post production facility in London for a few months before I returned home to Malaysia. I was engaged with another production house upon returning to my home country for a few months before I decided to venture into something new. I’ve joined MNC Wireless Berhad, a leading mobile marketing and digital company in Malaysia as an executive. Over the years I’ve gained tremendous knowledge of the industry and diverse experiences. Work is ever changing and there’s always room to grow. Currently, I am working as a manager for the company’s Content Management and Music department and also as a Label Relations Manager for WOWLOUD which is the first cloudbased music streaming service in the country.
Before 1992 Of course, our history goes back much further than 1992! We also have thousands of alumni from the days of the Dorset Institute of Higher Education and the pre-1976 Bournemouth College Anne Arnold (née Plant) 1979 After graduating in Humanities (Law and French) I studied as an external student of the City University, London and the Inns of Court School of Law and was called to the Bar in 1981. My interest in languages continued and in 1985 I met my future husband whilst learning Greek at night school! I retired from my post as Director of Legal Services for the Dorset Magistrates’ Committee in 1999 when I took up a judicial appointment as the Resident Stipendiary Magistrate for Brighton. Following my appointment as a Recorder on the Western Circuit, I transferred from Brighton to Portsmouth in 2006. I now sit as a District Judge in the Magistrates’ Courts and as a Recorder in both the Crown and County Courts dealing with criminal and family cases and am also a member of the Sentencing Council. I keep in touch with other alumni including Julia Cutler (now Woodward) who is a Senior Crown Prosecutor and Stephen Nicholls who by a remarkable co-incidence now sits in my former court in Brighton! From time to time I also see Mike Dineen, one of my former BU tutors, who is an Immigration Judge. I would love to hear from any other members/tutors of the class of 1976-9! Serena Greenslade 1979 After a brief spell as a trainee accountant I decided to return to my earlier studies and concentrate on one of the most important skills a person can have – communication. I qualified as an elocution teacher in 1994 and have recently started teaching via webcam and Skype. I now teach elocution to pupils all over the world from my home in Wimborne, with pupils in Brazil, New York, Australia, Dubai and Poland. Most of these pupils want to soften their accent so that they can be understood more easily by colleagues; those pupils whose first language is English just want to improve their speaking skills. The most common fault is that they speak too quickly and mumble. Pupils who have English as an additional language usually need help with the vowel sounds, words like ‘road’ and ‘rod’ can easily sound exactly the same. It can get a bit confusing with all the different time zones but luckily I haven’t had to teach in the middle of the night yet! I also teach adults and children locally and enter pupils for New Era Academy of Speech and Drama exams and Victoria College of Music and Drama exams. www.afraid-of-speaking-a-speech.com Judge Gerard Angoh 1978 I am currently a Judge of the Supreme Court of Mauritius. I graduated in 1978 from the Dorset Institute of Higher Education, now BU, with a degree in Law and Economics. My student days were an inspiring experience, including the very friendly feel, the quality of student life and the special interaction that happens in a relatively small community of students. I got admitted at the Council of Legal Education in London and was called to the Bar from the Middle Temple Inn in 1979. Prior to becoming a Judge, I spent a few years in the private practice before joining the State Law Office as a prosecuting counsel. I then worked as a Magistrate. From 2006 to 2008, I was the Director of Public Prosecutions. The quality of education received at DIHE has shaped to a great extent my career path and has contributed in fulfilling my dream of working in the legal field. I am the proud father of three adult children. My eldest daughter is a barrister and lives in London. Working as a judge is very rewarding but at the same time very stressful.
