28 support to ops NEWSREEL New staff commendations ROUND four of the Chief of Defence Materiel (CDM) Commendation scheme has been launched. The closing date for nominations is Friday 23 January. Further guidance can be found in HR information note 49/2008 on the defence intranet. Service medals presented EIGHT staff from the Defence Storage and Distribution Agency (DSDA) have been rewarded for their contribution to a successful drawdown operation in Kosovo. Neil Firth, Chief Executive of DSDA, presented the eight civilian staff with NATO Service Medals for their achievement. The team inspected and conditioned around 240 ISO containers, and with the help of local British forces, the level of serviceable stock and containers to be retained in Kosovo was signifi cantly reduced. Thanks to their work, the MOD is estimated to have saved around £247,000 and is expecting further income from Disposal Services Authority activity. MOD APPRENTICES gathered at Main Building in early December for the annual Apprentice of the Year Awards Ceremony, with this year’s awards being presented by Quentin Davies MP, Minister for Defence Equipment and Support. “There are currently 325 apprentices undergoing training in 19 establishments around the country’, said Vice Admiral Trevor Soar, Chief of Materiel (Fleet). “Today’s winners are evidence of the high standard of training MOD has to offer, and it is a pleasure to welcome them here to recognise their achievements before they embark on an exciting and rewarding career.” “Apprenticeships are an extremely important national asset”, said Quentin Davies, in his address to the assembled apprentices, their families, friends, training staff, senior manages and other guests. “They endow people with skills for the rest of their lives, and I want to thank you all for putting in your time and effort.” The MOD has a considerable commitment invested in apprentice training. Craft and Technician Apprentices follow a training programme which fully meets the Advanced Apprenticeship National Framework requirements, and provides a route into an engineering career with the MOD with an emphasis on vocational training. David has now completed his apprenticeship and is now a gun bay fitter on cannons, refurbishing them for reissue back to the fleet. “It has been a brilliant experience”, said David, “and being Apprentice of the Year is great. I wouldn’t be here now though without the support of my family, friends, fellow apprentices and the training staff. It gives us a future.” Winner of the Sir David Cardwell Memorial Prize, which is sponsored by the family of a former Chief of Defence Procurement and presented to the apprentice who has had to overcome some great or physical difficulty to successfully complete their apprenticeship, was presented by Sir David’s widow Lady Cardwell to Josh Samphier, from DSDA Gosport. “It was great to win it,” said Josh. “It’s made everything I’ve gone through worthwhile. It’s been very much a learning curve, but enjoyable and I’ve learned a lot.
