Naval Base nine celebrate
Masters degree success
The nine graduates mark their achievements with the two course designers, Neil Grant and Alex Duffy
NINE WORKERS from HM Naval
Base Clyde are celebrating after
graduating as Masters of Science
in Operations Management in
Engineering.
The group, consisting of
five MOD and four Babcock
Marine workers, spent the last
two years working towards the
qualification, studying in their
spare time as well as travelling
regularly to classes at Strathclyde
University.
“It was a lot of hard work, but
the sense of achievement at the
end has made it all worthwhile.”
said Graeme Falconer, one of the
graduates who works as Astute
Captains Steve Burchill and Peter
Ashford share the golfi ng challenge cup
Maritime teams take
up golf challenge
GOLFERS FROM the Fleet
Wide Equipment Directorate
have faced up to each other in a
friendly golf competition. Staff
from the Maritime Equipment
Transformation (MET) and
Maritime Equipment Systems
(MES) teams took part in the battle
for the prestigious “Ashford Cup”.
Five groups of four players
played 18 holes, with Alan
Walkington winning the longest
drive competition and Steve
Burchill winning nearest the pin.
The competition ended in a welldeserved
draw.
Project Manager at the base.
“By funding the course the
MOD and Babcock will ensure
they have the best trained
workforce, one that can deliver
the best quality work.”
The course was designed
by Babcock Marine’s Technical
Director, Neil Grant, along with
Alex Duffy, a visiting Professor
at Strathclyde University.
Covering subjects such as
logistics, project management,
risk management and process
improvement, the skills gained
from the training are ideally
suited to the work undertaken at
HM Naval Base Clyde.
THE ROAR of
a 6,000-strong
crowd and the
pride of being
part of a crew.
This was the
experience
of the Abbey
Wood Field
Gun crew who
had responded
to an invitation
from RAF
Cosford to put on a Field Gun
Competition during the 20th
Birmingham Tattoo. Field gun
embraces physical and mental
strength, precision teamwork
and the unswerving desire to
succeed and this was all on
display during the event.
Abbey Wood was asked at
short notice to provide a crew
for the event after Cosford’s
original opponents, the
Military Corrective Training
“This is one of the proudest
days in my career,” said Barrie
Duncan.
“I had to dig deep to hold
down a full-time job and study
too, but I’ve come out the other
end with a Masters degree and
that has broadened my whole
outlook and given me a greater
understanding of the role of
change and best practice here at
the base.”
The successful students were
Morag Cook, Mike Bramall, Jim
Cunningham, Grant Templeton,
Richard Hamilton, Barrie
Duncan, Joanna Slack, Graeme
Falconer and Stewart Millar.
Strength, teamwork and an urge to succeed: the Abbey
Wood Field Gun crew put on a show of military might
Centre, Colchester, had to
pull out. Truly joint, the crew
and support staff contained
representatives from all three
services. Each race was keenly
fought with RAF Cosford
emerging as the victors.
The two-day event also
did much to enhance the
public image of the military,
demonstrating the prime
values of leadership, teamwork
and delivery under pressure.
