4 THE PENNSYLVANIA ODD PELLOW January 2000Dear Brothers and Sisters,NBC-TV Anchorman, Tom Brokaw, in his book, The Greatest Generation, cites the tremendous accomplishments ofthe generation that includes our members of nearly 70 yearsofage and older. Those laudable accomplishments were made in theface ofnear overwhelming adversity, and set the foundation that ledto the world of today. Mr. Brokaw centered his book on America, but the well-earned title of "The Greatest Generation" cannot berestricted only to those people of your age inside the borders of theUnited States. All those calamitous events affecting our lives in thepast were not limited by national boundaries, and neither were theefforts that overcame so many dramatic changes, and so manymonumental problems. We must therefore include our older membersfrom Canada, and many other nations, under this honorabletitle. You have earned it!Your younger Brothers and Sisters would never take away fromthe claim that yours is the Greatest Generation. Many of us are yoursons and daughters, and your grandchildren. We know what yoU!have done! Your accomplishments are in our minds and hearts, andin the book! They are fact, and while we would like to do so, theyare too numerous to list here. We honor you greatly for what youhave given to the world, and to all the generations who will followyou.Much has been asked of you throughout your lives and youaccepted each challenge as they came. Now, and my Brothers andSisters, we must ask of you - one more time - to again step into thebreach and show the mettle that earned you this most honored title. We must ask you to step up to your FINEST HOUR for our greatOrder, and help us move Odd Fellowship into that glorious futurethat you made possible through your past accomplishments. Wemust ask for your whole-hearted support in halting the decline inour membership numbers and in generating growth both in ournumbers and in our practices of the principles of Odd Fellowship. Please note the key words "your whole-hearted support." We arenot necessarily asking you to hit the bricks and find suitablecandidates for membership. However, your continued assistance inasking others ofevery age group to join us is still necessary and fullyappreciated. And, bringing other men and women of "The GreatestGeneration" into our Lodges would also benefit us greatly. They, and their children and grandchildren, as you have, could becomevaluable members of our Order. We are asking you to insist that all members live up to thestandards ofour Order; returning them to that high level you learnedwhen you first became a member. We are asking that you to insist that our younger generation beintensely active in finding and recruiting (asking) high qualitycandidates for membership. We are asking that you take the initiative to teach, to demonstrate, and to lead us in rebuilding the beauty and dignity of degreework to the level that we know you are still capable of performing. We are asking that you, by both precept and example, show ouryounger generations the value of active participation in activitiesand events, not only within the lodge, but also at every level of theOrder - especially the value we can all gain by their activeparticipation in the annual sessions of our Grand Bodies. We are asking that you take the initiative in teaching the youngermembers the laws, rules and regulations of our Order, in showinghow they establish a commonly understood playing field for everyOPEN LETTER TO OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF "THE GREATEST GENERATION" member, and in insisting that they be followed for the good of theOrder. We are asking that you be the burr under the saddle ofouryoungergenerations; be the motivators, teachers, demonstrators, encouragers, cheerleaders, and the Odd Fellowship conscience of youryounger Brothers and Sisters.Yes, we are asking much ofyou. You have been to the well-"beenthere, done that" - many times. We understand that, and weappreciate that. Yet, we are still asking you to please reach deeply, and give us the benefilt of your life's experiences one more time aswe turn toward a growth in membership numbers, and growth in thepractice of the principles of our Order. When, through the success stimulated by your "whole-heartesupport," wecan claim 1 new member in every Unit ofOrder we willbe on our way to a greater future. Never underestimate the Powerof 1. That 1 new member in every Unit can be the 1 who willgenerate greater growth and may well be the 1 to lead us inCARRYING THETORCHOFODD FELLOWSHIP well into themiddle of the next century. My Brothers and Sisters, THE FUTURE IS NOW! LET USBEGIN! Please give us that "whole-hearted support" we so desperatelyneed. It is said, "a different world cannot be built by indifferentpeople." We have all, at every age level, shown indifference to ourdeclining membership for much too long! Show us the lessons thatyou learned from your experiences how commitment can overcomeindifference.Sincerely in FL &T.,Rob Robbins, ChainnanSGL-IARA Membership 2001 CommitteeCHANGE OF ADDRESSNo, Ihaven'tmoved but9ll has given house numbers that wemust use. The scholarship was ofgreat help to my financial needs for books and other expendituresduring the first semester of college. With the rising costs to attendcollege it greatly helps students like myself to make the dream cometrue of attending college. It was very gracious and kind.I have been keeping very busy attending classes at Slippery RockUniversity and working at the university library. Both activitiestake up much of my time and seem to make the days go faster.
