Jocelyn Nixon. Owner of Images Beauty & Body Therapy LtdBeauty – the inside story“To attract attractive people, you must be attractive. Toattract powerful people, you must be powerful. To attractcommitted people, you must be committed. Instead ofgoing to work on them, you go to work on yourself. If youbecome, you can attract.” Jim RohnJocelyn Steenson-Nixon, owner of Images Medispa inPukekohe, has known this for a long time. In fact, her businessis based upon that principle. The way she puts it, it seemsrather obvious: “You attract better opportunities if you lookafter yourself well.” The obvious pay-off of looking afteryourself well is increased self-esteem. “If you look good, youfeel good… our passion is for helping raise self esteem.”Jocelyn first began promoting ‘looking after yourself well’through an at-home clinic. After seven years of study andtime spent running a business from home, she had a desire totake her business to the next level: “I was already a practisingmassage therapist and beautician as well as qualified innaturopathy and herbal medicine. I could see a gap in themarket… a gap that demonstrated that these types of servicesweren’t available in a combined professional situation.”Jocelyn went on to purchase Images in 1986, then knownas Images Studio. It was the first grooming clinic available towomen. At the time, our logo was ‘we help you look and feelyour best’. It has not changed in 22 years. It was a small, soletradingbusiness when we first purchased it. It has now grownto seven staff.”However, despite noticing a demand for better results in skinhealth and appearance enhancement, using IPL (Intense PulsedLight), omnilux, microdermabrasion, peels, electrolysis, facials, manicures and more… it took time and education campaignsto let women know what was cosmetically / medically availablein the area. “It took a long time to educate women to raiseexpectations for themselves.”Jocelyn believes that taking care of yourself impacts, not only onyour own personal self esteem and job prospects, but what youmodel to others. “It sets good habits for young women in takingcare of their own appearance with products that work. If they arenot looking after themselves, or don’t care, they are last on theirown list.”“…It’s about self esteem, you do it first for yourself and itoverflows into your own household, friends, children. The smartfamily is out there putting on sunscreen every morning. Whatoverflows into teaching children is more than cleaning teeth… .“I see one of the main duties that we have is to ensure peopleuse sun protection as their doctor advises. It backs up the medicalfraternity who have to deal with end results. Generally, men whoserved in WWII have a lot of skin cancers. Many worked outsideafter this. It’s been a sobering experience watching this happen. However, it ensures that the next generation is wiser than the lastand backs up the advice of the medical profession. It’s also thebest anti-ageing product to use.”Jocelyn’s passion for spreading health-related messages toFranklin started early on and she considers herself a part ofPukekohe history. “I was born and bred in Pukekohe… Ilike the community approach to lifestyle. Once you live in thecity you appreciate a small community where everyone mixeswith each other. The people I met as we were bringing up ourfamilies, developed the communities and sports clubs and manyare successful business people here today. We were involved inclubs like hockey, cricket, netball, scouts, churches and charityorganisations. Part of our business growth was by being involvedand caring, in the community. It all combines to get the messageout.”The clinic’s many awards over the years have acknowledgedImages Medispa as a major player in the beauty industry. WithJocelyn at the helm and her passion for the community, those inthe area are in good hands.14Support your local business www.elocal.co.nz
