JEWISH AFFAIRS ROSH HASHANAH 2009Iran rallies, these were dismally attended and werecertainly in no way reminiscent of 2001.The comments of Ronald Eissens from the DutchMagenta Foundation are worth sharing:People ask us all the time if this conference islike Durban. No, it’s not. It is absolutelyincomparable. Foremost, there is the question ofsize. Only 314 accredited NGOs are here, with1073 NGO delegates, which is nothing likeDurban, but the atmosphere is also very different. It is mostly a well-behaved affair, with only afew incidents. Stickers and some flyers wereconfiscated by the UN Police. A small numberof side-events were cancelled because of contentnot in line with the DDPA and/or abuse language.A few NGO delegates and one journalist hadtheir accreditation revoked. Kudos to the UNpeople at the Palais de Nations for doing a greatjob, and special kudos to the UN Police andsecurity forces for keeping everybody on thestraight and narrow and handling it all withutmost care and friendliness.International Jewry was far better prepared forthis conference. Preparation had started early lastyear, and it could be clearly seen how more effectivethe responses were. The coalition provided acoordinated front at the DRC. It was wonderful to seeJewish NGO’s putting aside their egos and turfissues to work together for the common good. Ourcaucus office (situated in the World Jewish Congresssuites near the UN) was a constant buzz of activity, and was run in a professional and efficient way.I was able to leave Geneva feeling gratified thatinternational Jewry played a significant role inpreventing a repeat of 2001.Wishing all ourJewish friends aHappy New Yearand well over the fast012 319 8811 • 011 378 3200www.cityproperty.co.zawith complimentsTel: (011) 417 6600 Fax: (011) 622-5561PrestigeTV/VIDEO / HI-FI / FAX MACHINES / FRIDGES* MICROWAVE / CONVENTIONAL OVENS* STOVES * DISHWASHERS * WASHING MACHINES *TUMBLE DRYER * GEYSERS * PUMPS * WIRING *ELECTRICAL JOBS **** SECOND HAND APPLIANCES FOR SALE ***TANGO APPLIANCES53 2nd Road KewTel: (011) 022 4572Cell: 083 498 050033
