THIS IS WHO WE ARE
Creative Retirement Manitoba (CRM) is a not-for-profit education
centre that contributes to the well-being of retirees and their communities
by developing and offering innovative and interactive
learning opportunities. CRM is governed by an elected board of
volunteers and administered by a professional staff.
THIS IS WHAT WE BELIEVE
• People in all of their diversity have the right of access to
education across their life span.
• Lifelong learning promotes well-being intellectually,
emotionally, physically, socially and spiritually.
• The well-being of individuals and the health of communities
are interconnected.
• Retirement presents a creative opportunity for individuals to
enrich their lives and that of their communities.
• People involved in Creative Retirement Mantitoba are active
in governing, shaping and delivering programs.
• Seniors have a very valuable role to play in their communities
by sharing their knowledge and life experience.
THIS IS WHAT WE OFFER
Take a course, go on a tour, join a special-interest club, share your
talents and skills with others, facilitate courses, volunteer... you
decide on the level of participation you’re comfortable with and
CRM will be there to help you make it happen.
30 Years and Counting
It has been a little over four months since the new board
of directors of Creative Retirement Manitoba was elected,
and just three months since I last wrote to you in this
column. 2012 marks CRM’s 30th Anniversary year. We have
a proud heritage to celebrate. It is an important milestone,
and we will be in touch with you in the next months.
The time since July 2011 has not been without its challenges, but every day the laughter, en-
Lynne Axworthy ergy and activity emanating from the classrooms, the coffee room, the lounge and the computer
lab is heartwarming. There is a feeling of optimism and goodwill throughout the building.
I want to begin by thanking those members who attended the Annual Luncheon on October 19, featuring
Larry Updike of CBC Radio One’s Up to Speed, and Margo Goodhand, Editor of the Winnipeg Free Press. We are
indebted to the luncheon committee members: Trish Gibson, Marilyn Lockwood, Anne Jenkins, Winnie
Warkentin and D’Arcy Mansell. They did what CRM volunteers do best – give of their time and their hearts. So
many of you have stopped by to say how much you enjoyed the guests of honour, especially the wit and warmth
of Margo Goodhand. Creative Retirement is especially grateful to our corporate luncheon sponsors who continue
to lead the way to make the luncheon a financial success. To those who donated auction items and sold wine
auction tickets, a very special thank you. Overall the luncheon netted $17,500, a feat we could not have achieved
without everyone’s support and goodwill.
It seems that the board has met every two weeks since the special meeting in July. At that time, we didn’t even
know if CRM would survive the fall term. As with the majority of non-profit organizations, there is a constant
concern about the financial future of our organization. The board is grateful to have received counsel, financial
support and understanding from our major partners: The Seniors and Healthy Living Secretariat of the
Provincial Government, The Winnipeg Foundation, The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, The Winnipeg
School Division #1, and the Manitoba Community Services Council. Our challenge seemed even greater because
the fall term programs were restricted to four days a week. However, there were 1,657 registrations. A
number of classes were sold out, and others were so popular that extra sessions were added. This is a remarkable
feat. We have looked at the rental fees and parking accessibility at our other venues. Because of the parking
difficulty, we will be moving lecture courses from the National Research Council to the Unitarian Church,
on Wellington Crescent and Academy Road. There is ample parking, and an inviting room for lectures.
Another change in the winter program is that the lectures will not be a part of a series to which you must subscribe.
Instead, because some of you may wish to travel, each lecture will be stand alone. You may take one, two
or more and if you take four, you’ll get one free. Now, that is a bargain!
Please save the date of our Open House – Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 10a.m.to 3p.m. You may register
for new courses, meet some of the instructors and the board, give us your ideas, have coffee and chat. We
look forward to seeing you.
From all of us at Creative Retirement Manitoba, we send our best wishes for the holiday season, and for the
New Year. G
We would like to have e-mail addresses for
as many of our members as possible. If
you have e-mail and have not supplied it
to us, would you consider doing so? Please note
that you will still receive The Guide by mail with
details of all the programs. Everyone receives the
printed version, so you will still have a paper
copy to thumb through and enjoy!
Here is the reason why we would appreciate
your e-mail address: The new board, when
elected, promised open communication with our
members. We want to send out newsletters on a
regular basis, and e-mail is the most efficient
way to do it. E-mail is free, and it takes about an
hour of staff time to set up the newsletter and
send it on its way to more than 800 members
who have email.
A mailed newsletter, by contrast, costs $1.25
per item by the time the cost of paper and envelope,
printing, stamp and tax is taken into account
– a total cost of $750. Plus, it keeps two
volunteers busy for four hours each to stuff and
stamp the envelopes to nearly 600 members.
We realize that not all of you have e-mail. We
will certainly continue to mail newsletters to
you, but it would be helpful if those that do have
e-mail and do not mind giving it to us would do
so. Send an e-mail to info@crm.mb.ca.
We promise you will not be inundated with emails,
just the newsletter and a monthly update
to keep you informed of what is going on at
CRM. We will not share your e-mail address with
any other organization.
Also, you will continue to receive The Guide,
detailing all the programs, by regular mail.
Thank you in advance. We hope you continue
to enjoy the programming offered by Creative
“Get Me Rewrite, Sweetheart!”
Winnipeg Free Press editor delights CRM luncheon audience
Margo Goodhand, editor of the Winnipeg
Free Press, and Larry Updike, host of CBC
Radio One’s Up to Speed were the guests
of honour at Creative Retirement Manitoba’s annual
luncheon, October 19, at the CanadInn
Polo Park.
In his opening remarks to more than 300
guests and supporters, master of ceremonies
Larry Updike welcomed the guests with the inspiring
story of his own commitment to lifelong
learning, describing how he went back to university,
while working full time in radio and raising
a family. Returning to the University of Winnipeg,
Larry completed a Bachelor of Theology degree
in 1986 and a Bachelor of Philosophy degree.
Goodhand proved to be a wonderful keynote
speaker with a warm and humourous presence
and an uplifting message. She spoke to the past
and future of the newspaper business and the
necessity of embracing change both as an individual
and as an editor. Goodhand noted that
there have been few changes in her business
since its inception in the mid 1800s, but that the
technological revolution has changed, and will
continue to change, the face of newspapers
worldwide.
Far from sounding the death knell of the
newspaper industry, Goodhand predicts that
modern technology will force her business to expand,
improve and embrace the new ways that
readers seek the news. The Winnipeg Free Press
has already begun to modernize its approach to
delivering the news by expanding its online offerings,
adding video footage to accompany the
traditional text and photos as well as blogging
and tweeting. These latter two methods of communication
are evidence of the intention of the
newspaper to engage its readers in a more interactive
way.
Gone are the days of reader input being relegated
to the Letters to the Editor section of the
paper; readers are now encouraged to express
their opinions in a variety of modern ways. In
fact, the Free Press is hoping to train some of its
readers to provide news through its innovative
Winnipeg Free Press News Café. The café, a
place designed for readers to meet and mingle
with journalists, beat reporters, columnists and
editors, will soon offer free, open-to-the-public
classes on journalism.
Goodhand stressed that this acceptance of
change and useage of new technology and ideas
is as vital to keeping the newspaper young and
relevant as it is to maintaining a youthful vigour
and connection to the modern world in our own
personal lives. G
Canada, a land with open arms and inclusive multicultural policies,
Armondo Perla, Curator at the Canada Museum for Human
Rights will introduce you to the plight of migrant workers in
Canada. Canada has long relied on migrant workers to support
a variety of crucial economic sectors. Yet despite these workers’
centrality to the economy – and Canada’s commitment to
a multicultural, diverse immigrant nation – successive governments
have not welcomed these labourers as members of the
national community. To this day, the majority of migrant workers
have never had the chance to immigrate despite sometimes
decades of work experience in Canada, where they have lived
away from their own families. Such workers have typically been
employed in more dangerous and lower-paid jobs than their settler
counterparts.
Did the Six Nations (Haudenosaunee)
Shape the American Constitution? 2811
10:30 – 12:00 noon
March 6 1 Tuesday
According to some scholarly interpretations, the Six Nations Iroquois
(also known as the Haudenosaunee or the Peoples of the
Longhouse) were an inspiration for the American founding fathers
who created the Constitution for the United States in the
late 1780s. In their view, the Great League of the Iroquois resembles
the American Constitution. For example, both institutions
created checks and balances to ensure that no faction
dominated. University og Winnipeg history professor Mark
Meuwese will present arguments and evidence from scholars on
both sides of the issue, those who believe the Iroquois to have
had such an influence and those who deny this connection.
10:00 – 12:00 noon
January 17 – March 27 6 Tuesdays
Roger and Me From Michael Moore. It is 1989. GM is downsizing. Flint Michigan is being ravaged. 30,000 people lose
Let’s Make Money tracks the hypothetical savings of a typical depositor as they move around the global system, often causing
exploitation as various financial agents try to produce high returns.
Why We Fight describes the rise and maintenance of the United States military industrial complex and its fifty-year involvement
with the wars led by the United States to date. How does this relate to the corporate run economy?
The Inside Job analyses the global financial crisis of 2008, which, at a cost over $20 trillion, caused millions of people to
lose their jobs and homes in the worst recession since the Great Depression and nearly resulted in a global financial collapse.
The Corporation is critical of the modern-day corporation, considering its legal status as a class of person, and evaluating
its behaviour towards society and the world at large as a psychiatrist might evaluate an ordinary person.
Home is almost entirely composed of aerial shots of various places on Earth. It shows the diversity of life on
Basic Introduction to the Enneagram 3668
1:00 – 2:30 p.m.
January 18 – February 1 3 Wednesdays
The Enneagram is an ancient symbol of spiritual transformation.
It is a map of the nine energies, positive and negative
(“Ennea” = Greek for “nine”) that are at work in the universe.
It can be applied to any and all processes. When applied at the
level of human personality, it is usually introduced through a
typology of nine types. At this level, our spiritual work is to
change our “negatives” (compulsions or conditioned energy
patterns) into “positive” (or free) choices in life. We will describe
these patterns and indicate some practical ways to do
this kind of work, leading to inner freedom through self-knowledge
and self-acceptance. This program will be presented by
David Walsh, a spiritual director and seasoned teacher and
trainer of the Enneagram.
