WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK | MENDOCINO/LAKE COUNTIESMendocino County Celebrates Fabulous Funghi <strong>This</strong> FallLocal Bounty Showcased at Restaurants & Events DuringAnnual Mushroom Festival in NovemberMendocino County is home to more than 3,000 types of mushrooms,500 of which are edible. And every fall, beginning in October,when the gentle rains begin to fall, the mushrooms flourish in abundance.It’s the perfect place to sample (and forage for) chanterelles,porcinis, morels and hedgehogs, and even the extremely rare candycap mushroom, with its intense maple-syrup flavor, that grows onlyalong the northern coast of California.The highlight of mushroom season is Mendocino County’s annual10-day <strong>Wine</strong> & Mushroom Festival (this year from Thursday,November 4th through Sunday, November 14th), with everythingfrom mushroom-themed multi-course dinners, wine- and beerpairingworkshops, mushroom exhibits, guided mushroom foragingwalks and much, much more. With over 100 events, it’s the biggestand best <strong>Wine</strong> & Mushroom Festival to date!Ryane Snow, a member of the Mycological Society and a wellknownlocal leader of mushroom identification walks, states, “Wehave so many incredible varieties of mushrooms that grow in MendocinoCounty, and everyone in the community gets involved in showcasingthis great local bounty. And as more people discover the healthbenefits of mushrooms, not to mention the deliciousness, the interestin our festival is growing.”The premier event of the festival is the Frank R. Howard HospitalFoundation’s <strong>Wine</strong> & Mushroom Train on the historic Skunk train,Saturday, November 6th. Trains will be leaving from both the FortBragg (coastal) and Willits (inland) depots and will take passengers ona glorious train ride through ancient redwoods to scenic CampMendocino, nestled against the Noyo River. Guests then enjoy tastingsfrom various award-winning wineries, culinary treats from localMendocino chefs, a mushroom cook-off (which will be judged by apanel of expert judges, as well as by guests themselves). The event willalso offer a dynamic mushroom presentation from world renownedexpert Eric Schramm, a mushroom hike led by horticulturist LarryDesmond and botanist Marisela De Santa Anna, and a presentationabout Mendocino County wines. A silent auction featuring items andget-aways from Mendocino County’s finest will be available for bid.Live music on the train and at Camp Mendocino.
