Eleanor KaneHi I’m Eleanor Kane. I’m a year 12 student at Otaki College, having lived in Otaki forthree years. I enjoy making new friends and mixing with different groups of people. I amparticularly concerned about the right of every young person to be accepted socially andculturally. The best school cultures encourage inclusive behaviour by individuals. For example atmy school we have vertical tutor groups. These are classes of students spreading fromyear seven to year 13 who meet at the beginning of the day for 15 minutes. This is agood opportunity for the students from different year levels to interact. Because of this, when there are school events such as performances, there is no discomfort with mixedage groups. This makes students feel more secure in their environment and become alot more aware of others. When you get to know people of different year levels it is not as important to youwhether they are of the same cultural background or interest group as you, because youare not necessarily ‘hanging round’ with them all the time. With the increased range ofcontacts the pool of potential friends is expanded beyond the year level for students‘on the fringe’. Awareness of others and social confidence in wide groups leads to anacceptance of differences. Difference becomes ‘normal’. Encountering cultural differenceson an everyday basis enables you to value the contribution each makes to the whole. At Otaki College there is a good mix of Maori, Pakeha, Pacific Island, New ZealandChinese and international students, mainly from Asia. As well there is a broad rangeof family culture, reflecting socio-economic and interest differences. Within the studentbody these background distinctions add to the differences in abilities, interests and tastesstudents themselves have or develop. All of this can lead to separatist tendencies. Ourschool has met some of the challenges by trying to achieve greater positive interactionand inclusion. I want to help find new and better ways to do that.12
