Youth Declaration from the National Youth ForumAs Youth of NZ we recognize that weneed to come to our own conclusions,make our own decisions and seek outmore than the just the mainstreamviews on a range of issues.We recommend to the Ministry ofYouth Development that they extendthe work they started on youthstereotyping in Youth Week this year.EducationCurrently our school system teachesin a monocultural, Eurocentric worldview. We need greater exposure to ourmulticultural society to enhance ourcultural diversity and race relations.Sometimes it is necessary to treatcertain people unequally to make itfair. This may include scholarshi<strong>ps</strong>.We believe that there should be anemphasis on youth gaining a broadeducation to equip them with skills notonly for jobs but for society in general.We believe that compulsory te reoin primary schools would lead toa greater understanding of theindigenous people of Aotearoa NZ.Political CorrectnessWe note the importance of the use oflanguage in society.We observe the unease of manysectors in how language is used.We aspire to a fully inclusive society.We affirm the principle of equality ofopportunity for all.We declare we will neither offend norbe offended by language used in thepursuit of freedom of speech.We undertake the responsibility toeducate young and old to respect andsupport diversity for all NZers.19
