The New Zealand diversity fern was designed by Malaysian born NewZealand designer Jean Voon for Race Relations Day 2005.Starting from the base of the fern, the motifs are as follows:1. Traditional kowhaiwhai pattern from a painted panel, Manutukechurch. (1849) Rongowhakaata Tribe.2. Fleur de lys design loosely representing the European population— taken from hinges on St Patrick’s Cathedral, Auckland.3. Samoan pattern from tapa cloth.4. Traditional Chinese character found on the silk cloth. The character“shou” means longevity.5. Indian paisley, used in henna (mendhi) designs to adorn the hands.6. Vietnamese motif from a piece of woven fabric.7. Middle Eastern motif (Iranian).8 Baby fronds (new growth).
