INSIDE THE <strong>EFL</strong>FAREWELL SEASON 2009Today’s division one grand final marks the conclusionof yet another season of magnificent <strong>EFL</strong> football. This day and the <strong>EFL</strong> division one grand final are nowsynonymous as being the biggest single sporting eventin the east of Melbourne. The season commenced with a charity match atRingwood on a fine Sunday late in March. It was alsoan opportunity to commence a season like we neverhave before with the best of the best of our competitiondemonstrating just how we play <strong>EFL</strong> football in a highquality match against the VAFA.Club players and supporters were out in force todemonstrate their support for those so tragicallyaffected by the Black Saturday bushfires. That day raised nearly $50,000 and already much ofthis has been spent in helping to reestablish sportingfacilities in country areas.2009 saw the competition field another increasednumber of junior teams. <strong>EFL</strong> football continues togrow with this year a record 45 affiliated clubs and 420senior and junior teams.Including finals overall 3,362 matches were playedAcross the entire competition we have determined 24premiership teams, including those for the divisionstwo, three and four seniors. Those finals have beenplayed in good spirit and with great courage andcommitment. To the South Croydon, Mooroolbark andthe Chirnside Football Clubs you have been indeedmost worthy and deserving premiers in 2009.Today the Vermont Football Club competes in its fifthgrand final in five years and for the first time, tacklesthe Croydon Football Club for the division onepremiership.Winning this year’s premiership will be a monumentalchallenge. Vermont have a truly remarkable record inthe <strong>EFL</strong> and are pitted against Croydon, a club of morethan 100 years standing. Croydon has rocketed from10th in 2008, to top of the ladder at the end of the 2009season and deserved the minor premiership after agreat year.On field we have witnessed the most competitive firstdivision season in memory. Play has been exciting, hard and in the main, highly disciplined. After thismatch today more spectators will have attended <strong>EFL</strong>senior finals than ever before. It says a lot about the<strong>EFL</strong>, how clubs conduct themselves and how they playthe game.Behind what happens on the field of course are thearmies of volunteers. Led by club presidents, DavidGreen (Croydon) and David Dressing (Vermont) thesetwo clubs thoroughly deserve their shot at rewardingtheir supporters with the premiership flag in 2009.Finals crowds continue to grow and with that the needfor an increased diligence in assuring that thoseattending are provided the best possible experience.<strong>EFL</strong> football finals have an enviable standing in thisregard and to those that attend today, we thank you forhelping to make this such a significant communityevent and one that continues to showcase the best ofwhat <strong>EFL</strong> football is aboutIt is a considerable task for the <strong>EFL</strong> to conduct thefinals series and one that requires significant clubsupport. Councils and host clubs in Bayswater, EastBurwood, Ringwood, Mitcham, Scoresby and FerntreeGully are to be commended for their efforts in helpingto make these such a success.A growing list of commercial partners and state andlocal governments in 2009 have made significantcontributions to enable the <strong>EFL</strong> to develop thecompetition. In 2009 grounds have been upgraded toprovide surfaces more tolerant to drought, pavilionsand social facilities further enhanced. Initiatives suchas the Nine Almost Little Legends clinic, Nine NewsJunior interleague squads, the <strong>EFL</strong> Road SafetyProgram and Commonwealth Bank LightningPremiership were amongst the programs supported thisyear by <strong>EFL</strong> partners.I look forward to a great contest at Bayswater Oval andwill join you in applauding the 2009 premier at the endof the day.Graham Halbish<strong>EFL</strong> ChairmanTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLERTHE OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUESeptember 19th, 2009 Price: $2.00 (inc. With a notable dominancein general play Vermont would have felt they didn’t fullycapitalise on their opportunities as they only convertedfour of their twelve shots into majors. Particularlydisappointing was the Eagles players’ failure to adjusttheir kicks after they saw the ball was clearly movingright with the breeze.Blackburn played with much greater quality andconfidence in the second term to only trail at half time byone goal. Two early majors to Blackburn saw the deficitreduced to 13 points. After Matt Greig booted his secondgoal – returning to the Vermont side from injury for thefirst time since round 18 - the Burners made their moveheading into the time-on period with three majors in asmany minutes to level the scores. With Blackburncarrying all the momentum Greig kicked a crucial goalby beating Takanen in a one on one contest beforeconverting from forty metres out on the boundary line.In the first ten minutes of the third quarter Vermontdeservedly extended their lead to 20 points. The nextseventeen minutes saw both sides largely waste theirchances, as from ten shots only one goal was kicked. This was highlighted by Tosh Elder who had twokickable shots in quick succession smothered. TheEagles went into the last change 26 points ahead as a lateclassy Nathan Henley goal was cancelled out by aquality Kris Barlow major. The match looked set for an exciting climax asBlackburn booted the first three majors of the term totrail by seven points. The Eagles key playersimmediately responded, with goals from Henley andDean Stephen regaining control for Vermont. After a lullin play two further majors for the Eagles eliminated anyhopes that Blackburn held.Blackburn will undoubtedly be left with mixed feelingsas they reflect upon their season. Going a step furtherthan the season prior can certainly be viewed as a sign ofprogression. Ultimately though they will know theymissed a great opportunity against Vermont. With theexception of Barlow they had many key players whofailed to have an impact, with Kristan Height not havingas big of an impact as he had done in the previous monthsince coming back from injury. Matt Greig also won hisbattle Takanen as he conceded four goals on a semi-fitGreig, whom he had kept goalless earlier this season.Vermont will be quietly confident of turning the tableson Croydon today as some of the reasons for their semifinaldefeat look to have been alleviated. The Eaglesforwardline looked far more potent against Blackburnwith Greig being the main target and Ash Froud thesecond option. While Vermont will benefit from thereturn of a star Croydon is set to suffer with the absenceof one, as the quality and hard work of DanielMcConnell will be sorely missed. With the gap betweenthe two sides appearing to be narrowed the result ofgrand final could easily go either way. The only certaintyis the contrasting emotions of jubilation and despair willbe seen when the final siren sounds.INSIDE 50’s Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 TOTALVermont 23 10 19 10 62Blackburn 11 13 12 17 53SOUTH CROYDON FCDiv 2 BJS Club Champions 2009With Paris Harvie stepping down due tofamily and work commitments,South Croydon FC now invites applicationsfor the following position for 2010 tocontinue developing our exciting young list:Senior CoachApplications or enquiries for the roleshould be directed to The Secretary viaemail: sthcroydon@efl.org.au or toSteve Duke on 0403 432 776.6 www.efl.org.au THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 7

The Eagles will cap offan eventful year taking the Division 1 cup and flag home toVermont Recreation Reserve in what should be a closeencounter to the final siren with Vermont getting over the lineby less than 2 goals. Best on Ground: Ash Froud - If this guyfires, he will be very hard to stop and could open the game up.CHRIS VERNUCCIO (Leader): Croydon has beaten everyteam this season and has a 2-1 head-to-head record against theEagles so deserve premiership favouritism. Chirnside Parkshowed last Sunday how beneficial the week off is and theBlues will be refreshed after their break.JUSTIN NELSON (Journal): Croydon will this Saturdaybask in the glory of being a part of the Eastern FootballLeague’s biggest day, with the club’s seniors and reservesmaking it through to the grand final. The Blues have freshenedup after a week’s rest and the destiny of this year’s fairytale isabout to be realised. At one stage my heart said Croydon, nowmy heart and my head say Croydon. I’m tipping the Blues tolive the dream and win this Saturday’s grand final by 15 points.BEN WATERWORTH: A mouthwatering contest! Vermonthave been there and done numerous times and with Matty Greigreturning last week, the eagles are looking mighty fine. However, Croydon have been the best team all year, finishingtop of the ladder and they proved that they can match it withthe very best two weeks ago with a wonderful finals win againstVermont. Even with Daniel McConnell out, I think Croydoncan still get the chocolates and should cap off an amazingseason in style with a massive crowd behind them at BayswaterOval.BEN WARREN SMITH: I like Croydon. They were the bestteam all year and deserve to go in favorite. Never rule out aVermont side in finals time though. Greig and Froud need tokick 10 goals between them to get home. Brad Kelleher best onground, in what will be the match of the year. Blues by 11pts.BRAD HENDERSON: I am loathe to tip against Croydon, they have proven me and others wrong time and again thisseason, and I would like to learn from that lesson and notunderestimate them. However, my golden rule is never backagainst Vermont in a final. Croydon's teamwork and evennessacross the board will allow them to compete gallantly againstthe Eagles, but in the end the potency of Greig, Froud, andMillhouse up forward, with Mullett, Bardon, Henley, and othersconstantly providing ample supply, will wear down the Blues. If Brad Kelleher was entering this game in stellar form, maybe... but with him struggling, Croydon won't kick a winning scorethis time. Vermont by 31 points, with Nathan Henley to winthe best-on-ground medal.SHAUN KELLY: What a game this promises to be. Thefairytale of Croydon's first division one Grand Final since 1965,against the fairytale of Vermont's rise up the ladder after beingspruiked as a relegation candidate earlier in the season. It'sfantastic to see Croydon in the Grand Final, and in emphaticfashion with the minor premiership and Second Semi victory. They've got the cattle to do some major damage today too -Andrew Hughes, Dale Bull and Jimmy Grant driving themidfield engine, Chris Grant and Cam Britt steering the shipfrom down back and Brad Kelleher, David Black and perhaps, for the first time this season, Luke Barker fuelling the enginewith goals. But can the Blues take on the experience of theEagles in their fifth consecutive Grand Final, and with aroadblock that wasn't present in the Second Semi Final in theform of Matt Greig in tandem with Ash Froud up forward?? I'mnormally reticent to tip against Vermont at finals time, andespecially so in Grand Finals, but the Croydon bandwagon isrolling towards something special, and that something is theirfirst ever division one premiership.NAT EDWARDS: Well well, who would have thoughtVermont would be able to come back and compete in yetanother division one Grand Final. Injuries hurt the club earlyon but to their credit, the Eagles kept working their way back upthe ladder. Croydon have had a fantastic year and deserve to berunning out on that final day in September. But for me, I justthink you can't go past finals experience, and that's what theEagles had. Combine that with Greig and Froud up forward andI think Vermont will come home with the silverware this year.WILL TAYLOR: So here we are on the last day of the seasonfor 2009 in the <strong>EFL</strong>, It will be a cracker of a game betweenthese two sides. Croydon has let the rest of the competitionknow that being at the top of the ladder was no gimme.Vermont came from the depth of relegation to be at the GrandFinal which has been a great effort and shows how the Eaglesare still the power house of the competition. I think at the endof the day, it will be Croydon winning the Division 1Premiership with their midfield and the defense line to be toostrong over the tiring Vermont side who have played 3 finalsmatches. Croydon for me and the best on ground will be BradKelleher.ANTHONY STANGUTS: The last time I tipped againstCroydon this year was against Vermont in round 14, but eversince then I have well and truly been on the Blues band wagon. Some from within the Blues camp still believe we mediaanalysts do not know much about the Croydon side, or paythem respect, but I think they have underrated the mediasupport for them this season. It will be a final to remember, with the Blues by 13 points.GRANT CAMPBELL: With Croydon having won 14 out oftheir last 15 matches and Vermont 12 out of their last 14 gamestoday’s match certainly could go either way. I think Croydonwill deservedly end their 46 year drought. I predict Croydonto win by 3 points despite having less scoring shots.THE FINAL SAY:Croydon: 8Vermont: 3THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 11

It’s a ticket that I’ve held almostreligiously in previous years, yet in the oneyear that I let it lapse, it doubles in value. The scramble for tickets has been furiousthis year, especially in recent weeks, and moreso whenthe dream Grand Final of many didn’t come to fruitionlast Saturday. It seems that everyone wants to clamberaboard the Croydon bandwagon leading into thisweekend’s <strong>EFL</strong> Division One Grand Final, in the hopethat they can say “I was onboard the bandwagon whenthe Blues won their first ever division one flag”, writesSHAUN KELLY.It’s not going to come that easy, though. Australians loveto barrack for the underdog, the little bloke, the one whohasn’t been there before. But the Croydon story isn’t theonly fairytale entering today’s Grand Final. I know, itdoesn’t ring true to describe Vermont’s place in a GrandFinal as a fairytale. How can it, when they enter theirfifth consecutive Grand Final, in search of theirnineteenth premiership from twenty-six tries? Thinkback to round five of this season – yep, just eighteenweeks ago – when the world seemed to be rejoicing atthe fact that the almighty Eagles appeared to be on aslippery slope. They had just lost their fourth game of theseason, against Croydon at Croydon, where they also lostin 2008. The initial ladder forecasts after that game sawsomething that no-one had ever seen before and couldeven imagine – Vermont were on the bottom of thedivision one ladder. Whilst those initial forecasts wereslightly inaccurate, as the Eagles staved off bottom spotby 0.12%, those without a purple and gold bent wereshouting from the rooftops about how the almighty hadfallen. History records that Vermont lost only two gamesfrom that point until now, forcing the naysayers toquickly change their tone. All this points to what promises to be a cracking game offootball today. At one end of the ground, you’ll haveBrad Kelleher, the Alltrophies Leading Goalkicker fordivision one in his first year at Croydon. At the otherend, you have Matt Greig, who earlier this season brokethe career goalkicking record at the Vermont FootballClub. Yet, for some reason, I can’t see this game beinga shoot-out. Mother Nature is disagreeing with me – shewants to see Kelleher and Greig go goal for goal, andwill provide a mostly sunny, twenty-four degree platformfor them to play on. But Croydon is the proud owner ofthe tightest backline in division one this season, conceding two hundred fewer points of the course of theseason than any other team. The lock-down work ofBlues skipper and SEN Team of the Year centre half-back Chris Grant, full-back Cam Britt(Greig’s likely minder), Nick Cook andcompany has been one of the main reasonsthat the Blues will take to the Bayswaterstage tomorrow. Vermont rank only fourthin the points-conceded breakdown, and will have to bewary of Kelleher, but in Grant McCarthy, they have theperfect man to marshall the troops defensively.McCarthy will have cast his eye over the SEN Team ofthe Year and not been able to find his name in the lineupfor the first time since its inception, and will come toBayswater with a point to prove. That’s the cosmetic view anyway – dig a little deeper, and you’ll see that Mother Nature might be ontosomething. In David Black, Croydon possess a fantasticsecondary target should Kelleher struggle tomorrow, much in the same way that Ash Froud looms large in theEagle forward line. Throw in the abilities of NickBraybon and Dean Millhouse as tall targets across eachteam’s half-forward lines (and perhaps Croydon’s LukeBarker for his first senior game of season 2009), runninggoalkickers like Croydon’s Jimmy Candler andVermont’s Dean Stephen, and the potency of each side’smidfield, and I’m starting to think that goals may indeedrain at Bayswater. These forward match-ups will be crucial, but goals can’tbe kicked unless the ball in brought into the forward line, and that’s where this one will be won or lost, in myopinion. Both teams’ midfields have been sensationalthis season, and will be closely scrutinized this afternoon. The ruck duels will be critical – Eagles Robbie Ross andJames McLure coming up against Croydon trio TimGreen, Justin Hughes and Nick Braybon -as will themidfield matchups. The mind salivates at the thought ofwatching Croydon’s Andrew Hughes square up againstChandler Medalist Kris Bardon in the centre of theground, of the thought of Jimmy Grant and NathanHenley trying to out-point each other on a wing, of thetoughness of Blue Dale Bull and Eagle Daniel Mendes, and the silky skills of Rohan Frost and Ryan Mullett. As good as both teams have been this season, there’sonly room for one fairytale to emerge this afternoon. Will it be the fairytale of Vermont rising from the ashesto record perhaps their most impressive victory of theyear?? SOUTH BARK THE LOUDESTDivision two did not fail in presenting a cliff hanger endingto the season, but unlike their heartbreaking loss to Knox atEast Burwood two years ago, this time around SouthCroydon were the side smiling as they gave Paris Harviethe perfect farewell from his four years at the kennel. SouthCroydon won their second senior premiership underHarvie’s reign and gained a spot in division one for the firsttime since 1993.In the battle of the two most recent runners up in divisiontwo, South Croydon had booked a rematch against aMulgrave side that had the wood over them, with the Dogsnot being able to gain a victory over their opponents sinceround nine 2007, losing all five home and away and onefinals clash – that was until grand final day.If the quarter time margin was anything to go by, thechances of South Croydon winning the premiership seemedlimited as Mulgrave burst from the blocks kicking six goalsto nil in the first quarter to race to a 42 point quarter timelead. The Lions kicked with a huge breeze to the residentialend of East Burwood reserve in the first quarter, and theirlead should have been greater if not for their eight behindsthey scored for the term, from 14 scoring shots. The Lionswent inside forward 50 an amazing 24 times compared toSth Croydon’s 8, dominating the opening stanza to thegame.Adam Booth opened the run for Mulgrave, followed bygoals to Brad Fowler and Chris Doyle with both playersjustifying their selection back from injury in the grand finalside. With the margin at 22 points 14 minutes into the firstterm, it was quickly extended when Dom Barker marked upforward and converted then Sam Zikman kicked one on therun to have the Lions out to a 35 point lead entering time on.The defense of Sth Croydon was working well underpressure, but when Ben Collins became the sixth individualgoal scorer for Mulgrave, the Lions had roared out to a 42lead at quarter time. The breeze was to prove the difference in the first half offootball as Sth Croydon reversed their form of the first termto come out on top in the second quarter. Within the first tenminutes of the quarter South had kicked four in a row to cutthe deficit down to just 18 points. Michael King was at hisbest slotting through two goals early, along with a monstergoal from Nick Molnar with the breeze, and a conversionfrom Anthony Dessent from a free kick in the goal square. The Doggies fight back was not finished with, as KyleSimkin kicked his first from 50 out, followed by two moregoals to Molar and suddenly 26 minutes into the secondquarter South Croydon were in front by two points. Simkinextended the lead soon after with his second, but a JacobBeard goal on the run just before half time saw the first ofonly two goals for the game to be scored to the BurwoodHwy end of the ground, and the half time margin reduced tothree points in favour of South. With Mulgrave playing aloose man in defense during the second term, Ben Osborneutilised his position as the spare man in defense for South tohelp set up numerous pushes forward for his side during thequarter. The breeze was not as strong in the second half, andMulgrave were only able to record four goals during theterm to regain the lead at three quarter time and take a 27point buffer into the final quarter. Inaccuracy was again aconcern for Mulgrave in the third term, as they managedfour goals eight from their 12 attempts at goal from 17inside 50’s to Sth Croydon’s three and just two behinds. The final quarter started to quickly bring back memories ofthe 2007 grand final as South Croydon kicked the first fourgoals of the quarter to get to within two points just 13minutes into the final quarter. Michael King showed whyhe is the premier small forward in the competition in thefinal term kicking two early goals on the run, with supportfrom Grattan Stephens and co captain Costelloe in his 200thgame. While it was looking all Sth Croydon, Mulgrave didswing momentum their way with a goal to Ben Andonov atthe 17 minute mark, and Mulgrave had a seven point buffer. However turnovers inside forward 50 cost Mulgrave in thefinal term, and with Kearney, Luke Allison, Dion Festiniand Osborne helping repel the Mulgrave attacks, SouthCroydon were able to bring up their 13th goal of the gameat the 21 minute mark to get within two points as LucasDavies pounced upon an attempted rushed behind fromMulgrave to see his team within striking distance.M.King stamped his name over the final quarter, and whenhe kicked his fifth goal of the game – and third for the term– South Croydon had hit the front for only the second timein the match. Amazingly Kings goal was to be the last in thematch, as both sides were unable to find that crucial goal tomake the difference in the dying stages of the game. SouthCroydon peppered the goals in the last few minutes of thegame which saw their lead extended gradually, and when itwent over the dreaded six point drawn game margin, thepressure was back on Mulgrave to score twice to get backwithin a chance of victory. As they had done in the secondterm, South Croydon made the most of the scoring end inthe final quarter, with their key players standing up when itcounted in the final term. Ben Osborne was the worthyrecipient of the Gordon Parker medal for his work indefense, and was well supported by Nick Molnar, EamonCostelloe, Michael King and Chris Dinnell. For Mulgrave itwas two grand final defeats in a row, with their betterperformers Ryan James, Luke Parker and Rhett Wilsmore. While South Croydon now look for a coach to lead theminto division one, Paris Harvie now finishes his stint at thekennel content that his task to give them a chance back indivision one has now been completed.

PANTHERS RECORD FIRST PREMIERSHIPChirnside Park has finally got their hands on their first eversenior premiership, running away with the division four grandfinal in the final quarter to record a 64 point win. Having onlywon two premierships (a VAFA under 19 and <strong>EFL</strong> coltspremiership) since their senior club was formed in 1991, thePanthers were craving their first ever senior premiership aftercoming so close in 2008, defeated by Heathmont by threepoints. Leading by 10 points at three quarter time, Chirnsidekicked eight goals in a row to run away from an injured andwounded Kilsyth outfit in the grand final. For three quarters the division four grand final was a closecontest, with the biggest lead of the day being no more than19 points the way of the Panthers. However in the finalquarter three tough finals matches in a row took its toll onKilsyth, and Chirnside showed why they finished on top ofthe division four ladder with only two defeats for the yearensuring that the result at the end of the final term was beyonddoubt. After Kilsyth got the first score of the grand final on theboard – a behind – it was SEN division four Team of theYear full forward David Mazins who kicked the first of theday for Chirnside eight minutes into the quarter. Their fivepoint lead was soon erased as Kilsyth kicked their first viaa free kick to Jonathon Steer to see the Cougars in front byone point 17 minutes in. Kilsyth soon extended their marginwhen their captain Jason Hutchieson kicked his first of theday to give Kilsyth an eight point lead. It was the time forthe captains to stand up in the early stages of the game, andChirnside leader Matt McNiell kicked the reply soon afterto reduce the margin back to two points, but two free kickslate in the quarter to Troy Dunn saw the Kilsyth leadinggoal scorer kick his first two of the day to give his side a 15point quarter time lead.Chirnside Park – now kicking with the breeze to theMaroondah Hwy end of the ground – opened the secondquarter with the first goal to Daniel Ryan. Kilsyth soon hadthe reply with Dunn kicking his third of the day from anotherfree kick, and the quarter time margin was restored. ChirnsidePark started to get more of the ball out of the middle withMurphy, Ben Beattie and Brad Waters starting to push the ballforward which saw Chirnside Park lead the inside 50’s for thequarter 22-8. Ryan was marking strongly up forward andPettinella started to get the advantage firstly over Steer thenAndrew Herpich when Steer headed to the bench to be tapedup. Luke Adderley started a five goal run for the Pantherssnapping a goal on the run, before Damian Noorman, Beattie,Murphy and Daniel London all added their first of the day tosee Chirnside go from trailing by 15 points five minutes intothe quarter, to leading by 19 points at the 25 minute mark.Chris Baker – who had been good for Kilsyth in the first half– kicked his first goal towards the end of the quarter, and athalf time it was a 13 point margin in favour of Chirnside. The third term was the lowest scoring quarter of the game, with only four goals scored and neither team able to breakthe game open. Kilsyth started to struggle with fit players ontheir bench entering the second half, and made a number ofpositional changes as they tried to utilise the breeze in thethird. Kilsyth got off to the best possible start in the thirdquarter with Paul Cameron marking up forward to reduce themargin to just six points three minutes gone in the term.Inaccuracy however struck both sides with the next goal notscored until the 18 minute mark, when Pettinella marked inthe square to become the ninth individual goal scorer for thePanthers. They soon had their 10th as Sean Gibson kickedone on the run and Chirnside were back out again to theirbiggest lead of 19 points. Kilsyth were finally able toovercome their inaccuracies of the term when Baker kickedhis sides first of quarter 25 minutes in, and while some lateCougars shots for goal were again offline, the margin hadbeen reduced to 10 points at three quarter time.In the final term Chirnside Park opened the flood gates andpiled on six goals within the first 12 minutes of the quarter.Pettinella became the first multiple goal scorer of theafternoon for Chirnside Park when he marked up forwardwith Ryan in the ruck, and had the Panthers out to a 16 pointlead. Waters followed up soon after with a major on the runand the Panthers were off to the best possible start, finishingfull of run. Ryan, Adderley and London all quickly addedtheir second goals of the day, but was not until Potter kickedhis sides 16th goal of the day, that the Panther faithful startedto find real voice as the premiership cup was becoming a nearcertainty. While Chirnside finished full of run, at one stage in the finalterm Kilsyth went one short on the field due to injuries and ayellow card, but Chirnside were not about to sympathize withtheir opponents, they were going in for the kill. Murphycapped off a great game with his second on the run, and whenAdderley kicked his third of the game, Chirnside Park hadachieved their first ever senior premiership, victorious by 64points.Ruckman Aaron Pettinella capped off a great season, wherehe was named not only the ruckman in the SEN team of theyear, but also the Frank Bibby Medalist as best on ground inthe grand final. Other best players for Chirnside were DanielRyan up forward and dropping back in defense, BrendanMurphy for a four quarter performance on the ball, and KyleHarrison and Andrew McIlwain in defense. Best for Kilsythin the grand final were Mem Yusuf and Brad Smith indefense, Chris Baker, Chris Moloney and Brett Frazer in themiddle. So completes a great year for Chirnside Park, finishing theyear as minor premiers, and despite a tough first threequarters, they broke the shackles in the final term to run awaywith the grand final.

BLUES BLOW MONTROSE AWAYThe Waverley Blues are the division two reserves premiersfor season 2009 after a crushing victory over Montrose atEast Burwood Reserve last Saturday as BEN WARRENSMITH reports. Final scores were Waverley Blues 14.11.95defeating Montrose 1.8.14.The Blues started with the 4-5 goal breeze in the first quarterand it didn’t take long for the boys to swing into action. Atthe four minute mark Alex Playsted received a free kickedafter the swirling wind got hold of a Montrose kick in, andfrom 50m hugged up on the boundary set sail to reward thedominance they had displayed in the opening minutes. Asplayers were getting used to the conditions it was playerssuch as Daniel Molloy and Glen Hislop that were beginningto stamp there authority on the game for the Blues. ShaneKitson who presented well all day nailed his sides secondgoal and his first of the day when standing up and markingstrongly in the goal square, following a great piece of directplay end to end.The next 10 minuts of the match will be remembered as themost memorable of the match. Michael Millier, who waslater named best on ground – set the crowd alight with abrilliant four goal blitz, each of which that had a touch ofclass that would not be matched again. Not one of the fourgoals kicked by Millier was within 40m and he really gaveevery player on the ground on the ground a lesson on how touse the wind to your advantage. Playing coach ErwinAnadoli chipped in with a fantastic tackle 20m out directlyin front, and he didn’t let his side down, slotting the resultedfree kick right through the middle. To round off a brilliantquarter for the Blues, John Grifiths got front and centre in thegoal square and crumbed superbly for his teams eighth goal. The Demon’s struggled right from the outset, unable tocompete against a fierce breeze that would continue to wreakhavoc for the remainder of the day.The second quarter was very hard fought, with Montrosekeen to make amends for there slow start, while trying tocombat a Waverly Blues side brimming with confidence. Totheir credit the Demons stopped the run of the Blues, restricting those to only 2 behinds for the term – but couldonly manage 1 major themselves, through spearheadTravis Gordon. Unfortunately for them it would be theonly time for the afternoon they would find the bigsticks. The third quarter loomed as if the game could becomea major blowout, with the Blues once again kickingwith the breeze. They did control much of the quarterwith Dylan Shields and ruckman Gene Saultry gettinga lot of the ball creating many opportunities for therelooming forwards. Millier added goal number 5 to histally, along with Daniel Playsted also getting himself intothe multiples. When big Ross Laxton scooped on a looseball in the goal square and kicked truly, the margin wasnow out to an insurmountable lead going into the final term.Starting the last quarter 11 goals up, you would forgive theBlues if they took the foot off the pedal a little – but not so.The challenge of kicking a goal against breeze – which hadnot been achieved all ay, still beckoned. Alistair Feary wouldbe the man to break the drought, along with Daniel Molloyto give there side the finish they were after and cap off aterrific season. The final margin of 81 points paid kudos toa team, who set a goal – and achieved it with flying colours.Ben Wheat and Daniel McCall battled hard all day for theDemons but were outshone by a Waverly Blues outfit thatshared the workload evenly across the whole team.Well Done.26 www.efl.org.auTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 27

YOUNG HAWKS BRING SUCCESSThe 2009 division two RoadSafe Colts premiershipbelongs to the Rowville Football Club, after they puttogether an awesome performance on the biggest day ofthe season at East Burwood Reserve last Saturday. Aftersuffering a thirty-eight point defeat at the hands ofMontrose in the second semi-final two weeks earlier, theHawks were able to turn the tables when it counted themost, defeating the Demons in the grand final by 42points, as SHAUN KELLY reports.Montrose entered the game as favourites, by virtue oftheir second semi-final victory over the Hawks, but itwas Rowville that started the better in the grand final. With talls Sam Blackburn and Mitchell Garnerdominating in the air and Max McAra and Bert McGawwinning their share of possession, the Hawks quicklykicked the first two goals of the game through McGawand crafty goalsneak Travis Davis to make the most ofthe stiff breeze blowing to the residential end of EastBurwood Reserve. To their credit, though, Montrosefought valiantly in the opening quarter, with Kyle Larsenand Garry Sheppard prominent over the ball, and centurygoalkicker Billy Schilling putting through a late goal tocut Rowville’s lead to five points at the first change.Quarter number two was expected to swing inMontrose’s favour, but Rowville’s big menhad other thoughts. Garner waseverywhere for the Hawks, with hisstrong hands and sure marking ahighlight for Rowville fans, and he wasgiving the Hawks fleet of runningmidfielders a real target to kick to.At the other end of the ground,Hawks skipper StevenGeorgiou was keepingSchilling - who hadkicked twelve goals inthe three occasions thatthese sides had metpreviously - off thescorecard to stretch theHawks lead to twelvepoints by half-time,although the scoreboarddid not reflect thedominance of Rowville inthe second quarter after theHawks took seven of theeight clearances for thequarter and six of the sevenmarks taken inside eitherside’s forward fifty-metre arc.The third quarter, though, waswhere the game was run and won. Whilst Montrose’smidfielders picked up their work-rate, winning theclearance count for the quarter, it was the run-and-carryfootball that Rowville coach Robert Johns installed inhis team that paid dividends in the “premiershipquarter”, with Rowville extending their lead out to amatch-winning thirty-four point break by the time thethree-quarter time siren had sounded. As much as thefirst half of the game was about the Rowville big men,the third quarter was when their running players madetheir mark on the contest. With McAra, McGaw,Matthew Davey, Michael Horton and CallumRutherford running rampant across East BurwoodReserve, the Hawks kicked four goals for the quarter –two to Davey, and two to Travis Davis – with the aid ofthe breeze, and whilst Montrose would have theirchance to harness the strong East Burwood breeze inthe final term, the confidence of the Hawks wasknocking down doors, and they could sense thatsomething special was on offer. One sensed that with the firepower present in theMontrose forward line, that if they got off to a strongstart they could force their way back into the contest, but when Garner booted his second goal of the daybefore the third minute of the final quarter had elapsed,a sense of inevitability fell over the game, and whenDavis booted his fourth goal minutes later, thebrown and gold ribbons were being fitted tothe premiership cup and the celebrationswere beginning. Montrose answered witha pair of goals through Sheppard andSchilling (his third) to bring somerespectability back to the scoreboard, butwhen Georgiou kicked a fitting goal in thetime-on period and Sam Szylvester kicked afantastic running goal in the shadows of thesiren, the celebrations started and the finalsiren greeted the Rowville faithful with aforty-two point scoreboard advantage.Whilst Montrose may have taken the mantleas the best team throughout the home-andawayseason, they were out-classed and outplayedby a more desperate Rowville sidein the most crucial game of the season. The Hawks brought their “A” game to thegrand final stage, and as a result addedanother piece of silverware to thebulging trophy cabinet at Seebeck Oval, and ensured that the Rowville FootballClub will remain one of the strongest, and deepest, clubs in the EasternFootball League for years to come.28 www.efl.org.auTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 29

The big bloke took five marks insidehis attacking fifty and converted all of them into goals. Allof his five goals came when the game was in the balance aswell. He had classy and skilful service from the Forest Hillmidfield, which included best-on-ground Robert Di Naccio,Ash Jones and Tim Yates. All of these players made aserious impact on the match with their run, carry anddelivery of the football. Mark Smith did a great job inshutting down danger man Ryan Gromadovski and allowedhis other midfielders to give the Zebras forward line everyopportunity to score. With a number of players who had been brought into theside who had played at senior level throughout year,Chirnside Park was unable to capitalise on the scoreboardwhen it counted for the most. Unlike Forest Hill, theylacked a tall forward target insidetheir attacking 50 and it was atoo greater task for thesmaller forward line. The first quarter was tightlycontested with both sidesfinding goals hard to come by.Forest Hill’s midfieldlooked the goods early,winningtheclearances13-3, butthey wereonly ableto kick 2.2 to1.2 in thequarter. Yatesand Jones in thecentre were able toget on top ofChirnside Park’smidfield and drovethe ball inside 50,constantly puttingthe Panthersdefense under enormous pressure. However, Warburton wasunsighted during the quarter and both sides failed toimplement scoreboard pressure. It was much the same in the second term, with only onegoal being scored for the entire quarter, that going to ForestHill’s Brendan Streader early on. However, it wasChirnside Park who had plenty of opportunities to scorefrom good forward thrusts, especially late in the quarter. They took three marks inside 50, but unfortunately didn’treward any of the good work done by the midfield as theyfailed to convert any chances into goals. All of those threemarks inside 50 were taken in difficult positions though, and credit has to go to the disciplined back six of ForestHill. Rohnan Laws and Jeremy Millar were awesomethroughout the entire game and in the second quarter, thewhole defense forced Chirnside Park to lead wide andfurther up the ground, which therefore caused the Panthersto take more difficult shots, and inturn saw them down by12 points at the break.Even though Forest Hill started with a bang, Chirnside Parkworked their way back into the contest in the third quarter.Chris Capuano and the Gromadovski boys started to gettheir hands on the ball and gave Evan Westmore and therest of the Panthers forward line ample chances. However,if it wasn’t for inaccurate kicking for goal, it could havebeen Chirnside Park going into the final quarter with ahandy lead. Forest Hill, through three goals fromWarburton, kicked 5.4 to 3.4 in the term, and with the sameamount of scoring shots, it was a case of what could’vebeen for the Panthers. Chirnside Park was lifted by anexhilarating but rare torpedo goal from the centre squareby Jason Ince at the 27 minute mark. It brought the marginback to 22 points at the final break and gave Chirnside Parksome momentum going into the final term.Once again, the panthers squandered shots at goal and ruedmissed opportunities early in the final quarter. With thezebras restricted to only 2.0, both from the boot ofWarburton, Chirnside Park were unable to capitalise on thescoreboard themselves. With the two Gromadovski boyslooking dangerous playing out of the goal square, ChirnsidePark only managed to kick 3.3, with most of those goalscoming too late in the game. Even when the pantherschallenged late, the solid Forest Hill defence stood tall andfirm in the closing minutes, as the zebras hung on for anunforgettable victory. There were scenes of jubilation after the match as captainWayne Singleton and coach Brad Tuite lifted thepremiership high into the air. And even though their seniorside failed to make it to the finals, the Zebras can bereassured that there will plenty of players from thepremiership reserves side that will be knocking on the doornext season for senior selection.THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 31

FTG faced tough opposition in the first halffrom Forest Hill, but it was the their key forwardMichael Topp that was the difference in the second halfas he kicked five of his sides 12 second half goals tohelp lead them to a 87 point victory.Early signs in this grand final match was the undefeatedFTG Eagles were keen for redemption after two grandfinal defeats in a row, with the adage ‘third time lucky’hopefully going to ring true for their fans. They startedstrongly kicking the first two goals of the game withinthe first two minutes and had raced out to a 12 pointlead. The star of the second half Michael Topp openedthe account for the day for FTG as he marked well 30seconds into the first term, and converted, then TimPeterson bounced one through to record the Eaglessecond. The pace was quick early, with both midfieldsshowing plenty of dash and run, and soon enoughKalem Post soon registered the first major for ForestHill going soccer style in the goal square to reduce themargin to six points. While Post was the main tall optionup forward for Forest Hill, FTG had a wealth oftall options in their forward line, and whileTopp had opened the account, it was timefor Chris Thompson to shine early in thegame as well, as he took two strongmarks up forward and converted topush the Eagles out to theirbiggest lead of the game – 18points.With five goals scored in thefirst six minutes of thegame, a high scoring affairlooked certain, but bothteams started to bettershut down each othersforward movements, andthe game went defensivein the middle stages ofthe term. Forest Hill werethe next side to score asBrad Kilbane dribbled onethrough 15 minutes intothe quarter, and soon afterthe accurate start to thegame by both sidescontinued as MitchellDurdin kicked a goalon the run to push theEagles back to an 18 point lead at quarter time.Amazingly seven straight goals has been kicked in thefirst term, with both teams seemingly adapting to theconditions well early in the game. That was until the second term, when the accuracy ofthe first term was dropped on its head, and neither teamcould find the goals at all. Forest Hill kicked with the aidof a slight breeze in the second quarter, but sufferedfrom inaccuracy early cutting the margin to 16 pointswith early behinds. Down the other end FTG Eaglesstarted to dominate possession but it was not reflectedon the scoreboard as ten minutes into the quarter theEagles had kicked six behinds in a row to move out to a22 point lead. After another missed attempt, Forest Hillfinally made use of the breeze to register the only goalof the term, as 16 minutes in Dylan kicked a rovers goalto see the margin at 16 points at half time in favour ofthe ladder leading Eagles. In the first half the work ofCorey Mack in the middle was really helping the Eagles, along with Jayden Bradbury and Sean Dove. DanielCooper was giving Forest Hill plenty of use of thefootball, along with Dean McCracken and DylanCincotta.Unfortunately for Forest Hill their goal just before halftime was to be their last goal until the 23 minute markof the final quarter, as the Eagles came out firing afterthe half time break to go on an eleven goal unansweredrun as they quickly turned their 16 point half timelead into a 88 point lead 20 minutes into the finalquarter. Wanting to sheer away from a tight finishto the grand final as it had been in previous years,FTG saw Michael Topp come alive in the thirdterm, leading and marking strongly for threemajor for the term. Topp was given plenty ofsupport by Jeremy Stapleton, Durdin andWilliam Parnell who all added goals for thethird term to see them lead at the finalchange by 55 points. The run ofgoals did not end there withBlair Smith opening the finalterm with his first major asFTG were on their way to theirfirst ever colts premiership. Toppkicked his fifth of the morning, andthis was soon followed by goals to CoreyMack, Stapleton and when Topp kicked hissixth, the margin had blown out to 88points. McCracken finally added anothermajor for Forest Hill late in the quarter, but this was quickly answered byanother Mack goal, to see the Eaglesvictorious by 87 points.32 www.efl.org.auTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 33

LEADING GOAL KICKERSWell done to all of this years leading goal kickers in each division. In division one, Croydon’s Brad Kelleher deniedVermont’s Matt Greig his fourth goal kicking title in a row, as the Blues spearhead impressed in his first season atCroydon Oval, kicking over 50 goals in his first nine games of the season. Cody Morris made in impact in his firstseason back at Rowville in division two, bringing up the 100 in the final round of the season, averaging five goalsa game for the Hawks. Division three saw Kire Talevski blitz the competition on his way to 100 goals, as their newrecruit averaged six goals a game up forward for the Mustangs. In division four, Matt Carnelley held off a fastfinishing David Mazins to win back to back titles up in the Hawks forward line this season.34 www.efl.org.auKelleher (Photo: The Journal)KIRE TALEVSKI -MOOROOLBARK1 Nunawading 42 Mitcham 53 Coldstream 74 Warrandyte 85 Boronia 106 Upper FTG 87 North Ringwood 128 Whitehorse P’rs 79 Heathmont 710 Nunawading 311 Mitcham 1012 Coldstream 113 Warrandyte 414 Boronia 315 Upper FTG 716 North Ringwood 1017 Whitehorse P’rs 318 Heathmont 3109BRAD KELLEHER -CROYDON1 Scoresby 42 Lilydale 23 East Ringwood 84 Blackburn 65 Vermont 86 Wantirna South 67 Noble Park 98 East Burwood 59 Norwood 310 Lilydale 411 Blackburn 412 Knox 513 Vermont -15 East Burwood 116 East Ringwood 517 Balwyn 318 Norwood 174TalevskiMorrisMATT CARNELLEY –GLEN W HAWKS2 Templestowe 73 The Basin 34 Forest Hill 55 Chirnside Park 36 Canterbury 47 Eastern Lions 88 Surrey Park 79 Kilsyth 410 Ferntree Gully 612 South Belgrave 913 Templestowe 214 The Basin 315 Forest Hill 316 Chirnside Park -17 Canterbury 718 Eastern Lions 577CODY MORRIS -ROWVILLE1 Montrose 82 Ringwood 33 Doncaster East 34 Donvale 45 Mulgrave 56 Waverley Blues 67 South Croydon 88 Bayswater 29 Doncaster 510 Montrose 1011 Ringwood 812 Doncaster East 413 Donvale 314 Mulgrave 315 Waverley Blues 916 South Croydon 217 Bayswater 418 Doncaster 13100CarnelleyTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 35

IS 10 GOALS TOO MUCHTO ASK FOR?“He lines up for goal number ten, we have been waiting forthis moment all year on our media coverage, and now it isgoing to become a reality. He walks in … a deliberateapproach and it sails thru the middle – the first player tobring up 10 goals in a game this season during our mediacoverage.”This is the line I have been desperate to utter during one ofour radio games this season, but after coming oh so close onnumerous occasions, I have still been left disappointed.Yeah, some commentators would like to see a close game,or a big mark or some great tackling or kicking, but I amwaiting to see 10 goals in a game.Week three of the <strong>EFL</strong> finals was the closest I have got tospeaking those elusive words – HE HAS KICKED 10. Butit was a case of so close, yet so far on not just one occasion, but twice in the one weekend. Kire Talevski - despite hisbest on ground performance - was not able to produce thegoods for me after teasing me all afternoon long. Youwould think I was a red hot chance to see the big doublefigures kicked when Talevski sparked the division threegrand final with six goals up until the six minute mark ofthe second quarter of the big match. Sure the laws ofaverages would mean six in less than two quarters couldproduce another four goals in two and a half quarters? No.I could try and claim that he kicked 10, but I wouldcertainly be clutching at straws. Nine goals six behinds forthe day does equate to 60 points which equals to 10 goalsyou would think, but it does not work out when the club issubmitting their goals scorers for the afternoon and it readTalevski - 9.The next day I was out at the veterans grand final atQuambee Reserve, and it was the last place I thought Iwould see 10 goals scored for an afternoon. Enter StuartWynd. Having farewelled playing senior football this year,Wynd thought he would warm up for a return to seniorfootball in 2010 with a year in the Knox vets side. Videoingthe game for DVD, nine points separated Knox and ForestHill at half time, and despite being the leading goal scorerat half time with three goals, there were no signs of whatwas going to occur in the second half. Four third term goalsto Wynd saw me trying to control my excitement of seeing10 goals in a game for the first time during the year. Couldit be the unlikely veterans game that held the key to 10goals for me? Wynd liked Quambee reserve having kickedbag fulls of 10 there before, could he do it one more timefor the man talking him up on the DVD coverage? As muchas big Stu tried during the final quarter, two more goals wasall he could produce, and through gritted teeth I announcedhim as the Tony Larkin Medalist, when I wanted to call outBen Aldenhoven or Rod Marget just to spite Wyndy for notgiving my 10 goals I so richly deserved. The scenes at Jubliee Park and Quambee Reserve broughtback memories (or nightmares?) of a blistering first halffrom Noble Park utility Stewart Kemperman in round 9against Balwyn. Stewart Kemperman was unstoppable inthe first half kicking six goals six minutes into the secondquarter – but injury was going to hamper his attempts at thedouble figures. Credit must go to Allan Murray though whotried his best to slot through 10 for me, but he was left oneight goals for the game at the end of the day, after kickingthree goals in the first and third terms, but only one goal inthe second and fourth quarters.Memories of round four also flooded back of anothermissed attempt at 10 goals, with Forest Hill hosting theGlen Waverley Hawks. The first half gave me goose bumpsat the chance of seeing two plays slot through 10 goals eachwith Matt Wynne and Matt Carnelley both putting on aclinic to have four goals each to half time. No one saw thedark horse in the race giving me my first opportunity towitness 10 goals for the season with Aaron Jones boltingfrom no where to kick five third quarter goals to take histally for the day to six. Four goals in the final term – wouldhe be a chance? He had certainly surpassed Carnelley andWynne in favourtism to kick 10 with both Hawks goalkickers only adding one goal each in the third term to halffive each. Another three goals for the game to Jones left meso agonizingly close, but get so agonizingly far for the 10goals, as Jones finished the day with nine goals for thematch. This was to be the bench mark for our media coverage forthe year, with Murray’s eight round nine goals and TroyDunn’s eight round 14 goals and ‘The Kid’ Talevski’s sevengoals in round 15 goals being the closest for the season untilthe double disappointed of Talevski and Wynd in the finals.Maybe someone on division one grand final day can grantmy wish of 10 goals? Surely Matt Greig, Ash Froud, BradKelleher, David Black or even maybe a late inclusion ofLuke Barker could see the dream come alive on the biggeststage of the year. To you forwards out there, the best onground medal is yours for the taking – just give me my 10goals I want – it is as simple as that.Footnote: just for the record, 10 or more goals have onlybeen kicked 12 times this year, with Kire Talevski leadingthe way kicking double figures four times, Cody Morristwice, along with Rob Davies, Darren Dewar, Jay Sherlock,Mick Aitken, Nick McConnell and Daniel Breese all theonce. From 376 senior games for the season, and myselfonly attending not too many more than 20 games, the oddsseem to be against me.Anthony StangutsTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 37

In grand finalweek the two got together to chat about their thoughts on season 2009 in the Eastern Football League.Ben Warren Smith (BWS): Well Ben - what a year! It’sall happened so quickly. Besides obviously joining themedia team, what has to be your highlight of the year?Ben Waterworth (BW): Well Benny would have to sayseeing 3 bags of 9 goals. 1 lot to Stuey Wynd in the vetsgrand final, another bag to Cody Morris, and the cream ofthe crop – Kire Talevski in the DIV3 Grand final wasawesome. But unfortunately no double figures. You?BWS: I‘d have to say the doggies getting up last week inthe DIV2 final. Awesome game, and always anentertaining club to watch.BW: Yeah agree with you there Benny.BWS: What about your player of the year?BW: Ooh, I’d have to say Talevski. He kicked 124 goals inDIV3 coming from Vermont and helped lift his team into2nd division next year.BW: What about yourself?BWS: Could not agree anymore with Talevski, spot on.Your most exciting team to watch for the year?BW: Rowville in DIV2. I felt they had a really goodbalance across the board but unfortunately fell at the 2ndlast hurdle to the eventual premiers. Yours?BWS: Really tough one this, but I’d have to sayBlackburn and Chirnside Park in a tie. Both playattacking football, and every game I watched of eachteam, I always left impressed.BW: We’ll go the other end now, who was your mostdisappointing team of the year?BWS: Geez, I’m going with East Doncaster. Great club, promised a lot with a new coach and a well balancedlist. But from mid season, it couldn’t end quick enoughfor the boys from Zerbes. Players leaving mid season aswell as coach Brad Hall at the year’s end, means freshbeginning’s for another tilt in 2010. How about yours?BW: Balwyn. Yeah, I think there a bit too old. Have severalplayers over 30 and I believe they will be very disappointedthat they didn’t atleast make the Grand Final and a chanceto go back to back.BWS: Division 1 Best And Fairest?BW: Can’t go past Mullet from Vermont. What can you say- absolute gun and could very well have another cup in hishands come 5pm later today.BWS: I’d like to see a forward win it. Brad Kelleher 70odd goals in the best performing team, is bound to showup in voting, so I’ll take him. What about today mate?Who is going to take it out?BW: Croydon. Best side all year, solid forward line and thebacks are strong enough to hold Vermont’s guns at bay.Croydon’s time is now, and I think Vermont have run thererace. Yours Benny?BWS: Totally agree Ben. I think Greig ad Froud willneed to snag 10 between them for Vermont to be right inthe game. But never write off Vermont. Croydon deserveto be favourites, they have been the best team of theyear, so I’m going Croydon by 11pts in an absolutecracker.BW: I love it. Who is your Coach of the year?BWS: Bernie Ryan. Almost a perfect season withMooroolbark, never wavered off the ultimate goal allyear and deserved his reward. He always has time forus guys also!BW: Very true. I’ll say Greg Fremantle. Had his own nearperfect season and lifted Croydon into contention for the1st time in a very long time. Top work.Well Benny before we sign off till next year, have to ask –Who was the easiest person to give stick to in Media Teamthis year?BWS: Well that’s easy cos there is only one person thatgives stick to everyone else, and that’s Uncle Fester –Darren Searle (both burst out laughing remember theirboundary banter with Searle during the year)BW: Classic. Yes, well - do you think he will be with usnext year?BWS: Don’t know, hope so. Radio Eastern needs thehusky voice of football special comments telling the fanshow it is.BW: Here, here!BWS: Well that’s it, have a good summer mate, lookforward to more Banter next year.BW: Cheers mate lets hope it’s a great game today. Oh andGo Cats!BWS: Go Saints – Give us a challenge!THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 39

The <strong>EFL</strong> media team havebeen putting their thinking caps on to see if they can predict who will win the best and fairest awards in each ofthe divisions. Who will be announced winners this season? A full listing of best and fairest winners and votes willbe on the <strong>EFL</strong> website www.efl.org.au Saturday October 10.BEST AND FAIREST MEDIA TIPS42 www.efl.org.auNOBLE PARK FOOTBALL CLUB INCApplications are invited for theSenior coaching position in Season 2010.(Playing or non playing)Mail confidential applications with details ofprevious experience and football history to:The President. P.O. Box 855 Noble Park 3174or Email to kfwright@bigpond.net.auClosing date is Friday 25th September 2009.DYSON BAKER: Division 1: Kyle Martin, only a young kidin the Noble Park line up but did alot of fantastic things duringthe season, already a club best and fairest, will poll wellconsistently. Having said that never discount Ash Froud as adark horse, a forward who is prepared to work hard and applysome serious forward pressure.Division 2: Nick Molnar, was a game breaker in a few gamesfor the division 2 premiers, his side winning games won’thamper his possibilities of winning, the only thing that mightare a few votes being polled by his premiership teammates.Division 3: This will be the closest of all four divisions, I wouldthink that you can’t go past Luke Jones, his skill through themiddle of the ground is second to none in the division, buthaving said that he will have a handful of players nipping at hisheels to the end, teammate Matt Polkinghorne, Heathmont backman Steve Buckle and Warrandyte mid-fielder Vinnie Jonesand Whitehorse leadership duo Jamie Carpenter and PaulFiorenza.Division 4: Darran Dewer, I’ve been happy with this guysperformance right throughout the year, much like Kyle Martinfrom Noble Park still quite young but very much a future leaderof the Glen Waverley Hawks.BEN WATERWORTH: Division 1: Ryan Mullett (Vermont)- Classy, skilful and a wonderful leader. Another consistentyear. Only worry is other players may take votes off him.Division 2: Ramy Melhem (Mulgrave) - Star midfielder whohas the ability to kick goals and create headaches for oppositioncoaches.Division 3: Kire Talevski (Mooroolbark) - Normally it's amidfielders award, but surely a forward who's kicked 124 goalsin 20 matches has got to go close to winning.Division 4: Shannon Davis (The Basin) - The big ruckman hashad an outstanding year in the ruck and has been consistent forhis side.BRAD HENDERSON: Division 1: Lilydale's CameronLinford is in with a huge chance here, winning heaps ofpossession on a consistent basis this year and standing outamongst his teammates as a definite match-winner. Don't besurprised if Knox young gun Alex Fiore polls a big swag ofvotes either, while Ryan Mullett's second half of the season forVermont will bring him right into contention again.Division 2: Two-time Chandler Medallist Bernie Dinneen tookhis proven ball-finding and vote-catching ability to seconddivision and the Bayswater Football Club this season, and didwhat he does best - seek out and find the footy, distribute it withdamaging results, and play a big role in leading his team tomany victories. He'll take out the award, with Rowville's goalkickingmachine Cody Morris second, and Dinneen'sBayswater team-mate Joel Galvin third.Division 3: Mooroolbark ball-magnet Matt Polkinghorne hasbeen the bridesmaid in recent seasons in the best-and-fairest,this year he maintained his previously high output underincreasingly greater scrutiny than before. This year may be histime. To win it though, he'll need to hold off WhitehorsePioneers captain Paul Fiorenza, while count on two-timewinner Dean Grice of Boronia again being near the top of thevoting.Division 4: Difficult count to predict this one, but I think TheBasin will quinella the voting, with gun signing Pat Garrity andimposing ruckman Shannon Davis to finish one-two. Theirbiggest challenge should come from Chirnside Park's masterextractor Brendan Murphy.BEN WARREN SMITH: Division 1: Ryan Mullett –Vermont: The captain led from the front when the chips weredown and has been a driving force in the Eagles revival.Division 2: Michael King - Sth Croydon: Maybe the mostexciting player to watch in the whole league. Flair will catchumpires eye.Division 3: Kire Talevski - Mooroolbark: 124 goals,Powerhouse – need I say more.continued page 45THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 43

Or will Kris Bardon or Nathan Henley simply add totheir ever-growing medal collection?? It might be different thisyear, with several eye-catching performances and players.Andrew Hughes from Croydon is in with a shot, as is MarcusHottes from Lilydale, Joel Smith and Craig Decorsey fromBalwyn and Troy Takanen from BlackburnDivision 2: For mine, this is a race in three. 2008 winner MattRobinson from Rowville will be up there again, a fantasticplayer who definitely catches the eye of the umpires.Mulgrave's Ramy Melhem has been sensational in his first yearat the Den this season, and will garner votes. But the one towatch is Bayswater coach Bernie Dinneen, who is a provenvote-getter from the umpires, has had a great season in his firstdivision two season and is poised to become an <strong>EFL</strong> Legendshould he take home the Perc James MedalDivision 3: Will it be the Price and Grice show again, or willsomeone else emerge from the pack?? Both (Matt) Price and(Dean) Grice have had great seasons for Coldstream andBoronia respectively, however both clubs failed to play finals. In looking for a winner, I'm more inclined to head down thegreen-and-gold path towards either the eye-catching centurygoalkicker Kire Talevski, or perhaps this is the year whereproven vote-getter, but perennial bridesmaid, MattPolkinghorne finally salutes the judges.<strong>EFL</strong>Young GunAwardThis year the Leader Young Gun award will onceagain recognise two of the best under 21 playersfrom season 2009. Throughout the year, twounder 21 players were nominated each week, (1from division one & two and 1 from divisionthree & four) from nominations from clubs.Nominations were based on the criteria of:Players to be under 21 years of age as at roundone of their respective division and the playerwas to be playing in the senior team at time ofnomination. The list below is this years nominations, with thewinners to be announced at Chandler Medal nighton Friday October 9.Division 4: Has the change of jumper thrown out the IanAtkinson radar?? Winner of the last three Division Fourmedals, Atkinson moved from Forest Hill to the GlenWaverley Hawks pre-season, and it will be interesting tosee if the love of the umpires followed. Or did theygravitate to another <strong>EFL</strong> Legend in Nick Cox, who joinedSouth Belgrave this year?? I like the chances of BrendanMurphy from Chirnside Park and Pat Garrity from TheBasin, with Kilsyth's Paul Cameron as a smoky.TOM MILES: Division 2: A lot of talent shownthroughout division 2 this season, but I believe BernieDinneen was simply a class above the rest. Had a strongseason, managing to juggle the task of being a playingcoach. I think he will be able to add the 'Kenneth Wright,M.B.E.' medal to his already vast collection of league bestand fairest medals. A player who required a regular tagfrom oppositions, and still managed to produce absolutemagic at crucial game breaking moments. Despite thedisappointment of not winning a flag, Bernie can walkaway from this season with his head held high. A job welldone.Division 3: It's very hard to look past Kire Talevski.Kicking 124 goals for the season he was instrumental inthe success obtained by Mooroolbark this season. Theimpact he had on Mooroolbark was only highlighted in theGrand Final when he put through 9 out of Mooroolbark’s14 majors for the game. I think it’s safe to say he will takethe trifecta, adding the 2009 'Paul Edie' medal to his 'LesLeete' medal and 'leading goal kicker' award.DIV 1 & 2 DIV 3 & 4Leigh Williams - NorwoodMatt Flemming - Forest HillRob Petracca - Blackburn Chris Michaledies - Upper FTGZiggie Alwan - Noble Park Jason McConnell - Nth RingwoodAlex Frawley - RowvilleDarren Dewar - Glen W HawksSteve Newman - Bayswater Tom Hallinan - Sth BelgraveAndrew Preston - Lilydale Daniel Dimitriou - MooroolbarkKevin Hoogkamer - Wantirna Sth Scott Moran - TemplestoweRobert Hartfield - Wav BluesTrevor Mills - The BasinKyle Martin - Noble ParkJarrod Witnish - MitchamBrendan Coutet - Doncaster East Marco Mollica - BoroniaAdam Parker - Scoresby Anthony Sharp - Nth RingwoodRyan Toohey - BlackburnTaylor Buckley - FTG EaglesMatt Wilkins - CroydonAaron Potter - Chirnside ParkRamy Melhem - MulgraveRoss Ansaldi - WarrandyteBrenton Schaeche - Doncaster Calum Willis - Upper FTGAlex Fiore - KnoxMax Kruger - The BasinBilly Schilling - MontroseRhys Dyker - Glen W HawksNathan English - Surrey Park44 www.efl.org.auTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2009 45
