BOUNDARY BANTERBen Warren-Smith: Beware the sleeping giant, BWS.Ben Waterworth: Who? Frosty? The man never sleeps. He’s always talking to people on the phone.BWS: Not Frosty you dill. An even bigger giant.BW: Must be large.BWS: Well when you’ve got 19 Division 1 premiership cupsin your trophy cabinet, you’re in the right to label yourselvesa giant.BW: Ah! The Vermont Football Club? The giants of theEFL?BWS: Well the Eagles have towered over many sides overmany years, not so much over the past two years, but maybethey are back to their intimidating best in 2012.BW: They made Scoresby look second-rate last weekend. Acomplete form reversal compared to the <strong>Round</strong> 15 clash wesaw.BWS: Even more impressive, did it with no Ryan Mullett orHeath Black.BW: No Mullett, no Black, no worries.BWS: Rowville had no worries with Mooroolbark last weekend.BW: Going to put my hand up and say I jumped off theHawks’ bandwagon too quickly.BWS: Don’t jump back on too quickly.BW: It’s hard not to after such an impressive performance.Outplayed the Mustangs from the opening bounce. Good tosee Cody Morris back in some good goal kicking form too.BWS: Speaking of impressive performances, not a badeffort by Balwyn to get the chocolates over Noble Park lastweekend.BW: Pretty emotional day from what I hear. Dedicatedthe win to the late Shaun Bergin, who was in that welldocumentedon-field collision 12 months ago. The Tigersjust found a way to win.BWS: No three-peat for the Bulls! Surprised?BW: Not really. All good things must come to an end.BWS: Injuries have killed the Bulls of late. Just became alittle too difficult.BW: North Ringwood had a full list to choose from lastweekend and made the most of it!BWS: Saints through to a second consecutive Division 3Grand Final. Solid performance against the Glen WaverleyHawks from start to finish.BW: Heard the Hawks were pretty undisciplined. They’llneed to turn that around sooner rather than later.BWS: Well their division’s namesake was super, knockingover Ringwood.BW: My man finally came to the party! Jason Heath bootedseven goals to lead his side to a comfortable victory.BWS: You love him.BW: On his day, he’s as good as any other forward inDivision 3. Strong hands, good on the lead, accurate andlong left-foot kick. Dangerous to say the least.BWS: Speaking of dangerous, South Belgrave lookeddangerous for a quarter against The Basin last weekend. Butthe undefeated Bears showed their class.BW: Glassborrow’s men go straight into the Division 4‘Choose Tap’ Grand Final. Still undefeated. A phenomenaleffort.BWS: As phenomenal as Silvan’s efforts to go from secondlastin 2011 to a ‘Choose Tap’ preliminary final in 2012?BW: Two different kinds of situations, but it’s hard not toadmire the Cats’ achievements.BWS: No matter what happens today, the Cats should beproud of their efforts this season. Chris Goodlet has done aremarkable job with this playing group.BW: Well, while you’re at it, can Silvan knock- off SouthBelgrave?BWS: No, not quite at South Belgrave’s standard yet. TheSaints will be desperate to avenge last weekend’s loss. Expectthe Saints’ back six to keep Froud and co pretty quiet, whileAppleby and Bakens will kick a winning score up the other end.BW: Agree. Some of the Saints’ quieter players lastweekend, such as Apps and Appleby, will lift and help theirteam to victory.BWS: What about ‘Hawk-off IV’?BW: Mick Gaul’s men have had Boronia’s measure in 2012,winning the previous three ‘Hawk-offs’. Going on 2012form, you’d think Glen Waverley Hawks should get up, butit’s hard not to think about tipping Boronia.BWS: Which is why I think Boronia will win. DrewO’Hare’s men had more scoring shots then Glen WaverleyHawks two weeks ago and could’ve easily won the game. After such a great win last weekend, going for Boronia tocause a mini upset.BW: So a Boronia-North Ringwood Grand Final?BWS: Reckon.BW: Reckon you need to get off the fence and tip a winnerbetween Norwood and Vermont.BWS: Fascinating clash this one. The Eagles pummelledNorwood earlier this season, but the Norsemen’s abilityto bounce back and finish on top of the ladder has goneunder the radar. Yes the game isn’t at Mullum Reserve, yesthe Eagles have more experience. But get the feeling KevTibaldi’s men will be ripe for this one.BW: Can’t agree. Was too impressed by Vermont lastweekend. The Eagles have the class, the form and the biggameexperience. They should win.BWS: Not agreeing on a lot so far my friend.BW: I know! But, like me, you’re a huge Scoresby fan.Agree Scott Whyte’s men can bounce back?BWS: Yeah I do. Perhaps last weekend was the reality checkthe Magpies needed. So many players were down on form, which can be a good thing, because it means they’re due fora big one. Reckon the ‘Pies over Balwyn.BW: Agree. Scoresby had the loss it needed to have lastweekend. Motivation won’t be hard to find now. ‘Pies formine too.BWS: Righto, the big one. The Division 2 ‘Choose Tap’Grand Final. Rowville or Montrose?BW: You’ll have to flick to page seven to find out.BWS: Teaser.BW: Hint, reckon their might be large celebrations at theend of Canterbury Road on Saturday night.BWS: Well I reckon the celebrations will be out at Stud Road!BW: You’ll be crashing the party, no matter where it is.BWS: Can’t wait!3 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2012

DEE TRADES KILOS FOR GOALSBy Daniel CencicPatience, persistence, and morepatience. Those three ingredients wereessential to the development ofGeelong’s Tom Hawkins, whosinglehandedly took the 2011 AFLGrand Final by the scruff of theneck to lead the Cats to a third flagin five years. In essence, Montrose’s Billy Schilling is the EFL equivalent.Add the three ingredients together and the results besttypify Schilling’s 2012 season.Much like Hawkins, Schilling had been a much celebratedkid amongst the junior ranks, booting over 100 goals atUnder 19’s level in 2010.Last season was yet another stepping-stone in the youngDemon’s journey, when he placed seventh on the goalkicking table with 47 majors to his name.Parallel to Hawkins, the expectation had loomed large, and the moment beckoned for his arrival.Enter season 2012, and cometh the man, cometh the hour.It has been this season, and the Division 2 ‘Choose Tap’finals series, where Billy has announced himself ‘TomHawkins-style’.Schilling has booted 71 goals to date, currently sittingsecond behind Mooroolbark’s Kire Talevski. With the Mustangs eliminated, a bag of goals thisweekend will ensure that Schilling finishes the year atopof the goalkicking table.Rising to the occasion against a much-fancied Rowvillein the second semi-final two weeks ago, Schilling provedthe difference. He booted four goals in the Demons’ 24-point win to booktheir place in the 2012 ‘Choose Tap’ Grand Final.Playing-coach Brett Johnson praised the youngspearhead’s performance, but recognises the time andeffort afforded to develop the forward.‘I thought Billy was really good against Rowville,’ he said.‘We’ve been working with him to improve his game incertain areas. He’s starting to improve in his strength inmarking contests. He’s very good on the lead and got agreat set of hands.’The pre-season of 2011-2012 seemed the turning-point inSchilling’s rise up the senior EFL ranks. The EFL Media Team’s very own Dyson Baker declaredon EFL TV earlier in the season that he had ‘lost 20 kilos, gained 20 goals.’Johnson has seen the transformation first-hand.‘Billy’s lost a lot of weight. He’s a different player to whathe was last year,’ Johnson said. ‘He arrived first day ofpre-season training 10 kilos lighter and continued to loseweight over the course of the pre-season and ever since.’And it has been a transformation which has kept theopposition guessing.‘He’s got a lot more tricks up his sleeve now,’ Johnson said. And if Schilling can emulate his form of two weeks agoagainst formidable Grand Final opponent Rowville thisweekend, the resemblance between the two respectivestars will border on the uncanny.‘He can move around a lot, he’s a lot fitter,’ Johnson said.‘I thought he did that really well against Rowville, moving all over the ground and making the most of hisopportunities that he had.‘It was a real polished performance, in terms of the setshots he nailed and the marking opportunities he took.‘He made sure he took them.’Much like the 2011 Tom Hawkins on that last Saturdayin September, Billy Schilling will be looking to take theopposition by storm this Saturday afternoon as he looks toguide his Demons to premiership glory.SURREY PARK FOOTBALL CLUB INC.PLAYERSWANTEDAREYOUAKEYPOSITIONPERSON?SurreyParkFChashadsomeextremelyleanyearsoverrecenttimes.Wehavealarge&successfulJuniorClubandinthenearfuture want to provide a family orientated, successful Club in a higher Division of the EFL.We are looking forkey positionplayerstoaddtoouryoungandenthusiasticplayinggroup.Ifyouhavewhatittakesandwanttobeacatalystforourclub’sfuturesuccess–wewantyouin2013!Ifyouwanttocontributeto: aclubwithagoodplayer&familyculture thedevelopmentofleadershipwithayounggroupofplayerssuccessontheplayingfieldforourseniorteamsWeneedYOUin2013!RemunerationNegotiable&ConfidentialIfyourequirefurtherinformationpleasecallRodonM:0418151446orAndrewonM:04020128865 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2012

BAND OF HAWK BROTHERSBy Peter Baird (Twitter: @frostybaird)There is a well-known clichéaround football circles: ‘Achampion team will always beat ateam of champions’.Some clubs look down the pathof recruiting heavily from outsideto bolster its playing stocks. But for the Rowville Football Club, it is all aboutdevelopment from within. When Rowville coach, Paul Mynott, arrived at theHawks’ nest in 2003, he brought with him a swag ofplayers with experience in higher divisions.Class players such as Nick Cox, Noel Stoddart, RickSmith, Dion Purton, Aaron Cole, and Paul Barlow allpulled on the brown and gold stripes. And the club quickly embarked upon an ascentthrough the Eastern Football League’s divisions.Back-to-back premierships in Division 4 (2003) andDivision 3 (2004), followed by a Division 2 GrandFinal (2005), saw the Hawks come within one winfrom playing in Division 1.Yet Rowville was unable to get the job done that day. Now, seven years later, Mynott has an opportunity tocomplete his mission of taking the club all the way tothe premier division. The Hawks coach reflected on the club’s journey and achange in philosophy since his early days as a coach.‘When I arrived at Rowville, there was no secret that Ibrought with me some quality footballers,’ he said.‘We went close to getting all the way to Division 1,but just couldn’t get there.’Since that loss to Ringwood in the 2005 Grand Final, the Hawks have embarked upon a significant changein direction.‘We now understand that to build for sustained success, you need to develop from within,’ Mynott said.‘We have such a fantastic resourcewith the Rowville Junior FootballClub right in our backyard and withstrengthened ties between the juniorand senior clubs over recent years, wewould be crazy to not look to bring inthe best kids.’Mynott believes the success of a juniorfootball club should not be measured bythe number of premierships won, but ratherthe number of senior footballers produced.‘Of the 22 players in the Rowvilleside that defeated Mooroolbark inthe preliminary final last week, 20 ofthem were Rowville juniors,’ he said.‘I don’t think there would be anyother club in the EFL who could boastthose sorts of numbers.’www.efl.org.au6For Mynott and his team, it is not about individualsthis weekend. The message, all year, has been team first.‘When the players you have running out each weekhave come through your own development system, they have a passion and love for the place,’ Mynottexplained.‘This is their home and having lived in Rowville theirwhole lives, pulling on a Rowville jumper meanssomething to them.‘They are playing with their best mates they went toschool with and have grown from boys into youngmen together.‘They are such are tightknit group who would doanything for each other.’Mynott is hoping that his ‘champion team’ will be ableto go all the way this weekend and the young ‘band ofbrothers’ will take the club into the next chapter of itsproud history.‘With 16 of our 22 players being 23-years-old oryounger, and only two over the age of 26, the club isready to take that next step,’ he said.‘We are building for an era of sustained success atSeebeck Oval, but we need to get the job done thisweekend.‘We are excited by the prospects we have, but are notgetting ahead of ourselves.’The future of the Rowville Football Club looks verybright and with the wealth of talent continually beingproduced by the junior club, it is no wonder Mynotthas been able to forge a team who play for the jumper.Perhaps his proudest moment on a football field willcome just before 5pm this Saturday, if he holds theDivision 2 premiership cup aloft.

DIVISION 2 GRAND FINAL TIPSPeter Baird (EFL Media Team): Some people willsay I'm tipping from my heart but this is straight frommy head. I think Rowville will bounce back after itsloss to Montrose in the Second Semi-Final. This wasthe wakeup call the Hawks needed and they will beready to run Montrose off its feet. Rowville provedit is the best side all year by finishing on top of theDivision 2 ladder and will prove it is ready to take thebig step to Division 1 for 2013. Rowville by 63 points.Blue Ribbon Medallist: Damian Garner (Rowville).Ray Baird (EFL Media Team): The Hawks will winbecause it has a midfield that is fast and back in formafter last week. Along with their backline who havebeen the standout of Division 2 this year, they willminimise the amount of ball Montrose will get into itsforward line and restrict the Demons to a losing score.Billy Schilling has always struggled against Rowvilleand other than his four goals a fortnight ago, has neverhad an impact. Rowville by 24 points. Blue RibbonMedallist: Nathan Hicks (Rowville).Daniel Cencic (EFL Media Team): Rowville will gointo this Grand Final with confidence through the roof. The Hawks hold a 2-1 record against Montrose thisseason, and, to date, managed to shake their recent poorfinals record last weekend. With a mix of young starsand seasoned performers, Paul Mynott and his men areready to take the next step. Hawks by 23 points. BlueRibbon Medallist: Nathan Hicks (Rowville)Braden Ingram (EFL Media Team): Montrose madean outstanding run at the flag in 2011 only to just missout. The Demons have backed that up this year with aneven better home and away season. Their win againstRowville in the first round of the finals will also givethem a huge amount of confidence going in to theGrand Final. Having said all that, I think Rowvillewill be driven by last year’s finals performance and iflasts week’s win against Mooroolbark is an indicator, they are playing their best footy at exactly the righttime. Rowville by 9 points. Blue Ribbon Medallist:Steven Georgiou (Rowville).Noel McPhee (EFL Media Team): The Demons’stronger scoring power, as shown by the highestpoints for this season, and with several avenuesto goal, will take them into Division 1 in 2013.Montrose by 23 points. Blue Ribbon Medallist: BillySchilling (Montrose).Geoff Manolitsa (EFL Media Team): It's littlesurprise that Rowville and Montrose find themselvesin the Division 2 Grand Final after being in the topechelons of the ladder for much of the season. Thisgame is going to be one for the ages. Montrose isan extremely well-rounded team with the likes ofSchilling and Cook up forward, a deep midfieldincluding quality such as Stephen, Sam and JyeGoodman, Johnson and Rickard and two powerfulbig men in Andy Knee and Haining. That beingsaid, Rowville has no shortage of talented players:Georgiou, Stanley, Davey, Frawley, Bussey andSchoenmakers to name a few. Schilling and Cookare clearly the key to this game. If Rowville cannotrestrict the pair to under five goals (in what I thinkwill be a low scoring affair), I believe this game willbe won by the Dees. Montrose by 18 points. BlueRibbon Medallist: Billy Schilling.Paul Semertzidis (EFL Media Team): The Demonshave been the toast of Division 2 for the majorityof 2012. They're multi-pronged forward line will bethe difference and I'm predicting a handful of goalsfrom spearhead Billy Schilling to propel Montroseinto Division 1. Montrose by 35 points. Blue RibbonMedallist: Billy Schilling (Montrose). Will Taylor (EFL Media Team): Montrose willhave the hunger going into today’s grand final afterfalling just short against Lilydale last year. Eventhough Rowville has won the head to head 2-1 thisseason including finals, I truly believe that Montrosehas more dangerous players around the field andthe desire to turn its fortunes around from last year.Montrose by 12 points. Blue Ribbon Medallist: DeanStephen (Montrose).Ben Waterworth (EFL Media Manager): Hard toget a read on this game. Rowville gave Brett Johnson’smen plenty of headaches during the home-and-awayseason, but vice versa a fortnight ago. Matt Stanley’sabsence will hurt the Hawks, especially with the likesof Dean Stephen and the Goodman’s in the middle ofthe ground. With Billy boy in good touch up forward, hard to go past the dees. Montrose by 18 points. BlueRibbon Medallist: Brett Johnson (Montrose).Lauren Wood (EFL Media Team): You knowwhat they say: you've got to lose one to win one.And last year's loss to Lilydale crushed the Demons. There's been some pretty big personnel changesup the mountain, but Montrose has what it takes tomake the jump to Division 1. Rowville shouldn't beunderestimated, though. The likes of Cody Morris, skipper Matt Jackson and Gavin Willoughby workedthemselves into some form against the Mustangs lastweek. RENNIE GILCHRIST:By Ben Waterworth (Twitter: @bjwaterworth)Captaining an EFL Division 1 sideis no simple or tranquil task.Lead by example, lead by voice, lead by discipline – all whileplaying at the highest level.Tough gig.It is why club coaches and committees often turn tomore experienced campaigners, with hundreds ofgames under their belts, to lead their troops onto thefield of battle. But not the Balwyn Football Club.At the age of 23 and with 49 EFL games to his name,Rennie Gilchrist is currently the youngest skipper ofany senior team in Division 1.And when you chat to the man himself, it istransparent to see why he was thrown into the deepchasm so quickly.Despite the challenge and supposed aura of the role, the impressive young Tiger thrives on the captaincychallenge.‘I’ve always thought of myself as a leader in any partof life,’ Gilchrist said.‘Being the sole focus of a leadership group issomething I’ve had to adapt to, but it’s somethingI’m really enjoying.’Balwyn coach Daniel Donati arrived at Cherry Roadlate last year. One of his first tasks was to assign a captain to thesenior side.It did not take him long to decide.‘Two weeks into the job, I knew Rennie was theman,’ Donati said.‘I pulled him aside in December and asked him ifbeing captain was something he wanted to do.‘He told me he’d love to do it and it would help hisfootball, so he said all the right things.’Contrary to other captain appointments, Donati saysGilchrist’s youthfulness was a major reason why hewas chosen.‘I’m all for young leaders and Rennie can help be theglue that keeps this playing group together for thenext five to 10 years,’ Donati said.‘He’s such an influential person amongst the groupand is good mates with everyone.‘He’s a mature and impressive young kid, perhapsthe most competitive 23-year-old footballer I’ve everseen.‘He commands the respect of the players and leadsby example because he trains so hard.’However, without being arrogant, Gilchrist honestlywww.efl.org.au8believes the Balwyn captaincyhas been ‘quite an easy role’ tofit in to.‘There are such a great bunch ofsenior blokes around me who giveme great support,’ he said.‘Ryan McMahon, Stevie Kenna,Rod Crowe, Ben Harris, there’salso a good bunch of youngleaders coming through.’However Gilchrist says vice-captain, and best mate,Charlie Hendrie, has given him invaluable assistanceduring his debut skipper season.‘Charlie’s been like a co-captain for me,’ he said.‘Whenever I need a break, he is always there to helpme out.’Hendrie was ‘wrapt’ for his best mate when the latterwas named captain during the pre-season.He says Gilchrist has been a pleasure to play andtrain under ever since the appointment.‘Rennie is a guy who leads by his actions, rather thaninspiration,’ Hendrie said.‘He really wears his heart on his sleeve, almost to thepoint where he gets white line fever.‘He’s well balanced, runs hard and has got thatcompetitive edge that he carries into a game.’Gilchrist admits leading such a prestigious playinggroup keeps him ‘on his toes’.‘It’s a massive challenge,’ he said.‘You’re always wanting to be leading from thefront, whether it’s getting the old blokes excitedfor training on a wet Tuesday night, or keeping theyounger guys calm on game day.‘But it’s all good fun and I’m really enjoying it.’While Gilchrist admits his aerobic capacity is a hugeadvantage, he believes his ability to know where torun is just as important.‘Everyone talks about gut running, but smartrunning is one of my biggeststrengths,’ he said.‘I also get some great blocksfrom my teammates, whichalways helps.’On the field, Gilchrist is acoach’s dream. He is tough, relentless, ferocious, tenacious, fit andhard-working.However, the hard side ofGilchrist is nowhere to beseen off the footy field.

A LEADER BEYOND HIS YEARSJust ask close friend Hendrie.‘Rennie’s actually quite a gentle bloke,’ he said.‘He’s doing his study to become a teacher and got agreat head on his shoulders.’Gilchrist was a big reason why the Tigers advancedthrough to the Division 1 ‘Choose Tap’ First Semi-Final against Scoresby. The skipper led from the front in the midfield lastweekend, guiding his team to a 37-point victory overNoble Park.Donati says his skipper has been an outstandingleader and contributor all season.‘<strong>Finals</strong> games are when you win your reputation –and Rennie won his on Sunday,’ he said.‘Rennie was enormous in the last quarter and got usup and going with his voice.‘He just didn’t stop running all day and the taggersdidn’t worry him.’Going into last weekend’s match, the Bulls hadbeaten the Tigers on the past three occasions. But Gilchrist says his troops had really setthemselves for the big occasion and were able todeliver on the big stage.‘All our cards fell into place and we were able toexecute our game plan,’ he said.‘In those third and final quarters, we dug deep and itall just clicked.’Gilchrist is looking forward to playing againstScoresby and lining up on opposite skipper AdamParker.Parker is the second-youngest Division 1 captain atthe age of 24.‘I don’t know Adam very well personally, but Ialways have a good chat to him after a game,’Gilchrist said.‘He’s an absolute star and can singlehandedly win histeam a game.’Balwyn and Scoresby have met twice in 2012, withthe ledger sitting at 1-1 after both team’s securedvictories at their respective home grounds.Gilchrist says his team will go into Sunday’s matchat a neutral venue with confidence.‘One of our best mental strengths is the self-belief inour group,’ he said.‘If games are tight and we’re in a clutch situation, weknow we can stand up.‘Our performance against Noble Park will hold us ingood stead.’The only elephant in the room surrounding Gilchristis his unique first name.Rennie – how did he manage to score a name likethat?‘It was my Mum’s Grandfather’s name, given to himfrom his mother’s maiden name,’ he said.‘So it’s my great, great grandmother’s maiden name.’Surely no one else in the world would be calledRennie?Surely?‘Actually I once met a Canadian girl who has abrother called Rennie.’Well, you learn something new every day.And of course there have been plenty of jokes andcomparisons to his namesake Adam – arguably thegreatest wicketkeeper-batsman in cricket history.‘Plenty, especially when I was younger,’ he laughed.Ironically, Rennie opened the batting and keptwickets as a junior cricketer. However it is has never been the midfielder’s uniquename that has turned the heads of his teammates, supporters or opponents on the field. It has always been his skill with the footy, histenacity at the contest, his professionalism on thefield and his discipline off it.That is why people take note of Rennie Gilchrist –the youngest Division 1 captain in the EFL.One day, he might be the oldest.9 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2012

FROSTY’S EFL THERMOMETEREach week, Peter Baird takes a look at the teams or players in the EFL that are catching our attention with theirgood, or bad, form. After careful deliberation, he puts the thermometer on the EFL and gives you his weeklynomination as to who’s hot and who’s cold.ON FIRESometimes it is described as ‘the monkey on the back’while others talk about the ‘elephant in the room’.Whatever you want to call it, some teams have baggagefrom past years when it comes to playing finals football.A murmur starts to develop in the lead up to the finalsseries and questions begin to get raised as to how the teamwill perform on the big stage and whether it will crumbleunder the pressure. There are a few clubs in the EasternFootball League that know this scenario all too well. Inthe lead up to last weekend’s finals games in Divisions2, 3 and 4, Rowville, North Ringwood and The Basinall were battling the demons of past finals series. Afterfinishing atop the Division 2 ladder this year, Rowvilleheaded into its Second Semi-Final against Montrose fullof confidence. However a shock loss to the Demonshad people wondering the Hawks were still suffering afinals hoodoo. Six losses from their past eight encounters, including the last four in-a-row, had observers questioningwhether or not the Hawks could be eliminated in straightsets two years in a row. For North Ringwood in Division3, there had been much hype about its failed finalscampaigns of 2010 and 2011. The Saints had earnedthe double chance both years and, after a straight setsdeparture in 2010 and a 1-2 record last year falling toDoncaster in the Grand Final by 65 points, finishing ontop this year was never going to be enough. For TheBasin, the record is perhaps even more daunting. Sinceits 2005 Second Semi Final win over the Waverley Blues, the Bears have played nine finals for just the solitarywin. Taking these records into last weekend, all threeteams stood up on the big stage, with Rowville smashingMooroolbark by 70 points, North Ringwood defeating theGlen Waverley Hawks by 31, and The Basin running out24-point victors over South Belgrave. For breaking theirfinals hoodoo last weekend, all three earn themselves theirplace in Frosty’s Furnace this week.YOUR GAME TODAYGONE COLD“The king is dead!” It is a phrase that has been used overtime to mark the passing of a ruler and the ascension to thethrone of a new monarch, as happened in 1952, when KingGeorge VI died and was succeeded by his daughter, QueenElizabeth II. On August 16, 1977, newspapers around theworld headlined their story of the death of Elvis Presleywith the same phrase. This week in the Eastern FootballLeague, it is somewhat fitting that Frosty’s Thermometermarks the end of the dynasty of the Noble Park FootballClub with the same catch cry. For the past two years, theBulls have dominated the Eastern Football League Division1 competition on their way to claiming back-to-backsenior flags. During this time, Noble Park has exerted asupremacy over its competitors and ruled the league, playingan attacking brand of disciplined, hard-edged football. TheBulls have been ruthless under coach Mick Fogarty. LastSunday out at Tormore Reserve in Boronia though, NoblePark was removed from its throne at the hands of long timearchrival Balwyn in the ‘Choose Tap’ Elimination Final. TheBulls were gallant right to the end, like a gracious monarch,in their attempt to complete a premiership three-peat. But aseason that was crippled by injuries to key players becamea hurdle too vast to overcome. Throughout the year, NoblePark lost skipper and reigning Chandler Medallist, CraigAnderson, as well as Brad Scalzo, to season-ending injuriesand were without the services of key players like ZiggieAlwan, Luky Cody, Glen Manson, Stewart Kemperman, and Craig Jacotine for extended periods. The end for Bullscame swiftly and mercifully, though, as Balwyn allowed theother Division 1 finalists to take a collective sigh of relief atthe elimination of Noble Park for season 2012. Only oncebefore has Noble Park not recorded a win in a month offootball, back in its EFL debut season of 2000. With fourconsecutive losses to end their 2012 campaign, the Bulls areforced to resign themselves into a place in Frosty’s Freezer.“Long live the King!”Wherever you are, whoever you’re watching, keep track of the scores and goals! DIVISION 1 CLUB NOTESBALWYN: What a terrific result last week as we were ableto prevail in a cut-throat game that was close all day, untilwe finally got away in the last quarter. The game held extraspecial significance for the Balwyn team and supportergroup, being almost a year to the day since the tragic eventsthat saw Shaun Bergin leave us far too soon. The Tigershonoured Shaun in the best possible way, by emergingtriumphant from a hard-fought finals match. As CoachDaniel Donati said in the rooms later, Shaun will be withus in spirit in every game from here on, noting the decisionmade late last year that the Best <strong>Finals</strong> Player Trophy willin future be named after Shaun. In fact the Tigers mightwell have set a record for the most people crammed intothose rooms after the match, as the victory song was beltedout with gusto! So today we are back at Boronia withScoresby as our opponent and the equation stays the same– we just need to win! Good luck boys – believe! To all yousupporters here today, wear your colours proudly, supportour boys loudly – make sure they can see and hear you…itreally does make a difference! Go Tigers!!!EAST RINGWOOD: The considerable and alwaysbreezy expanses of Tormore Reserve was the scene forboth our U19s and Reserves teams in cut-throat finals. After an arm-wrestle with the Eagles, our boys played aninspired final quarter into the wind to hold them off andwin the game by seven points. The young ‘Roos now faceNorwood this week with the winner to advance to thesecond last game of the season. The Reserves encounterwith Norwood was also tight and error-ridden in the gustybreeze. But after a sluggish first half, the ‘Roos lifted theirintensity to finish with plenty of run, eventually winningby 10 points. Their reward is a meeting with Knox in thefirst semi-final. For the information of supporters, theafter match with awards takes place in our pavilion at5pm. Don’t forget, the best Grand Final Breakfast in theEast will happen again this year at the Maroondah Club.Once again, the award-winning SEN and Sky star JasonRichardson will introduce some terrific guests and ticketsare selling fast. Further details will be on the website soon. The Senior Best & Fairest vote count will be held in thepavilion on the Sunday immediately after the Reserves’final game of the year. Let’s hope that day follows anotherflag and that all supporters get along. Our last and mostimportant function for the season is the Presentation Ballon Saturday, October 6. Make sure you visit the websitewhere a link will provide booking details. Don’t missthe boat as some folk did last year. Further details of allof functions, club news and match summaries, visit ourwebsite at www.erfc.com.au! GO ROOS!KNOX: Today we are out to Boronia to face EastRingwood in an elimination final. It was a disappointingday for the Falcons last week, with the reserves goingdown to Noble Park. In a contest that started very wellfor us, we saw it slip away with poor decision-makingand disposal. In the first quarter we came out firing withthe first couple of goals. Looking comfortable at quarterDIVISION 1time with a 12-point lead, the second quarter was a veryeven affair. A lower scoring quarter saw us taking a13-point lead into the major break. The third quarter iswhere it all went wrong for the Falcons, letting the Bullskick four unanswered goals on the back of poor disposaland immature mistakes. The last term was much like thesecond, very contested and even seeing the Bulls run out11-point winners. The best on the day were Britts, JD, MJ,Saundo, Hammer and Greaves. This week’s player profileis the ever slick Paul “Cyril” Tyler. Paul loves shakinghis thing on and off the field. He is a known erotic dancerwho just loves to boogie. Good luck to all players todayand go Falcons!LILYDALE: What a great win by the Under 19s againstNorwood at Bayswater last week in the QualifyingFinal. Now we take on minor premiers Scoresby. Afterthe pressure of the first half waned, the win came froma much more productive third quarter when we startedto work hard for the ball, hit targets and kick accurately. But to win by 3.13 means we have problem Houston. Butone on which we can improve. The goals were sharedwhich the trend is these days taking the pressure off thekey forwards. Better players were Sam Horsley, BraydenSchembri, Billy Gardner, Matthew Wierzbicki, AdamNyok, and Marcus O’Donohue. The pressure markingof Brad Lowe was a delight to see. Our Club is hostingthe Vets Grand Final between Mooroolbark and Kilsythtomorrow Sunday 9 September. Come down to watchor help out. Refreshments available, BBQ going andCanteen operating. DIVISION 1 CLUB NOTEScampaign that we had hoped for with both our Reservesand U19's losing. While the seniors were rewarded witha week off for finishing top the Reserves had a do ordie clash against East Ringwood. We came out with animpressive first quarter that allowed us to hold the leadat every change. Unfortunately the last quarter was oneto forget with the opposition running away with the winand ending our Reserves season. It was a great effort byour boys to make it to the finals well done! Best playersDunne, Casey, Corwall, Seegar and Aarowsmith. Thecolts were also unsuccessful with their opening finalsmatch. Again they came out firing setting up a solid leadthat we held until half time. The third quarter was horriblewith Lilydale totally derailing our game and controllingthe game until the final siren. The boys have a secondchance this week to redeem themselves and rightfullyhold their position in the premiership race. Best playersSchille, Black, Pearson, McBride, Stringer and Philp. This week the Seniors have a tough battle against thefinals specialists Vermont with the winner booking a spotin the GF. The U19’s roll out for the first time this finalseries against the very talented Lilydale who won theirway into the Second Semi-Final with a solid win overNorwood. We will need to be on top of our game if weare to book a spot at the big dance. Best of luck boysand congratulations on a magnificent year so far that hasseen a second minor premiership in two years. Let’smake it two in a row for both. Some astute readers willhave noticed an advertisement for both an U17 andalso an U19’s coach for season 2013. The Under 19’s unfortunatelycould not get over the line and their season is over. The better players were Matt Gould, Matt McClusky,Paul White, Jarryd Smith, Connor McCafferty, JamesPritchard and Ted Lindon. They have done a great job, considering the boys they have lost to the Reservesand Seniors. Well done to Coach Graeme Hocking andall his helpers. U19 GRAND FINAL PREVIEWBy Will TaylorThe very first premiership winning team of 2012 willbe crowned this morning in the Division 2 EastLinkUnder 19’s ‘Choose Tap’ Grand Final at Jubilee Park. And there is no doubt in my mind that this will be aripping ‘Choose Tap’ Grand Final clash between twoof the best teams in the competition: Doncaster Eastand Upper Ferntree Gully. These two teams finished second and thirdrespectively behind Rowville on the ladder. At thecompletion of the home and away season, they wereonly separated by half a game. The Lions and the Kings met twice during the homeand away season, with the ledger squared at 1-1.The first meeting was at Zerbes Reserve, with UpperFerntree Gully recording a 50-point win. The Gellieboys, Patrick and Liam, caused havoc for the Lions, with Patrick booting four goals and Liam being namedbest player on the ground. However the Lions reversed the result in the secondencounter, recording a solid 22-point win at Kings Park.Jeremy Musso booted two goals and was named best onground for Doncaster East, while Upper Ferntree Gully’sKelsey Currie booted three goals. The road to the HolyGrail for these two teams has been full of victories. In the first week of the finals, Doncaster East upset thehighly-fancied Rowville by two goals in the SecondSemi-Final to earn itself a spot in today’s big match.Upper Gully had to go the long way round. The Kingsproduced a strong 34-point win over Donvale in thefirst semi-final to progress through to the ‘Choose Tap’preliminary final. What followed, many didn’t expect. The Kings caused arguably the upset of the season, producing an amazing three-point win over the Hawksto send the latter out in straight sets. There are three standout Upper Gully players to watchout for today. Jordan Whiteman, Liam Gellie andTyler Willis have each been named in the Kings’ bestplayers 10 times in 2012.The Kings have also been good at spreading theirgoal kickers, with five players kicking at least 20goals this season. Brent Jordan and Jai Hardwick havebeen Doncaster East’s most consistent performersthroughout this season, being named in the bestplayers an incredible 15 and 14 times respectively. On the goal front, Matthew Vaiano has been indangerous form for the Lions all season, booting 37goals, including a bag of five against Upper FerntreeGully in <strong>Round</strong> 5.My tip?In a fast and free-flowing game of footy on the bigspans of Jubilee Park, I think Doncaster East will winthis match by one goal in an absolute thriller.20% toll discount forweekend gamesIf you have an account, EastLink car tolls are discounted by 20%all weekend, every weekend.Visit EastLink.com.auDriving EastLink27 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2012

YOUNG GUNBy Conor Ryan, Leader NewspapersCOREY WALKER – GLEN WAVERLEY HAWKSThe way they’re travelling, the Glen Waverley Hawks look everyinch a club with a bright future. And Corey Walker is one manwho’ll be a big part of that future. Already a deputy vice-captain ofthe club at just 19 years of age, Walker has established himself as avital cog in the Hawks’ engine. He was at the fore when the club went within a whisker of theDivision 4 flag in 2011, and he has been there again to lift GlenWaverley into the Division 3 finals at its first attempt. Walker isthis week’s Leader Community Newspapers EFL Young GunAwards nominee for Divisions 3 and 4.Glen Waverley coach Mick Gaul said Walker was an outstandingcontributor, on and off the field.‘‘Corey has all the leadership traits to be potentially an outstandingleader for the club,’’ he said. ‘‘He’s an exceptional talent on thefield. A beautiful left-foot kick, sensational skills and an ability tohold his feet no matter the situation.‘‘We’re looking at him as a long-term prospect and potentially acaptain for the club.’’Walker has made his way mopping up across halfback for theHawks, with the occasional foray into the midfield. With Corey playing alongside older brother Clint, the Walkersmake an impressive pairing.Gaul described the pair as chalk and cheese, with Corey’sindustriousness at odds with Clint’s more languid style.‘‘Corey’s a unique player. He’s very versatile, which is one of thebeautiful things about him as a player,’’ he said.‘‘He has an exceptional ability to read the play. He’ll certainly playa big part of our campaign, no doubt about that.’’LEADER YOUNG GUN NOMINEESNominations for the Division 1/2 and Division 3/4 LeaderYoung Gun awards have closed. Thank you to everyone whonominated players throughout 2012.Below is a list of players who were nominated each weekthroughout the season. LUCK OF THE DREWBy Paul SemertzidisThere is more to coaching than meets theeye. At any one time, any coach of anyside can be playing the role of a father, acounselor, a mate and even a boss.Taking on such a role is not for thefainthearted.A coach’s box on a Saturday afternooncan often be one of the loneliest placesin the world. But nobody told Boronia’s Drew O’Hare that.In the final third of 2012, when the Boronia Hawksdecided it was time for Peter Bennett to step awayfrom the top job, many EFL pundits were skeptical aviable replacement would be found.Even more thought the inhabitants of Tormore Reservewould fall away and struggle to play any part comeSeptember. The Hawks made a landmark decision when theyappointed O’Hare, the club’s reserves coach of thepast eight seasons, to take over the top job.Coaching one side is no doubt hard enough, but O’Harethrived in his position of both senior and reserves coachover the final two months of the season. With his senior side playing in a preliminary final thisweekend and his reserves headed for the big dance ina fortnight’s time, nobody is under any illusions as towhether the right decision was made. But there are a number of EFL people scratching theirheads as to how he found the correct balance betweenthe two sides.O’Hare himself plays down his own role and wasadamant the club and his support staff have goneabove and beyond the call of duty to make thissomewhat strange situation as easy as possible.‘It’s been an interesting and tough six weeks, but theboys have been fantastic,’ he said.‘Everyone’s been very supportive of what we’re tryingto do.O’Hare believes most down at the Hawks nowunderstand the direction the club decided to go downseven weeks ago.‘As it is now, we’ve got two sides in the finals andwe’re still going strong,’ he said.‘Hopefully the fact that I’m doing both is not takingaway anything from one or the other team.‘Now that both teams are through to the next stage, hopefully the proof at the end of the day is in theresults we’ve achieved.’The Hawks coach credits his playing group and hisassistant coaches for being able to adapt to a uniquesituation so quickly.‘I’m sure it’s hard for the players not to have the directsupport of a one’s coach and a two’s coach,’ he said.‘But I have got fantastic assistant coaches in bothgrades, who have taken on an awful lot as well.’Believe it or not, O’Hare isn’t the first coach to‘double up’ at EFL level.During the early 2000’s, former Templestowe andChirnside Park front man Brett Davidson coachedboth the reserves and senior sides at Norwood.‘It is important that you think purely as a seniorcoach,’ Davidson said.‘The toughest period is late in a reserves game whenyour mindset can’t help but switch.‘I suppose I was lucky in 2003 with the fantasticbunch of senior reserves players I had to sort of pickup my slack.’The amount of pressure placed on any coach is enormous. Therefore, Davidson is emphatic that coaching twosides at the same time bears far too much weight onjust one man.If Boronia’s seniors were to join the reserves inplaying off in a Grand Final, Davidson says O’Hare‘must reduce his match day role’ for the reserves.Davidson believes that Boronia can definitely win thesenior premiership, but it will not be easy.‘They have to have everything go their way,’ he said. This season hasn’t been as smooth as what Boroniahas been used to in Division 3 over recent years. While the Hawks’ long jeopardy in finals footy hascontinued thanks to another top three-finish, theycertainly got there the long way around. The club lost six games during the Home and Awayseason for the first time in a long time. Thanks to the tightness surrounding the Division3 senior ladder though, they were able to securethemselves the ever important double-chance.While the Hawks’ efforts against the Glen WaverlyHawks in the ‘Choose Tap’ Qualifying Final turned out to37 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2012

LUCK OF THE DREWbe futile, the club knows how to play finals footy. And nobody involved at Tormore Reserve would besurprised by a Division 2 berth in 2013.Super coach O ‘Hare is keeping his cards close to his chest.‘It was a bit of a letdown against Glen Waverley twoweeks ago, we coughed up the ball a fair bit and it hurtus in the end,’ he said.‘But thanks to the double chance, we’ve got another shot.’It looks as though the cards are starting to fall Boroniaand O’Hare’s way.Champion midfielder and three-time Division 3 Bestand Fairest winner, Dean Grice, made a successfulcomeback from the knee injury which so cruelly kepthim out of Port Melbourne’s VFL campaign.Grice’s class and smooth use of the footy was awelcome return to the side in ‘Hawk-off III’ afortnight ago.‘We rolled the dice and brought a fair few back inagainst Glen Waverley,’ O’Hare said.‘Sometimes guys get picked on what they’ve done inthe past and on their reputation. A couple of them wereprobably underdone, so they’ll be better for it.’However there will be no respite for poor old O’Hareover the next two weeks. This ‘Choose Tap’ EFL finals series will be as difficult aperiod as he has come across in his tenure at Boronia. The toast of the football club, the seniors, will be playingin yet another preliminary final against their newest EFLrival, the Glen Waverly Hawks, this weekend.Yet his beloved reserves side have booked themselvesa spot in the Grand Final after defeating WantirnaSouth in the second semi-final last weekend.‘That last quarter against Wantirna South wasprobably the best quarter of footy since we beat NorthRingwood in last year’s Grand Final,’ he said.‘All things being fair, we’ll probably play Wantirna Southagain in the Grand Final.‘They are a fantastic side and we certainly can’t takethem for granted.’The challenge now for O’Hare is to finalise his bestsenior 22.Will Matt Buzinskus be back in the mix?Has Jess Bolton done enough to earn a return?Drew O’Hare, the man with the goatee, must find theanswers to these questions in a bid to forever etch himselfinto the Eastern FootballLeague’s record books. What a remarkable effortit would be if O’Hare wasable to deliver the Hawks apremiership double. If that were to happen, surely he would become themayor of Boronia.Maybe he’d even considerretaining his position as thehead coach of two separatefootball teams?BURMEISTER PROJECTS PTY LTDFor a free quote and a professional serviceon all Building & Construction projectsplease call Dave or TimDave: 0422 734 660 Tim: 0421 442 936www.efl.org.au38

DIVISION 3 CLUB NOTESBORONIA: Bad luck to the under 19’s who finished theirseason going down by 15 points. The boys staged a bravecome back, getting within one point half way through thelast quarter, but were then outplayed. The future of theclub is looking great with these guys considering most ofthem are still bottom age. Stick together and I’m sure youwill achieve greatness next season. The seniors smashedon eight goals in the last quarter to eventually win by 40odd points. Big Heathy booted seven majors and withNath Allen, Moorey and super model Patty getting plentyof the ball, it was a great result. Thursday night is the votecount so all get down for a meal and drink and see wholooks like taking out the awards this season, 7pm kickoff. Presentation night is 28 September, 7pm at The KnoxClub. Please book tickets early. RSVP timcurrie@iinet.net.au or 0412938678. A huge thankyou goes to DavidMurrihy and all volunteers for their massive dedicationin hosting finals. It’s always a tough gig when playingand hosting at the same time, but with Murra’s expertisethey got through it once again. Bearing in mind we haveone day to go. This Sunday we host first division and aswe know many hands make light work so put your handup even if only for a couple of hours. This Saturday wetake on the Glen Waverley Hawks for the fourth timethis season. With our record against them at 0-3, it’s ourtime to turn the tables and book a Grand Final berth. Allsupporters get down to East Burwood Reserve game startsat 2pm. Over and out from me and Get Up Hawka!GLEN WAVERLEY HAWKS: Last week we came upagainst a well drilled and disciplined North Ringwood, while we had most of the play in the first quarter we werenot able to put the score on the board. At quarter timewe found ourselves behind. We were not able to closethe initial gap for the rest of the day. Best for the daywere the young ones of the side – Tim Cook and DavidLang. Today however we have the opportunity to redeemourselves but this will only happen if we can step backup and play the footy we all know we can. We all knowBoronia are a very good side and if we give them a sniffthey will take every advantage. Don’t forget PresentationNight 21 September, numbers are limited so makesure you get your name down and pay the ladies at ourclubrooms.GO Hawks!NORTH RINGWOOD: Our Under 19's took to thefield looking for a first week finals win to go straightinto their fourth consecutive Grand Final. UnfortunatelyTemplestowe had other ideas and came out stronger andmore committed and took control of the game for most ofthe day never allowing us to play our natural game. Thisweek in a do-or-die match we take on Ringwood, anotherteam we have had some great matches against this year,so we will need to be switched on from the start if youwant to play for your fourth flag. Our Reserves have hadto fight each week to get to where they are today playingthe team that finished top after the home and away seasonto get a spot in the big dance. Our boys have had to comefrom fifth spot and each week do themselves and the clubproud with two great wins so far against Mitcham andRingwood, keep going boys. After two disappointingfinal series, our Senior boys were ready to take on GlenWaverley and hoping to finally get a first up win and gostraight in to the big one. The Hawks started off bettercontrolling most of the first quarter but we managed toget back into the game went into the main break 22 pointsup. We had some wasted chances in the third but still gotout to a 40-point lead before a couple of late goals to GWtook it back to game on going into the last. A couple ofearly goals gave us a nice buffer and we went on to winby 31 points and the result we were looking for, a spot inthe 2012 Grand Final. Let’s all get behind our U19’s andReserves this week as we fight to get all three teams intonext weeks Grand <strong>Finals</strong>. Go Saints!RINGWOOD: Last weekend unfortunately the Seniorsand Reserves seasons came to an end after sufferingdefeats in their semi-finals. However the U19's continuedtheir recent good form and play off for a grand final spotin today’s preliminary final. The Under's started welland after establishing an early three to four goal lead hadcontrol for the majority of the game. Today they take onNorth Ringwood at East Burwood and we urge everyoneto get behind the boys and cheer them on to what we hopeis a grand final berth. The Reserves conceded an earlyfive-goal lead and played catch up footy for the rest ofthe game. The Seniors were locked in a tight contest forthe majority of the game and after taking the lead late inthe third quarter were starting to get their running gamegoing. However Boronia lifted and won the game in thefirst 15 minutes of the last quarter when they piled onthe goals and proved to be the better side on the day. Allmembers and supporters are proud of the seasons both theSeniors and Reserves have had and it’s a good sign forthe seasons ahead. A big thanks to all our volunteers whohave helped the club run a very successful Division 2 finalseries at Jubilee Park, the committee are very gratefulfor your great dedication and support. A reminder thePresentation night is being held on Friday September 28,so please book your table and purchase your ticket ASAP.Full details are displayed in the social rooms. Good luckto Shane and the 19's for their big match today.WANTIRNA SOUTH: A disappointing result lastSaturday for the Reserves. In the first half the boys werein control and getting the ball down deep into the forwardline, however they did not capitalise on the opportunitiesand time the ball was there. A lapse in concentration inthe last 10 minutes of the second quarter let Boronia in fortwo goals and while we were up by 15 points they wentinto halftime on a high. The third quarter was a seesawevent and at the break we still held a seven-point lead.Unfortunately in the last we were completely outplayedgoing down by 34 points, our biggest loss for the year.By finishing the season on top of the ladder the boyshave earned themselves another opportunity and thisweek take on North Ringwood. Good luck boys as theyrun out today to try and win a spot in next week’s GF.After today’s game, come on down to the Club for a fewrefreshments. Don't forget the Presentation Night onSaturday 22 September at the Knox Club, cost is $50 perhead which includes a two-course meal with drinks at barprices. A SAINTS HOMECOMINGBy Andy PaolacciWe all love the feeling of coming home.We love it even more when dinner iswaiting for us on the table. For Dustin Apps and Alex Bakens, twoof South Belgrave's favourite sons, theyhave come back to where it all started, hungry for a feed.Their dinner, though, is premiership success. And the 2012 season could be the year of the Saints. The story of how Apps and Bakens came back to theSaints in the first place dates back to when they were kids. The duo grew up playing together, kick-starting agood, old-fashioned friendship. However, as 'Dusty' will tell you, there's been plentyof heartache along the way for the club.'I played nearly all my career at South,' Apps said.'Alex and I lost a lot of Grand <strong>Finals</strong>, eight Grand <strong>Finals</strong>in total through juniors and seniors, so it was hard.'The Saints' hierarchy obviously recognised Apps andBakens’ talents once they reached senior level. The club made the tough, yet honourable, decision toadvise the duo to try their hands in the upper echelonsof the EFL.Apps was the first to go.He left to play for Knox in 2006, while Bakensfollowed suit in 2007.Apps remembers the time he went searching for a newclub some six years ago and how the decision wasessentially an easy one to make.'I went around to a few of the clubs, but Knox was theclub I chose,' Apps said.'All the boys down at the club were really good blokesand easy to get along with, so I started playing footballdown there.'The move to the Falcons proved to be a masterstroke, with the duo playing prominent roles in the club’sfamous 2007 Division 2 premiership. In a match that lives long in the memory of manyan EFL pundit, Knox drew with South Croydon in abelter of a game, before the Falcons soared to victoryin extra time.Apps, who is one of the most versatile players inDivision 4, remembers how physically grueling thematch was.'I was just happy the game finished with a result really.I was just so tired,' he said.'It was hard to get across the line, but winning thatGrand Final was amazing.'Bakens, a player who possesses an excellent set ofhands and an eye for goal, recalls the match well.He is quick to highlight the influences both Apps andhim had on the match.'Dusty was best on ground. He played really, reallywww.efl.org.au50well,' Bakens said.'I kicked four that day, so we both had pretty goodgames.‘It was fantastic. It was magnificent.'Both players enjoyed successful four-year stints withthe Falcons returning home to South Belgrave insearch of that ‘home' premiership. It clearly means a lot to both Apps and Bakens.‘Everyone’s been great,’ Apps said.‘The coaches have put so much time and effort intome to generate me into the player I've become.Apps says everyone looks after each other down at theSaints.'You feel so welcome every time you walk in there andgo to training,’ he said.‘On the weekends, everyone is there chatting to eachother.'Bakens agrees with Apps and saw his decision toreturn to the Saints as a no-brainer.'This is where I started and it'd be the same if I was atany other EFL club coming home,’ Bakens said.'I love the club. There are some fantastic people here, afantastic culture and an excellent place to spend the winter.'The Saints are just two games away from achieving theirgoal of holding the Division 4 premiership cup aloft. But they face a stern challenge against a Silvan sidekeen to write some history of its own this weekend.'It's a big game for our club as it is a big opportunity toget into our first EFL Grand Final,’ Bakens said.'This is the whole idea of why we came back. This iswhat we play for.'As for Apps, his determination to see South Belgravewin their first senior premiership since 1996, comespart and parcel with the club’s culture.'I just felt to win a premiership down at my home club, especially after we had lost so many, was something Ireally wanted to do,’ he said.'Now our team's really strong. We're getting better eachyear and we're hoping the premiership comes this year.’If Bakens and Apps are at their best over the nexttwo weeks and guide their team to the flag, thehomecoming will all be worthwhile.DIVISION 3 FINALS SERIES

DIVISION 4 CLUB NOTESPARK ORCHARDS: A sunny Walker Park, perfectconditions for finals football as the Sharks’ Under 19side kicked off their finals campaign against the muchimproved Ferntree Gully Eagles. It was a great game offootball with the skill and commitment of both sides ondisplay. It is a football truism that there is no point gettingthe double chance in finals if you don’t use it. And so itwas for the Sharks as they went down by eight points. Thiswill, no doubt, be the reality check coach Tony Weeks willrely on as the Sharks now face a sudden death PreliminaryFinal against another well-credentialed side in SurreyPark. We call on all Sharks supporters to get down toWalker Park, Mitcham at 9.40am Sunday 9 September tosupport the Under 19s and watch what should be a greatGame of Football. We take this opportunity to encouragepassionate support at the finals, but remember the need forthis support to be demonstrated in the correct manner. Weneed to allow the umpires to do their job and we shouldnot be focused on or make comments about them. Weneed to refrain from derogatory comments to or aboutopposition players, officials and supporters. UpcomingEvents: On Sunday 16 September, we will be conductingour vote count at Domeney (aka The Shark Tank) for allthree teams starting at 12.30pm. All players and supporterswelcome. Our final event for the season will be ourPresentation Night on Friday 28 September at the Coachand Horses Hotel, Ringwood. In addition to announcingand presenting awards to the various winners, we will alsoacknowledge those people who have made a significantcontribution to our first full year. So for the PreliminaryFinal today… Once team will walk out of Walker ParkGrand Finalists the other will just walk out. Go Sharks!SILVAN: With a fanatastic team effort against FerntreeGully last week, today we have given ourselves a crackat a Preliminary Final. Beautiful conditions greeted us atBoronia last week in what was a do-or-die game againstFerntree Gully. From the outset the Cats controlled thegame, bad kicking was our biggest concern throughoutthe day – 12.24 was not what coach Goodlet was after, however the team effort is exactly what he will be lookingfor today against South Belgrave. Good luck to the 22players representing the club today. September 21, wewill be having our Presentation Night. It will be againheld at Club Kilsyth, so to book your seats please contactCharlie with numbers. His contacts can be found on theclub website. Thanks again to all our valued sponsors, TaraPress, Clearshield, Bendigo Bank (Wandin/Seville branch),Porter Davis Homes, Veolia, Blue Hills Berries, SuperfinishPrestige Repairs, Club Kilsyth, Eco Liquid Waste, MipaPaints, Central Scaffolds, Silvandale Transport, Perftech,Cracka Wines, Bretrac Engineering, Foothills FinanicalServices, R & E Panelmasters, J & N Excavations, AegisAustralia, Wandin Pizza Bar, Bakker & Co, RoadfreshTransport and Boronia IGA. Good luck today, Go Cats.SOUTH BELGRAVE: As they say a week is a long timein football and how quickly emotions can change. SouthBelgrave Football Club experienced the bitter pill of threelosses last weekend. Sadly it was the end of the U19’sfinals campaign for 2012 as they bowed out to a strongSurrey Park who suffered a shock loss in week one. Theboys trailed all match but were always within reach andthe final margin was not indicative of the competitivenessof the match. We hope the majority of the guys returnin 2013 to play for South Belgrave. Thanks to all theparents who have helped Hugh and Brian on match daysthroughout the season. The Reserves started as favouritesagainst Forest Hill as they won their last encounterconvincingly. However the game didn’t go to plan and theboys found themselves behind all day and eventually fellshort by 25 points. The seniors jumped out of the blockskicking with a four to five-goal breeze, but didn’t reallytake advantage of putting a damaging score on the board. The Basin took advantage in the second term with thewind and booted six goals to our two to take a five-pointlead into half time. In the third quarter the Bears playedgreat defensive football to nullify our time with the wind, while managing to outscore us against the breeze. In thefinal term there was the potential for the score to blow out,but to their credit the South boys kept battling. The Basinhad seven to our six shots on goal but were more accurateeventually winning by a straight four goals. Fortunatelyboth teams survive for another day as the Seniors take onSilvan again and the Reserves play The Basin to win theright to play in the Grand <strong>Finals</strong>. Good Luck today andgive it all you’ve got! Presentation Night tickets are nowavailable for sale. It’s on September 28h at The MulgraveCountry Club, see Jo or D Mac for your tickets, $45 asingle, $80 a Couple! GO SOUTH!!!!SURREY PARK: Not available at time of print.THE BASIN: Great weekend for the club with bothRessies and Seniors recording good wins. The two’sstarted off the weekend at Boronia and had a great winagainst Nunawading. The guys played some excellentfootball and won by over six goals. Great games by Belly,Haz, Screech and Pratty. The boys have a big challengein this week’s prelim against South Belgrave and canhopefully turn the tables on their previous meetings andplay themselves into another GF. The Seniors playedSunday and have booked themselves a place in the bigdance. Great effort by Mick and his assistants to getthe boys into our first grand final in many years. Theboys started the game off slow, but after settling, theyplayed great team footy and continued to follow coachinstructions right until the end of the game. Good gamesby Maxxy Kruger, Big Will Gayfer, Trev Mills, BrentGallichio and Daniel Den Braber. Half the job is done,we now look to next Sunday to complete the job at hand.Well done guys! We will be holding a GRAND FINALBREAKFAST at Batterham Park on Sunday 16 starting at8.30am. Price will be $30.00 which will get you breakfastand a bus trip to and from Mitcham to see the big game.Spots for the bus will be limited, so contact Brett Howlettand book yourself in for what will be a great day offootball. Don’t forget presentation night, 21/9, see JoshWilson or Gary Rule for your bookings. All bookingsmust be paid for by 13/9. Don’t miss out. Good luck toKiller and the ressies today, put in a big effort and let’s gettwo sides in the for the big one! GO BEARS…DIVISION 453 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2012
