RENNIE GILCHRIST:By Ben Waterworth (Twitter: @bjwaterworth)Captaining an EFL Division 1 sideis no simple or tranquil task.Lead by example, lead by voice, lead by discipline – all whileplaying at the highest level.Tough gig.It is why club coaches and committees often turn tomore experienced campaigners, with hundreds ofgames under their belts, to lead their troops onto thefield of battle. But not the Balwyn Football Club.At the age of 23 and with 49 EFL games to his name,Rennie Gilchrist is currently the youngest skipper ofany senior team in Division 1.And when you chat to the man himself, it istransparent to see why he was thrown into the deepchasm so quickly.Despite the challenge and supposed aura of the role, the impressive young Tiger thrives on the captaincychallenge.‘I’ve always thought of myself as a leader in any partof life,’ Gilchrist said.‘Being the sole focus of a leadership group issomething I’ve had to adapt to, but it’s somethingI’m really enjoying.’Balwyn coach Daniel Donati arrived at Cherry Roadlate last year. One of his first tasks was to assign a captain to thesenior side.It did not take him long to decide.‘Two weeks into the job, I knew Rennie was theman,’ Donati said.‘I pulled him aside in December and asked him ifbeing captain was something he wanted to do.‘He told me he’d love to do it and it would help hisfootball, so he said all the right things.’Contrary to other captain appointments, Donati saysGilchrist’s youthfulness was a major reason why hewas chosen.‘I’m all for young leaders and Rennie can help be theglue that keeps this playing group together for thenext five to 10 years,’ Donati said.‘He’s such an influential person amongst the groupand is good mates with everyone.‘He’s a mature and impressive young kid, perhapsthe most competitive 23-year-old footballer I’ve everseen.‘He commands the respect of the players and leadsby example because he trains so hard.’However, without being arrogant, Gilchrist honestlywww.efl.org.au8believes the Balwyn captaincyhas been ‘quite an easy role’ tofit in to.‘There are such a great bunch ofsenior blokes around me who giveme great support,’ he said.‘Ryan McMahon, Stevie Kenna,Rod Crowe, Ben Harris, there’salso a good bunch of youngleaders coming through.’However Gilchrist says vice-captain, and best mate,Charlie Hendrie, has given him invaluable assistanceduring his debut skipper season.‘Charlie’s been like a co-captain for me,’ he said.‘Whenever I need a break, he is always there to helpme out.’Hendrie was ‘wrapt’ for his best mate when the latterwas named captain during the pre-season.He says Gilchrist has been a pleasure to play andtrain under ever since the appointment.‘Rennie is a guy who leads by his actions, rather thaninspiration,’ Hendrie said.‘He really wears his heart on his sleeve, almost to thepoint where he gets white line fever.‘He’s well balanced, runs hard and has got thatcompetitive edge that he carries into a game.’Gilchrist admits leading such a prestigious playinggroup keeps him ‘on his toes’.‘It’s a massive challenge,’ he said.‘You’re always wanting to be leading from thefront, whether it’s getting the old blokes excitedfor training on a wet Tuesday night, or keeping theyounger guys calm on game day.‘But it’s all good fun and I’m really enjoying it.’While Gilchrist admits his aerobic capacity is a hugeadvantage, he believes his ability to know where torun is just as important.‘Everyone talks about gut running, but smartrunning is one of my biggeststrengths,’ he said.‘I also get some great blocksfrom my teammates, whichalways helps.’On the field, Gilchrist is acoach’s dream. He is tough, relentless, ferocious, tenacious, fit andhard-working.However, the hard side ofGilchrist is nowhere to beseen off the footy field.
A LEADER BEYOND HIS YEARSJust ask close friend Hendrie.‘Rennie’s actually quite a gentle bloke,’ he said.‘He’s doing his study to become a teacher and got agreat head on his shoulders.’Gilchrist was a big reason why the Tigers advancedthrough to the Division 1 ‘Choose Tap’ First Semi-Final against Scoresby. The skipper led from the front in the midfield lastweekend, guiding his team to a 37-point victory overNoble Park.Donati says his skipper has been an outstandingleader and contributor all season.‘Finals games are when you win your reputation –and Rennie won his on Sunday,’ he said.‘Rennie was enormous in the last quarter and got usup and going with his voice.‘He just didn’t stop running all day and the taggersdidn’t worry him.’Going into last weekend’s match, the Bulls hadbeaten the Tigers on the past three occasions. But Gilchrist says his troops had really setthemselves for the big occasion and were able todeliver on the big stage.‘All our cards fell into place and we were able toexecute our game plan,’ he said.‘In those third and final quarters, we dug deep and itall just clicked.’Gilchrist is looking forward to playing againstScoresby and lining up on opposite skipper AdamParker.Parker is the second-youngest Division 1 captain atthe age of 24.‘I don’t know Adam very well personally, but Ialways have a good chat to him after a game,’Gilchrist said.‘He’s an absolute star and can singlehandedly win histeam a game.’Balwyn and Scoresby have met twice in 2012, withthe ledger sitting at 1-1 after both team’s securedvictories at their respective home grounds.Gilchrist says his team will go into Sunday’s matchat a neutral venue with confidence.‘One of our best mental strengths is the self-belief inour group,’ he said.‘If games are tight and we’re in a clutch situation, weknow we can stand up.‘Our performance against Noble Park will hold us ingood stead.’The only elephant in the room surrounding Gilchristis his unique first name.Rennie – how did he manage to score a name likethat?‘It was my Mum’s Grandfather’s name, given to himfrom his mother’s maiden name,’ he said.‘So it’s my great, great grandmother’s maiden name.’Surely no one else in the world would be calledRennie?Surely?‘Actually I once met a Canadian girl who has abrother called Rennie.’Well, you learn something new every day.And of course there have been plenty of jokes andcomparisons to his namesake Adam – arguably thegreatest wicketkeeper-batsman in cricket history.‘Plenty, especially when I was younger,’ he laughed.Ironically, Rennie opened the batting and keptwickets as a junior cricketer. However it is has never been the midfielder’s uniquename that has turned the heads of his teammates, supporters or opponents on the field. It has always been his skill with the footy, histenacity at the contest, his professionalism on thefield and his discipline off it.That is why people take note of Rennie Gilchrist –the youngest Division 1 captain in the EFL.One day, he might be the oldest.9 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2012
