INSIDE THE EFLCOMMUNITY FOOTBALL WEEKENDWelcome to Community Football Weekend in the EasternFootball League. As part of the 150 Years of AustralianFootball celebrations, no AFL matches have been fixtured forthis weekend, giving all football supporters the opportunity toreturn to local footy and celebrate its integral role in thecommunity. Not only will a number of former EFL, now AFL,players be returning to their original clubs, but players from all16 AFL clubs will be heading to a local game to participate inCommunity Football round celebrations.Across the EFL this weekend, a number of clubs have plannedspecial events to celebrate 150 years of football, as well astaking the opportunity to honor people around their footballclubs that have played their part in the history of their clubover the years.Prior to the season start, I headed around to a number of localEFL clubs to interview people that have played their part in thehistory of football in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne (whichcan be seen each week on page 3 of the Eastern Footballer).Firstly, it was an honour and a privilege to chat to these peopleabout their background and experiences involved in football inthe outer east. Their tales really opened my eyes to the wayfootball has changed over the years, but at the same time howthe ‘bricks and mortar’ of football clubs remain relativelyunchanged. All the people we interviewed talked about thefriendships gained out of football, and when they reflected onstories of the past – it was like it was just yesterday that theseevents took place. One thing I noticed during the interviews was the way thesevarious people are revered and spoken about around theirfootball clubs. This really shows the impact individuals canhave around a club over the years. The key to each of thesepeople is not only have they played football and had animpact on the field, but off the field as well they have playedvarious roles. Whether it was by joining the committee, being part of the past players group or simply supporting theclub on a week to week basis on the sidelines, what was clearis that these people all have put something back into theclubs that have been such a big part of their lives. Footballhas provided them with many friendships, stories andmemorable events that have occurred in their lives, and theyare more than happy to repay the favour to their clubs. Many of the people we chatted to have their names up onhonour boards within their football clubs, but how many clubpeople know their stories, background and the tales they haveto tell? Hopefully over the coming weeks via our profiles inthe record, people will discover a little bit more about some ofthe characters and people around the EFL.Turning our attention back to the role clubs in the easternsuburbs have played influencing Australian Rules football, Ithink 150 Years Ambassador Kevin Sheedy summed it uppretty well during the week when he said “CommunityFootball Weekend will be a great opportunity for players tosay thank you to the clubs that launched their careers; no AFLplayer would be in the position they are in without theircommunity footy club.”Community Football Weekend is a chance to celebrateAustralian Rules football – whether you are part of the medialike myself, a coach, player, team official, club volunteer, family member or simply a supporter – take a few minutes tothink about the impact football has had on your life over theyears, and celebrate the game we are all apart of.Anthony StangutsEFL Media ManagerBelow is list of players who will attend EFL Matches aspart of Community Football Weekend:Balwyn v Noble ParkBlackburn v CroydonEast Burwood v NorwoodEastern Lions vs Sth BelgraveHeathmont v KilsythKnox v ScoresbyMitcham v ColdstreamRingwood v MulgraveSouth Croydon v BayswaterWarrandyte v TemplestoweStephen Milne,Adam RamanauskasMatthew BateAndrew CarrazzoHeath ScotlandAdam PattisonLuke van RheenanJason SaddingtonKane JohnsonCyril Rioli, Travis TuckEddie Betts*Please note appearances are subject to change.THE EASTERN FOOTBALLERTHE OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUEMay 10th, 2008 Price: $2.00 (inc. Check your policy! To celebrate 150 years of Australian Rules football, in future editions of the Eastern Footballer we are going to profile a numberof people who have played their part in football in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.Name: Roger O’BrienClub: CroydonHow did you get involved atCroydon?: I started with Croydon in1948, starting in the reserves. Therewas under 16’s then, but as I wasworking and they decided I was a man,I started with the reserves till about1951 and 52 when I started to get aregular game in the seniors. From then on I played in theseniors right up until about 1970, when I became playingcoach of the reserves for four years. I had a spell for a year, then came back as a non playing coach. When I came backthe second time as a non playing coach, I had learnt a lotfrom when I was a playing coach. We finished up in thefinals for the next four years, and played off in one losinggrand final. I had played right through to 1978, and was 44when I finished playing my last game in the reserves.Has football had an influence on your family?: In thosedays, football and cricket were the sports. I had a youngerbrother Patty, so we decided we would come down andhave a game at Croydon because it was the local club. Wewere born and bred in the bush in far north New SouthWales and dad played football and aussie rules, one onSaturday and one on the Sunday, plus he was a good boxerand good foot runner. He always taught us kids that numberone is to play football, number two is to learn how to box,and number three is to be a runner. His idea was footballwas Australian rules for real Australians, boxing was tolook after your family and to look after yourself, and if youcan’t fight, and you can’t play football at least you can run.My father was a big influence, and my mother was mybrother and my number one supporter. How do you keep involved with Croydon?: Dot my wifehas also been a big influence, she is still supportingCroydon every week, home and away she loves herfootball. She was a big support to me when I was playing, then we had a son Chris, who played, and she supportedhim as well. We still go to the footy every week. A havejust retired from being the president of the clubs pastplayers – I was president for 33 years, but I am stillinvolved. What do you get out of being involved in a footballclub?: Enjoyment and seeing the young players come on.Especially when you see under 18’s come up, and to seethem develop into to good footballers. What changes have you seen to football in the easternsuburbs of Melbourne?: The pace, plus the old biffo has allgone and a lot of the players in my day would not have lasted onthe ground five minutes. It has cleaned up a lot now, and is a lotfaster. What are your fondest football memories?: My first game inthe seniors. Going back I think about blokes like Les Styles,Keith Cook, Lenny Roberts and some of the older players whoare 10- 15 years older than me. We would follow them everySaturday, and to be able to saddle up with them in the same teamit was a big thrill. Naturally my first senior premiership in 1960was a big thrill. Also in 2006, and being honored as first ruck inthe centenary team, which I was proud of with the manyfootballers that have gone through the club, and so to be pick inthe side was a thrill.Who are the best players you have seen?: For Croydon BobKelsy, he played with Port Melbourne and Carlton. GeoffMcGiven played here, then went to Melbourne and won a bestand fairest and premiership there. Little Johnny Rich, whoplayed half forward flank. My brother Patty who was one of thebest centre half forwards going around. Even today there are alot of good kids coming through like the Grant brothers, youngLuke Barker, and of course Matthew Bate who is at Melbournecame through the ranks at Croydon. Some of the oppositionplayers were Doug Weekes at Kilsyth, and we grew up togetherat Croydon, but he went to Kilsyth. Donny McDonald from EastRingwood, Jimmy Cusack at Vermont, they were all goodruckmen.Which are some of the best sides you have seen going aroundin the eastern suburbs?: I would have to say two really stickout. East Burwood in the 60’s. One player I didn’t mentionbefore was Alan Shaw, who was a good mate of mine. They wonfour or five premierships in the 60’s, and then were successfulin the 70’s and 80’s. And then Vermont over recent years, arevery, very hard to beat. At Croydon, just after the second worldwar, Croydon won three flags. We worked out in 20 years wemissed out on the finals four times, and we only won three flags,so Croydon had a good run in those earlier years. Why would you recommend to someone to get involved in afootball club?: I think it is good for kids to join a club and keepthem involved community wise. That is why I think councilsand government need to be more aware of what football clubs, and other sporting bodies, do for the community. Sport is a goodleveler, and teaches kids to be mates, to look after one another. Then you have the other side with the family and the supporterswho also keep the clubs going.2 www.efl.org.auTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2008 3

6 www.efl.org.auLast weeks winner: Michael RaineyMAGPIES PREVAILMany predicted leading into round three of the 2008 EFLdivision one season that the heavyweight clash betweenVermont and Balwyn would be the standout Matchof the Round. But down the road slightly atScoresby, an enthralling contest unfolded betweentwo of the more unheralded division one sides thatare starting to make their bigger-named rivals standup and take notice. When Blackburn led Scoresby byforty-two points at quarter-time last Saturday, manythought that the result was a mere formality, but Scoresbydug deep to not only fight out what was a great contest, but overpowered Blackburn down the stretch to keep theirperfect start to the season intact, as SHAUN KELLYreports.Despite Scoresby key forward Jason Heath kicking theopening goal of last Saturday’s encounter, the openingquarter belonged to Blackburn. Coming off a weekwhere they had succumbed to reigning premiersVermont in the final quarter, the Burners weredetermined show the large crowd in attendance their trueintentions for season 2008. At quarter-time, Heath’sgoal was the lone Magpie goal on the scoreboard, andBlackburn had notched up eight unanswered goals totake a forty-two point lead into the first change. TimRasmussen was an immovable object up forward, andhis four-goal first quarter indicated that he was on trackfor a huge day. Robert Petracca was sensational winninghis own ball through the midfield, Matt Tuminello waslocked in an engrossing ruck duel with Magpie big manSteve Finlayson, recruit Allister Parton was dominatingall over the ground, and Kristan Height’s brilliancebegan to show as the quarter came to an end. Many a club would roll over after such a dominantopening quarter display by their opposition, but theresponse of the Scoresby of 2008 showed that big thingsmay be in store for their football club this season. Magpierover Ben McDonald started the ball rolling by kicking anice roving goal inside the first thirty seconds of thequarter to set the tempo, and his team-mates followed suit, responding with an eight-goal quarter of their own to pullwithin six points at half-time. Heath was working hard topresent high up the ground from centre half-forward, MattKrawcyzk and Jarrad Matheson were starting to give theMagpies the ascendancy out of midfield stoppages, andScoresby as a unit generally lifted their work-rate. Theygot a huge boost mid-quarter out of second year seniorplayer Kirby McConnon, who came onto the ground atthe twelve minute mark of the quarter and insertedhimself straight into the action by finding space in theforward line and kicking a goal within a minute of hisentrance to reduce the margin to twenty-four points. Notlong after, McConnon chased down a loose ball on theresidential side of Scoresby Recreation Reserve, whichhad been a black hole for the Magpies throughout theearly stages of the game, and got a kick off under pressurethat squirmed it’s way into the Magpie forward line andthrough for a miraculous Menzwear Direct Goal of theDay. The tall Scoresby forward line was starting tomake their presence felt as well, as Steven Pimmkicked two goals for the quarter and Cody Morrisbegan to haul in crucial contested marks as theMagpies left the field at half-time with their headshigh, and the crowd applauding a fantastic display offootball.Scoresby picked up where they left off in the thirdquarter, booting the first four goals of the term inside theopening ten minutes to make it seven successive goals, and to almost unbelievably open up an eighteen-pointbuffer. Morris was really starting to impose himself onthe contest, with two goals early in the quarter, andyoung Magpie runners Nathan Pope and ThomasStubley solid throughout the midfield. But Blackburnrefused to surrender, and when Petracca and GraemeJohns, who was providing a real forward target for thePanthers, goaled within a minute of each other, theScoresby lead was reduced down to a single kick. Butwhen Rasmussen limped from the ground after landingheavily, and Height was forced from the groundfollowing a red card, Blackburn was left with just one onthe bench. They continued their impressive workrate, though, and when captain Luc Matthews snuck forwardto boot his second goal just inside the time-on period ofthe quarter, the Panthers were back within a point. Itlooked as if the three quarter-time margin would beinside a single kick until Pope swooped on a loose balland kicked a nice running goal to increase the Magpielead to eight points at the final change. With word filtering through from Vermont that the Eagleshad opened up a lead in excess of one hundred pointsduring the third quarter, the eyes and ears of the EasternFootball League turned to Scoresby to see how this match, which was quickly turning into an epic, would pan out.Blackburn struck first through Tuminello, but werequickly answered when Morris kicked his fourth goal forthe Magpies. Chris Wilson, who’s influence wasbecoming greater as the game went on, reduced themargin again to within a kick after goaling for thePanthers, but then Scoresby hit back with four of the nextfive goals to effectively end the game. Two of these goalscame through Heath, who had continued his astonishingwork-rate throughout the game and was eventuallyrewarded with the Knox Tavern Player of the Day awardfor his dominating performance. Blackburn hit back withlate goals to Petracca and Michael Prendergast to againreduce the margin to single figures, but the Magpies heldresolute, and goals to Goddard and Morris (his fifth) gaveScoresby their fifteen point victory in what turned out tobe the Match of the Round after all, and a solid platformfor Scoresby to launch an assault on the finals berth thatso narrowly eluded them in 2007.THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2008 7

10 www.efl.org.auFALCONS FLY TO FIRST WINLilydale opened their account for season 2008 last weekendwith a 117 point defeat of Donvale. The win gave newcoach Justin Charles his first as senior coach, andproved to his side that they are capable of playingfour quarters of football. In the opening two rounds of the season, Lilydalehave been well in contention at three quarter time, trailing Scoresby by 14 points in round one, and trailingCroydon on Anzac day by 12 points. The final terms havehurt them and saw them searching for their first win of theseason going into round three. “Over the last two weeks wehave put three good quarters of football together, and thisweek we finally put four together so it was a great relief,”Charles said.Against Donvale the new tall forwardline structure for theFalcons paid dividends, with Marcus Kenny (8 goals) andAndrew Walsh (7) both being key targets, along with OwenMillwood (2). “I did a fair bit of research on Lilydale pastseasons and to win finals football, you need to have bigforwards as not always in finals football are you able tokick it to your forwards how you would like to so you haveto be able to get it down there in the air under pressure andcreate opportunities to score.”The tall forward line has had its critics in the early roundsof the season, but Charles believes it was not the reason forthe first two defeats of the year. “We have copped someflack for being perceived as too top heavy but I believewhat has exposed us at times has been some poor useof the football. When we use the football correctly,we really stretch sides. At times we are not alwaysgoing to go with three talls, we have some handysmall forwards that are good over head as well so Ibelieve we have a lot of versatility, but we have to learn toplay a big structure to win later in the year, and if we getexposed, we can change things,” Charles said.Charles is enjoying his time in the Eastern Football League, and has this year brought across former Richmondteammate – and Vermont and East Burwood player – DavidBourke as his assistant coach. “I had several opportunitiesto coach this year, and Lilydale we by far the pick of thebunch in terms of they were a division one club, they werefinalists without having won a finals match, so I believedthe scope was there. They are a young list, and I believethe scope for improvement has to come from the homegrown talent. They are a great club that love to sticktogether and are very tight. A lot of clubs would kill to havethat off the field and it really come across during tightgames on the field as well,” Charles said.Lilydale this week host East Ringwood who also won theirfirst game of the season last week against Noble Park.ROOS FIND FIRST WINEast Ringwood avoided what could have been a disastrous0-3 start to the season last week, when they recorded theirfirst win for the season – at the same time inflictingNoble Park’s first defeat for the year - last Sunday atEast Ringwood reserve. In a highly entertainingencounter, East Ringwood was able to keep just aheadof the Bulls for the entire contest to run out 13 pointwinners. The early match ups set the scene for this division onecontest, with Noble Park starting with Daniel Rigg, LloydWilliams and Adrian Little on the East Ringwood keyforward options of Luke Vogels, Brendan Holowiuk andWade Porter, whilst East Ringwood assign Daniel Sheers,Cam Taylor and Chris Gooley to Heath Black, DavidVelardo and Kain Baskaya. In an interesting move, GaryConyers - on permit from Box Hill Hawks - was assignedthe role of minding Bulls coach Kris Barlow who started inthe Noble Park forward line. The pace was fast early in the game, with Noble Parkstriking first through Velardo, before Daniel Young scoredthe quick reply down the other end. Whilst new Bull recruitAndrew Gilbert was winning the centre ruck battle againstnew Roo Phil Wischmann, East Ringwood were makingthe most of the centre clearances. Both teams traded goals in the first term, the differencebeing East Ringwood’s ability to find targets up forward, and the Roos led by one point at quarter time.East Ringwood extended their lead to seven pointsat half time, but in the third quarter were able to getthe margin out to 13 points heading into the finalterm. The last quarter saw East Ringwood hold ontothe same margin to record their first win for the year.East Ringwood had started with a very tall forward line, with new recruit Tim Mohr, on permit from Box Hill, alsostarting deep in the forward line, with Bulls captainDaniel Donati keeping him in check. Despite the tallforward structure it was the smaller East Ringwoodforwards that had an impact on the game, with Young andBrodie Lomas both kicking three goals each, along withHolowiuk who kicked three to take his season tally to 11.Velardo continued his good opening to the season withfour goals for Noble Park, taking him to 14 goals afterthree rounds.East Ringwood will this week take a trip downMaroondah Hwy to Lilydale, who also recorded their firstwin for the season last week. Noble Park will travel toBalwyn, with both teams coming off their firsts defeatsfor the year.THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2008 11

In the last threeseasons, Croydon have been triumphant overthe Rams at home, and despite only winningby a mere one and eleven points in the two 2007clashes, the Blues held a comfortable lead after adominant second quarter as ALANA HUGHESreports.East Burwood sported their light blue “clash”jumpers on their journey to Croydon oval, hoping tobring them more luck than they did in round two in adevastating 19 goal loss to Balwyn. Croydon wereeager to start a winning streak after grabbing the fourpoints in a great tussle with rivals Lilydale in anANZAC Day match the previous week.East Burwood came out firing with a snap to theforward line from midfielder Marcus Carroll, whofollowed the ball up forward and snagged a goal inthe first 30 seconds, providing his team with a boostof confidence. A follow up goal less than two minuteslater, put the second six points on the board for thevisiting side. However, the next 15 minutes of playwere all Croydon, with three consecutive goals fromround two leading goal-kicker Luke Barker, including one where he baulked around the man onthe mark and proceeded to kick a goal from forty out.Good roving from both sides presented severalforward opportunities, yet strong backlines stoppedthe score-line from escalating too high. Late in thefirst term, Rams player Bradley Jones was carted offthe ground on a stretcher after an unfortunate landingfrom a grab and did not return to the oval for theremainder of the match. Another goal from Carrollevened up the margin, but a responding late snapfrom Coburg released Rhett Jordan placed Croydoninto the first break with a seven point lead. The Rams won the first bounce and provided themwith another opportunity within the first minute, however, the miss opened up prospects for Croydonwho dominated the quarter with eight scoringopportunities to two points. On-baller Adam Coshamand wingman Andrew Hughes created solid, fastpaced drive through the centre for the Blues andpresented their forwards with numerous chances; theRams’ forward line seeing very limited ball time.Chris Grant was unstoppable at the tip of the back50metre arc, the skipper taking a sensational onehanded grab and booting the ball back towards theCroydon goals. Some fantastic individual goals forthe Blues plus another one added to Barker’s pilegave the Rams quite a scare, and Croydon looked likethey were ready to run away with the match, leading into the major break by over sixgoals.Although East Burwood managed to be firstto handle the ball in the forward line, a strongCroydon backline rebounded the ball within seconds. The Blues again proved too good, with the majorpercentage of ball time in the first half of the term, however Box Hill released Stuart Hill put forth asturdy performance through the centre in an attemptto lift East Burwood from what was looking tobecome a repeat of the previous week. MidfielderRyan Clarke’s clean disposals assisted the Rams asthey managed to bag the last three goals of thequarter, bringing the margin to 31 points in the hometeams favour going into three quarter time. With fivepoints and only two goals, the Blues’ off-centrekicking was to blame, and fantastic third term by EastBurwood gave the impression they were back in thegame. In typical East Burwood fashion, they came out firingin the last quarter and provided forward Damien Yzewith a chance to kick start the score in the firstminute, however, a miss resulted in a response byCroydon back-man Tim Cook who snagged the Bluesan early goal to maintain their lead. With straightkicking an issue for Croydon, the next goal wasn’tseen until the twenty minute mark, another onefollowing soon after. Even though the Rams managedto bag the last goal for the match, the Bluescontrolled a flooded forward line well, and held asolid seven goal victory.Andrew Hughes had a stellar performance throughthe midfield and was a huge contributor to themovement of the ball down forward. Luke Barkerbagging another five goals for the day puts him asequal leading goal kicker in the EFL after anothersolid game. Grant was strong on the backline andCosham provided heavy drive.Rams back-man Adam Coghlan had a tough job onBarker, but at times was too strong and spoilednumerous goal opportunities for the Blues. RyanClarke was tough through the midfield, and fed wellfrom a solid performance of ruckman BenjaminMiller. Despite a handful of good players, Croydonwere too dominant for East Burwood and with acomfortable win under the belt, they look forward tothe clash against Blackburn this week which if won, would place them well in the top five.12 www.efl.org.auTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2008 13

BALWYNLast week there were mixed results for the Balwyn Footballclub. The seniors had a very disappointing loss whilst theseconds were able to make amends beating Vermont at theirhome track. Go Blues!!!DONVALEToday the acid test is put upon all 3 sides as we take on thepowerful Vermont. The young senior side will be relishing thechance to take on the best and we are expecting a spiritedcontest. Further improvement was evident last week againstLilydale when we were well in the hunt at half time only tolapse in our intensity in the third quarter. We proved toourselves that we can play good footy and we needimprovement in all facets of our play as we strive to becomea much more competitive side. Lilydale massive heightadvantage was telling and their players were fitter and ran outthe game well. The reserves lost in a thriller after looking goneat half time. The return of a few senior footballers and thecontinued improvement and belief in each other means that awin for this side is not far away. Simon O’Brien continued hisgood form and Byron marsh chimed in with 5 goals. The coltshad a disappointing loss to a more committed and hardrunning Lilydale. Even though we were still in with a chance at3 quarter time the signs were not good and Lilydale ran awaywith the game in the last. Josh bell and Morgan lane triedvaliantly all day. On the social side we have our gala ball at theVeneto club on 5th July. Details will be released soon on ourweb site. EAST BURWOODCongratulations to Croydon on their fine win last week theyplayed a more constructed game and were much better inthe clearances than us, which gave their forwards a betteravenue to goal. Our Reserves had another good win. Thescoreline was close at half time, in the Third quarter theboy’s were challenged but came away in the last quarter toremain undefeated. The Colts also recorded another goodwin and are improving each week, Thanks to Adam Lenarcicfor filling in as Coach. This week we host Norwood whohave come up against some tough opposition in theiropening 3 rounds, the Rams are hoping to break the ice, itshould be a great contest, good luck to both teams. After 3 losses last week, all teams were able toturn it around on Sunday and deliver 3 solid wins. The Coltsfound some belief and after trailing by 14 points at the mainbreak, slammed on 12 goals to 6 in the second half toovercome the previously unbeaten Bulls by 21 points in aterrific morale booster. The Ressies turned up to play andrecorded a convincing 42 point victory in a very physicalgame. The Seniors were desperate to get on the winners listand rose to the big challenge of the undefeated Bullsmanaging to win by 13 points despite first-quarter injuriesto two important on-ballers and the later injuries to 2 keyforwards which left us with 17 fit men for the last term. Thiswas a courageous victory as we found the passion and voicethat had been missing over the first two weeks. Today, weventure to Lilydale for three matches which we know will betough and, as always, hard-fought. Don't forget theRETRAVISION RINGWOOD Evening on Wednesday, May 28for great bargains between 6pm and 9:30. The first FunEvent for the season will be on May 24 after the Knox Gameand features an 80'S Theme. This one is compulsory for allplayers, and supporters are also most welcome. See Hedgeyfor details. Go Roos!LILYDALELast weekend it was great to record a “clean sweep” atDonvale, a ground that has not always shown the Dales attheir best. The Colts made it two in a row, with a strong win.The highlight was the discipline shown – in terms of carryingout the game plan; and in respecting the umpires’ decisions. In a very even performance, where we had winners acrosseach line, Matt Lawrence had a big day. The Reserves againstarted strongly and were 25 points ahead at the final break, despite some bad disposal. Fortunately they were able to holdoff a fast finishing Donvale and record a much deserved 9point win. Daniel McGrady, playing his first match for the year, led from the front. He was everywhere and used his hardnessand pace to win the ball consistently and put his team toadvantage. Great job first up. In the Seniors match the Dalesneeded to execute their game plan for 4 quarters. That isexactly what they did. After a solid start and handy half-timelead, they cracked the game wide open in the second half -scoring 18 goals to 3. Our “talls” in the forward half wereobvious targets for a dominant mid field brigade. Big AndrewWalsh engineered himself into dangerous positions close togoals and marked everything that came his way. A bag of 7goals was a great reward for his efforts, clearly his biggestbag for the Club. Today against East Ringwood, in theCommunity Footy round, we should have 3 very entertaininggames. Go Dales. The off-field team have been very active –so mark your diaries for the coming events. The Super Raffledraw (some tickets still available) on May 17; Theme Nighton May 31; and the big one – the 2008 Ball on June 14. Keepwatching the Web, the Flanker and this space for moreinformation. After the game today, come and check outSimmo’s new bar; the weekly awards and the Player Auctionstandings.KNOXConsecutive wins by all three teams against quality oppositionin Norwood continues our excellent form in first division.Colts - Our first big test this season against a side who willdefinitely be in the make up come finals time. It was a closefought contest all day with the margin no bigger than 19points either way. We established this 19 point lead athalftime and had plans to extend on this in the third quarterbut to Norwood's credit they came out firing and taking thelead by three quarter time. The expectations that were placedon the players for the last quarter were to be more intense atthe contest and they did this which resulted in us taking thepoints by two goals in a very entertaining colts game. BestPlayers - Harris, Fitzy, Bolts, Canning. Reserves - Wanted toback up their win from last week and after a tight first quarterthen started to grow in confidence and some excellentfootball, we were able to increase our lead every quartereventually wining by a significant margin. One of the pleasingthings from our reserves side is that there is such a goodspread of players putting their hand up and playing well. BestPlayers - Rowdy, Brent, Pilch & Saundo. Seniors - As weexpected a tough game all day very similar to the colts withNorwood first establishing a lead and then we came back andfought hard to win it back. It was close all day but with ourability to continue to run all day we were able to eventuallywin by 4 goals. Best Players - Randle, Appsy, Simmo, &Tredders. We are now poised for an enormous game for allteams this week against local derby side Scoresby, we mustcontinue this brand of footy we are playing to ensure we cancontinue our excellent start to the season. Check the websitefor upcoming social events.NOBLE PARKA disappointing day last Sunday with loses to all three teams.Today we face our old rivals Balwyn and today we need to getthree wins back on the board so to all supporters let’s cheerhard and let’s show our support for all three teams. To showyour support for the Bulls we need supporters to put theirhands up to be interchange stewards, umpire escorts, goalumpires (colts), water carriers, people to man the gate (homegames) and so on. If you want to show your support, go andspeak to a committee person or a team manager NOW. Wehave a few tickets left for the upcoming BULLS 100 draw –see Helen Hughes for you ticket. Ladies day is on the 31st ofMay - $35 is the cost which gets you lunch and drinks for 2hours and afternoon tea, please see Tracey Walden to bookyour spot. Go BULLS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NORWOODLast week we welcomed a past adversary, the Knox footballclub, with the promise of a close contest in all three grades. The colts were shown the fact that straight kicking makes iteasier to win games of football but the early risers who cameto give their support were shown that Shep and his boysshould have realistic expectations of taking part in the finalsthis season. It was in the end a 12 point win to Knox with thebetter players being Tom French, Daniel Hurley and TylerArrowsmith. The major goalkickers were Kit Moody with 3and T Arrowsmith and D Poynton added 2 each of their own.A 64 point defeat in the reserves speaks for itself and thedesired wins will only come from the players themselves andwe hope the first win will come soon, better players JesseNewman, Luke Chaplin and Daniel Furmston, goals werekicked by S Hunt, R Cornwall and J Quirk. The result of theseniors was still in the balance late in the last quarter and itwas only through 3 goals in the red zone which cemented avictory for the Knox team. We had a better effort from allplayers in comparison to the previous 2 weeks but the namedbetter players were Simon Godfrey, Michael Witkowski, JackHill and Ryan Walkenhorst. The major goalkickers were BEnglish, J Spurrell, R Kueffer and L Hyatt who all added 2goals a piece. SOCIAL: A fantastic night was had by all whoattended the Uniform Night last week. The events that arecoming up include the Past players and Officials day (17thMay) and the Masquerade Ball (21st June) so keep an eye outfor details around the clubrooms. This week we travel to thevenue of a Norwood red letter day in our history, the 1999premiership, where we will take on the East Burwood Ramsin what needs to be a significant day in our future. GoWoodies.SCORESBYToday, against our near neighbour Knox, is our big chance toreally put our early season stamp on the upper reaches of theFirst Division ladder. Last week we clearly left our footy at homeand watched while Blackburn relentlessly opened up our defenceand kick 8 goals in the first quarter while the other Goal Umpirewas not really stretched by our one. However, Kris’s roasting sawalmost the direct opposite with a second quarter outcome of 8goals to 2 our way taking us in at the long break only one goaldown. We hit the front in the third quarter with successful forward50 forays and hit the final break with an eight point lead on whichto launch the final quarter battle. However, telling marks in attackto Cody Morris and Jason Heath and pressure all around theground led to goals which saw us through to what was finally astrong 15 point win. Morris, Heath and Pimm led the goal scorerswith Nathan Pope again amongst our best together with Goddard,Chadders, Heath, Pimm, Morris, Kirby and Major. Finally, manythanks to our VFL guys for making themselves available for theBlack and White recently. The Twos started off playing catch upfooty and found the pace from a well disciplined Blackburn justtoo hot. Our goals were spread around while Law, Bainbridge,Steenie, Junior and Tony Vanin were among our betters. ChrisToth decided to keep the Colts in the game from the start almoston his own against Blackburn in yet another high risk start. Webroke the game open in the last by matching Blackburn’s 5 goalswith their last use of the wind to clinch a hard fought win. TomAhon’s and Minna’s 3 goals each left the remainder spread aroundand Nick Richards, Tothie, Scottie, Mitch Dole, Hicksie and ReeceMcNamara were among our best. But our slow starts are startingto demand particular focus.VERMONTWhat a huge weekend highlighted by the Senior victory overBalwyn and the announcement of our new Principal Sponsor inLAZAWAY Pools & Spas. We look forward to a great associationwith Craig Wright and Lazaway. The Senior game was not quitewhat we expected and obviously the huge margin is not thedifference between the two teams. Nevertheless, congratulationsto David Banfield and the players for an outstanding effort. TheCraig Coghlan Pewter went to Kris Bardon from Ryan Mullett,Bernie Dinneen, Matt Greig, Dan Papillo and everyone else. Theinjury to Ryan Cassidy was devastating to all and we wish himwell for a speedy return. The Reserves game was a terrific contestall day and our boys failed to nail some vital scoring chances latein the game and paid the price. The Perry Fletcher Pewter waswon by Jamie Rushton from James McClure, Daniel Mendes,Michael Dell’Aquilla, Fabian Dorbolo. The Colts unfortunately hada very easy day and did what ever they wanted. The Bob BeardPewter went to Jacob Huisman from Cam Dore, JarrodMacdonald and Travis Bird. The Vets had a 2 goal win at Kilsythand will need two weeks to recover from their first outing. Bestplayers were John Verde, Brett Phillips, Peter Bolanis, PaulDouglas. Cameron Bain. Well done boys. Next game is at Vermonton the 18th May. They need some off field help. Ring Paul Clearif you would like to be involved 0408911927. The Travel BonanzaTickets are out and about. See Brian Power or Bob Beard. ThePlayers Auction was another bid success and thanks to guestAuctioneer Garry Prigg who was fantastic.16 www.efl.org.auDIVISION 1 CLUB NOTESDIVISION 1 CLUB NOTES THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2008 17

These players have taken up coaching roles aswell as being senior players with their respective clubs. They have brought with them various game plans they haveplayed under and adapted them to suit the EFL.We have also introduced umpires from these levels whichhas initiated an increase in professionalism to the EFLumpires. Before the start of the season the Umpires, as a group metwith AFL Umpire Scott McLaren to learn how our AFLcounterparts prepare for a game. From that meeting a newgame plan was introduced. This Game Plan is designed to ensure that the umpires thinkand plan about the teams, their playing styles and keyplayers they will be umpiring on the weekend. The main areas to focus on are:SKILLS:Running, positioning, communication, setting of marks etc.TEAMWORK:Hand over of control, encouragement, communication tofellow umpires etc.UMPIRE GAME PLANS:THE GAME:Think about the sides you are going to umpire, their keyplayers, the styles of play as well the importance of the gameto both sides and the impact of a win or loss to them.MATCH PLAN:How we perceive the game will go and how we will adaptto this such as running wide to position, paying early freesand looking for specific things that may occur on and offthe ball etc.The Game Plan is discussed with the observers at the gamesand feedback sessions during the week.Just as football teams strive for excellence, so do theumpires. Our role is to adjudicate the game and ensure thatit is free flowing and players are not seriously injured whilstplaying. By having the game plan, our focus is not on thegame only when we arrive at the ground, but actually startswhen we receive our appointments during the week.As you enjoy your football by either watching, playing orcoaching our aim is to enjoy it umpiring.Good luck to all umpires running today and may the bestteams win on the day!!UMPIRE SPONSORS 2008Tune in every Thursday night from 10pmfor the EFL segment, when Mark Fine catches up withEFL media manager Anthony Stangutsto take a look the weekends round of matches.UMPIRES NUMBERS 200836 www.efl.org.auTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2008 371B1R2B2R3B3R4B4R5B5R6B6R7B7RA.WheelerS.MasonD.BlomD.KearneyB.MaaskantA.VincitorioW.HillierS.DochertyA.GallA.WaltersJ.NewmanN.RodierN.MacdonaldT.Carlos8B8R9B9R10B10R11B11R12B12R13B13R14B14RB.LingardD.O’ConnellD.DevincentisD.SanfilippoG.CouttsD.ScollaryC.KingmaS.McCormackA.TongG.MaloneP. The Eagles started strongly, and with a four goal tozip first term set up their winning margin for the match.Kilsyth finally got on the board in the second term with threegoals, but Vermont held on to an 18 point lead. The third termonce again belonged to the visitors, but Kilsyth hit back in thefinal quarter kicking four goals to two, but the Eagles wereable to hold on by 12 points.SOUTH CROYDON d NUNAWADINGNunawading are still searching for their first ever VETSvictory after South won their round one encounter by 46points. After an even first half, with only one and two pointsseparating the two sides at the first two breaks, the Doggiesbroke away in the third term. Four goals to one in the thirdquarter set up the win for South Croydon, and they kept theLions to just three points in the final term to run out 46 pointwinners.MOOROOLBARK d NORTH RINGWOODMooroolbark had the best start to their VETS season with ahard fought win over Nth Ringwood in round one. Both sidesgot off to a slow start in the first half, with only four goalsbeing scored, and the home side having a four point lead athalf time. The second half was when the game fired up. TheMustangs kicked six goals to no score in the third term to breakthe game wide open, and ran into the final term with a 37 pointlead. The Saint woke up from the third term fade out to matchthe visitors six goals in the final term, but Mooroolbark wereable to add to their scoreline to record a 13 point win.BAYSWATER dw CHIRNSIDE PARKChirnside Park will be wondering ‘what if’ after they led allday against Bayswater, only to walk away from the game withtwo points. In an entertaining match, Chirnside led by 8 pointsat quarter time, and the margin remained the same at 8 pointsat half time. The third quarter proved effective for the visitorsmoving out to a 14 point lead, but in the final quarterBayswater fought back to hold Chirnside to just one goal, whilst kicking an inaccurate 3 goals 5 behinds of their own totie up the scores, and give both sides two points – which willmake the VETS ladder very interesting throughout the season!VETERANS - 2008Boronia 4.4 7.4 12.4 13.6 (84)Forest Hill 1.0 3.2 3.2 8.3 (51)B Goals: Bennet 6 Bailey 3 Plymin 2 Edwards 1 Collins 1F Goals: Stone 3 Withers 2 Kurtbegovi 1 Wood 1 Tanner 1B Best: Bennet Maisey Vansummeren Bailey Rattray PlyminF Best: Tatnall Withers Mitchell Grigg Stone VoigtKilsyth 0.2 3.4 4.2 8.9 (57)Vermont 4.3 6.4 8.9 10.9 (69)K Goals: McAuley 3 Buckley 1 Ling 1 Stefanutti 1 Christie 1Jolly 1V Goals: Phillips 3 Kyranakis 2 Bain 2 Bolanis 1 Petri 1Reddington 1K Best: McAuley Ling Lamb Wallwork Neil HarmanV Best: Daniel Phillips Douglas Bolanis VerdeSouth Croydon 2.2 5.4 10.6 13.9 (87)Nunawading 2.1 5.2 6.2 6.5 (41)N Goals: Williams 2 Bourbon 2 Shevlin 1 Latorre 1N Best: Shevlin Williams Bourbon Kohldorfer Ciampa HoganNorth Ringwood 0.3 2.6 2.6 8.7 (55)Mooroolbark 1.2 2.2 8.7 10.8 (68)N Goals: Porter 5 Hudson 2 Kandler 1N Best: Moran Thompson Zupanovich Dymond Larsen PorterBayswater 3.0 5.1 7.2 10.7 (67)Chirnside Park 4.2 6.3 9.6 10.7 (67)B Goals: Kruger 4 Ockwell 2 Daley 1 Chapman 1 Heffernan1 Kruger 1B Best: Kruger Kruger Lynch Hurley Gibbs GysbertsVETS LADDERTEAM P W L D B FF For Ag PC PtsSouth Croydon 1 1 0 0 0 0 87 41 212.20 4Boronia 1 1 0 0 0 0 84 51 164.71 4Mooroolbark 1 1 0 0 0 0 68 55 123.64 4Vermont 1 1 0 0 0 0 69 57 121.05 4Bayswater 1 0 0 1 0 0 67 67 100.00 2Chirnside Park 1 0 0 1 0 0 67 67 100.00 2Kilsyth 1 0 1 0 0 0 57 69 82.61 0North Ringwood 1 0 1 0 0 0 55 68 80.88 0Forest Hill 1 0 1 0 0 0 51 84 60.71 0Nunawading 1 0 1 0 0 0 41 87 47.13 0Round 2 Sunday, May 18Boronia vs. Mooroolbark Tormore ReserveNorth Ringwood vs. Kilsyth Quambee ReserveNunawading vs. Forest Hill Nunawading ReserveSouth Croydon vs. Chirnside Park Cheong ParkVermont vs. BayswaterVermont Rec ReserveTHE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2008 39

Still as we all knowthere is a long way to go with many hurdles in front of us.Seniors played extremely well in patches but they know fourquarters wins games and they are more than capable ofachieving the end result. Better players S.Jamieson, D.Grice,S.McKenzie and many others. RESERVES: Keep rolling along, although a sting from Drew was needed to GET THE BALLROLLING. But like the seniors games are only won with all fourquarters being played out to the end, this side has all theattributes to become a very good side and the opportunity toachieve the same result as last year.Better players S.Gawenda,W.McLaughlin R.McNamara, M & D.Stevens, and many othersas games are only won with every one doing their best. COLTS1. A very convincing win but guys you all need to keep focusedand not get sucked in. You are out there to play and enjoy yourfootball, and to test your selves to see if you can become betterplayers and young men, but it was a good win all the same, andnow you come up against last years Premiers where you willneed to stay focused in order to have a good win. Better playersVeness, Duke, S.Johnson, and many others. GO HAWKERSCOLDSTREAMGood effort by the Colts once again. This is clearly a work inprogress and the improvement can been seen as each week goesby. It really isn't far away. Best game so far by the Ressies. Theywere right in it all day. Lack of a bench for most of the secondhalf proved costly and they simply didn't have enough legs atthe finish. Fundamental skill errors and poor decision makingdidn't help either. All in all it was a much better effort and thefinal score did not really reflect the closeness of the contest. TheSeniors got off to a slow start and found themselves 33 pointsin arrears at the first break. It was going to take an extraordinaryeffort to peg this back, the Blues were playing pretty well. Butpeg them back they did. The margin early in the last quarter wasjust two points in favour of the Blues and it was hold onto yourhats, here we go again. However the comeback and lack ofnumbers on the bench had taken too much out of the boys andthe Blues ran out comfortable 33 point winners at the finish.Coincidentally the margin at the end was exactly the same as atquarter time. Good to see the ladies enjoying themselves at theCocktail Day. Lots of colourful drinks were consumed. Not surehow much of the games they saw but I am absolutely certainthere were plenty of sore heads on Sunday. This week we playMitcham at Mitcham, the way this season is panning out so farevery opponent is going to be tough, this will be no exception.Good luck to both Clubs. GO GO COUGARS! The Presidents'donation day will be held on Sat. 31st May, commencing at7.30pm in the Clubrooms. Thank you to our sponsors BendigoBank, Plaster Products and Coldstream Timber.MITCHAMRound 4 against Boronia was not a good day for the Tigers. Thecolts were again outclassed by a better prepared team. TheMitcham boys are slowly improving as they get to know eachother. A lack of pre season and knowledge of each others gameis making it very difficult for the boys. Their efforts have beenfantastic and we hope improvement is just around the corner.Mitcham 4.9.33 to Boronia 27.20.182. The reserves played off ina hard fought match with Boronia. The game was scrappy butvery tight in the first half with a combined total of 7 goals kickedgoing into the main break. Boronia managed to open up thegame in the second half banging on 8 goals to Mitcham’s 2. Bestplayers for the Tigers were A. Dungan, M. Robinson, L. Warne,J. Tay, B. Costigan, M. Robinson, Mitcham 4.4.28 to Boronia13.15.93. The seniors got off to a slow start in their game, butmanaged to keep Boronia to just 2 opening goals. In a hardfought contest the game opened up in the second quarter asLuke Higgins (4) & Brett McIntyre (3) started to take control inthe Mitcham forward line. Going into three qtr time just 3 goalsdown anyone could have won this contest. Unfortunately it wasBoronia that had saved some fuel for a big last quarter. AaronBlundell Cam Taylor & Al Cowan kept the Tigers going until theend but a more experienced Boronia outfit were able to run outwinners by 5 goals. Best players for Mitcham were A. Blundell,C. Taylor, A. Cowan, J. Tymensen, J. Quilty, J. Andreatta,Mitcham 12.14.86 to Boronia 17.14.116. Reminder that theTrivia Night is on Saturday 17th May @ 7.30 Mitcham SocialClub. Theresults show that the club as a whole is heading in the rightdirection, with greater depth than previous years due to theaddition of a number of quality recruits to the club. Some of ourhome grown young players have also taken the next step andare playing a good brand of footy. The Colts started the day offwith a solid 58 point win to remain undefeated. Jeremy Neumannkicked 6 goals while Dean Eliades pitched in with 4. Betterplayers were Maxwell, Kelton, Neumann & Eliades. The Reservesalso remain undefeated after a 48 point win over the Upper Gullyboys. Evans and Ahmet were amongst the goals with 3 each.Best were Trenfield, Hardy, McManus, Head, Bucsuhazy @M.Gale. Gordo has the boys working well as a team but they'llhave to be at their best today against Boronia, who are alsoundefeated. The Seniors got the jump on Upper Gully with a 6goal lead at 1/4 time and were never headed, posting a 43 pointvictory. Mark Duckworth continues to contribute down forwardwith 5 goals while Matt Polkinghorne & Scott Rowe chipped inwith 4 each. Best players were Lee, Wright, Mullett, Wadsworth,Rowe & Lemon. It was great to have Troy Wright back from BoxHill for the day and we hope to see a lot more of him in the green& gold in the future. This week we are at home to Boronia whichshould produce 3 ripper games. We also welcome theMooroolbark & SPJ Auskic clinics who will be entertaining uswith a game. While all the action is taking place on the arena theladies will be enjoying the annual Mothers Day Lunch in theclubrooms. I hope you all have a great day. GO MUSTANGS !!NUNAWADINGAfter the jubilation of two wins for the first time this year inRound 3, last week was a big return to earth. Despite DannyMihran's four goals, the Reserves couldn't match Warrandytefor four quarters, and wound up losing by just ten points. BigJimmy Macrae, Muck and Jammo were all good, but defeattastes the same. Seniors looked like things were going to roll onas per previous weeks at quarter time, but Warrandyte came outto play after the first break and taught us a lesson in playing teamfootball. No excuses, we were beaten by a much better side onthe day, but we will take the hurt of our first loss to heart andstore that for next time we meet the Bloods. great, Pappy kicked another four and A Jones performed well, but it means little in an 86 point defeat. VETS started last weekout at South Croydon, but couldn't get the first points on theboard either. A solid week on the track should have us fired upto take on the Waverley Blues this week - a club with whom weare building quite the rivalry. Pride is a powerful thing - let'sregain some with our performances today. After a beer with theBlues boys after the game, it's back to The Den for a big night ofawards dating back to ANZAC Day. Next Saturday is Ladies Dayduring our home game against Coldstream - see Spider fortickets.TEMPLESTOWEThe Dockers met the Whitehorse Pioneers at home this lastSaturday and for the most part of the first quarter, it looked likethe reserves may have won the day with the majority of the playin our forward fifty. But try as we might, we couldn't break theopposition's defence and convert on the score board. This hasbeen a common problem for us this season. Scoreboardpressure is the ultimate pressure you can apply to theopposition but they seem to roll with it. We can never wingames if we allow seven goals to remain unanswered in a singlequarter, but this is what we did going into the half time break. It was a pretty awful sight to see and the players were rewardedwith a half time ear-bashing. The last half was a great deal morecompetitive with us winning just as much of the boot as thePioneers but again, our forwards were unable to convert on thescoreboard. Our skills are letting us down, loose men, poordisposals, lack of eye for the game, poor onfieldcommunication. Just basic fundamentals that we've forgottenabout or don't know about. Heart-breaking. The Seniors gamewas a much more competitive match but the same can be saidabout the lack of basic fundamentals of football. There weresome fantastic plays around the ground with the onballerspushing the ball towards the forward line but again, we failed toconvert and the day turned out to be push and switch at theforward line. Despite this, it was not all doom and gloom. Wewere able to get our fair share of the football but the Pioneersseemed to have more heart and applied consistent pressurethroughout the game; our players tired in the last quarter andallowed the opposition to seal the game.UPPER FERNTREE GULLYPretty much a roller coaster ride for the supporters so far thisseason! Win Loss Win Loss...well the odds are with us today,at least! Great THF Lunch enjoyed by those able to be there lastweek. TheReserves led from early in the second quarter and held off a latecharge from Nuna to finish with an important away win. Plussizedforward Campbell Holland kicked 4 and first-gamer RobIllingworth 3. Best were T-Rex Largepants (Sponsor:Luke theTiler), Pud-Pud Opteynde (Sponsor:Quick Lift Doors) & Grant"Nickname Required" Godwin (Sponsor:Tenacious T).Supported by a strong Warrandyte contingent, the Seniorsstarted slowly before switching on late in the first and thennever looked back. EASTERN LIONSWith a good week on the training track, the 2s looked totake that form into the contest against Forest Hill. Afteranother slow start, the lads gave the Zebras a 3 goal leadgoing into quarter time. With the Lions kicking with thewind in the second quarter, the managed to peg back themargin by going into the major break by being down bya couple of goals. Paul Franklin was kicking truly whileHayden Rourke was giving the onballers first useopportunity but unfortunately, the Lions couldn't takefull advantage of it. In the 3rd quarter, the boys had theirheads still in the change rooms as Forest Hill kickedaway with 5 goals in literally the first 5 minutes. To thecredit of the 2s, the ended up winning the last quarter 8goals to 4 so hopefully we can take that form into todayagainst South Belgrave. Final score was 17.13-115 toForest Hill 21.7-133. Leigh Rankin led his team out to amatch to savour. It was a goal for goal first quarter withonly points separating both teams at quarter time. TheLions smaller players in Luke Gardiner and ChrisWaldren lit up the second quarter with their blisteringspeed as they were either setting up goals or kickinggoals themselves. The half time message was toconsolidate the lead and the Lions did just that. Withthe backline holding strong and the midfield willing tohelp out, the Lions increased their lead going into thelast quarter. The first few goals to Wayne Van Der Rossand Jamie Preston put the match in the bag for the Lionswith a comfortable win in the end. Eastern Lions 18.12-120 to Forset Hill 11.9-75.FERNTREE GULLYOnce again Ferntree gully fell short by a kick or thereabouts in the seniors, having a good percentage of theplay against Heathmont. Unfortunately not being able tohit targets and convert good passages of play into goalsonce again cost the gully the win. In the twos anotherpoor start to the game left the boys well behind atquarter time, and with an up hill battle that they couldn’tover come. On a positive note the colts started the daywell with an emphatic win over Heathmont, and with acouple of boys to come back in to the side coach johnturner was pleased by the way the boys bounced backafter last week. Thank you to all the ladies that attendedthe Ferntree gully ladies luncheon it was a great day andthank you for your support. Players please remember tofinalize you rego payments this week as today is thedeadline. Finally memberships to the 200 club areavailable through Sam Furno or Chris Rhodeso425826139FOREST HILLWell after a good performance the week prior it was aday of mixed results for the Zebra’s against the EasternLions. The reserves continued the form they discoveredlast week and managed to scrap out a win. While wealways seemed to have the lion’s measure it was closeenough all day to be uncomfortable. However a lot ofpositives to take out the game and more signs that thisteam is hitting there straps. Keep up the work boys as itis critical you get us off to the right start each week. Theseniors on the other hand delivered a mediocreperformance; the Eastern Lions thoroughly deservedthere win and while they were clearly the better team ourshowing was not where it needed to be. This was achance for us to gauge where we are at andunfortunately our performance indicated we are a fairway off and no reflection on the hard work the playersand coaches put in over the pre-season. While thissounds overly critical the reality is all involved know weare capable of much better. Thought Browny summed itup pretty well “we can look as strong as we likeThursday night, but means nothing if we can’t translatethis on match day”. Pretty pivotal and an indication thatall involved know we have the ability to deliver onseasons goals, but actions are what’s needed to achieveresults. At 2 – 2 and part of the chasing pack it does notget any easier, we meet another undefeated side inChirnside Park who have showed they are the team tobeat. The players need to tackle this as another chanceto prove or quality; I know there response will beemphatic!GLEN WAVERLEY HAWKSThirty one points is not nearly good enough if we are tochallenge the top sides in the coming weeks. However awin is a win and at the start of the season anyone downat the club would take the win. Another good game byBeau, Ryan and Wayne and is was great to see Chinnyback to his best after his knee operations (all the hardwork has payed off). Another big challenge today as wetake on The Basin after the big win they had last week. The two just missed there third win for the season in agame that went down to the wire and never much in it forthe whole game, I’m sure they can bounce back todayto keep them in touch with the four. Don’t forget to checkout our website for all the up to date info of what’s goingon around the club. And if you missed it Chris Molnarwas nominated for the Leader under 21 player for thethird round well Mols great work.HEATHMONTWell it was another mixed day for Heathmont, with bothour senior sides recording victories while our 18’s had adisappointing loss against Ferntree Gully. The reservesgot recorder a solid 67 point win with the senior sidejust scrapping in by 4 points to record their 3rd win ofyear to try and consolidate a position in the top 4. The club would like to welcome Adam Pattisonfrom Richmond down today, to help us celebrate 150years of Australian Football. Don’t forget to also catchour junior game at half time during the seniors to alsohelp us celebrate this occasion. There will also be afunction for the big game tonight at the club rooms, starting at 6.30pm, there will be a big screen andhandball competition. Admission is $5.00 so we hope tosee you down there. Our sponsor of the week is JetsetRingwood, 151 Maroondah Highway Ringwood,98706088.KILSYTHIt was ladies day at pinks reserve last week, with over60 wife’s, girlfriends, grandmothers watching the boysrun out. Our reserves continued their superb start to theseason with a well fought out victory. Chirnside Parkchallenged all day, but the side dug deep to eventuallywin by 3 goals. Danny and Bourk’s were the standouts ina great team performance. Chirnside Park’s senior teamproved to be too strong for Kilsyth and steadily increasetheir margin at each change. Jacko continued his goalkicking form but it just wasn’t enough on the day. Thisweek we travel to Heathmont and expect the senior sideto take a leaf out of the reserves winning form.SOUTH BELGRAVELast round we ventured to Glen Waverley, to face theHawks. The day began positively with the colts notchingup another win, which now sees the boys sitting nicelywithin the top 4. There are some fantastic players withinthis side, and I suggest all our members and players getdown to the games early and throw your support behindthem. The reserves managed to string 4 quarterstogether in one match, and as a result were able to geta positive result for the first time this year. It was a greatteam effort all across the ground, and was great to seeLee Bennett back playing, after missing much of the preseason due to injury. Unfortunately, the seniors weren’table to keep up the momentum gathered by the winsearlier in the day. Things just didn’t seem to go our way,and it was always going to be a tough task with Makoout early in the 1st quarter. To the boys credit they nevergave up or took a backwards step, and will be better forthe hit out. With several key players to return in the nextfew weeks, things are looking up. Don’t Forget the Saints& Sinners Night tonight from 7:30 PM at the clubrooms.THE BASINWell done last week to Viv and her many helpers whoput on a very enjoyable and successful sponsorluncheon. Strongwork from the Falcon’s midfield saw the Rangesbackline under tremendous pressure for the majority ofthe quarter. But some inaccurate kicking from theFalcons and excellent defensive pressure by Dale Walker(Chirnside Park) on Adelaide Crow’s listed player,Patrick Dangerfield, kept the Ranges in the game at thefirst break. Josh Brown (Scoresby), Andrew Ellis (TheBasin) and James Crowle (East Ringwood) all helpedensure Ranges were within touch heading into thesecond.Eastern Ranges - 2.2.14 Geelong Falcons - 3.5.23The Ranges midfield took it up a notch in the secondterm, with Matthew Cunningham (Wantirna South),Leigh Kitchin (Wantirna south), Liam Shiels (TheBasin), Rory Sloane (Upwey-Tecoma) and Jayden Cass(Croydon) all finding the football. A free kick to JoshBrown set Cass up for the first goal of the quarter, putting Ranges back within four points. A quicksnapshot by Luke McDonald (Scoresby) put Ranges infront for the first time in the second term. The Rangescontinued to increase their work rate with excellentroving from Rory Sloane resulting in a nine point lead tothe Ranges. However, a lapse in Eastern’s defensivepressure enabled the Falcon’s to pile on3 successivegoals and regain a nine point lead. Before successivegoals to Grant Lofthouse (St Simons) gave the Ranges athree point lead at the main break.Eastern Ranges - 8.4.52 Geelong Falcons - 7.7.49After halftime the Ranges came out with all gunsblazing, keeping the Falcons scoreless until late in thethird term. A quick centre break gave Rory Sloane thefirst goal of the quarter and the Ranges an early ninepoint lead. Leigh Kitchin (Wantirna South) wasimpressive around the stoppages, whilst Cunninghamand Sloane continued their dominance. Dylan Van Unen(North Ringwood) and the Ranges backline wereexceptional early in the third, keeping the Falcons goalless until late in the term when they piled on 3 goals.McDonald and Lofthouse provided strong targets upforward and helped the Ranges to a ten point leadheading into the final quarter.Eastern Ranges - 12.5.77 Geelong Falcons - 10.7.67A thrilling last quarter saw the Ranges continue theirwinning streak, clenching victory in the dying stages ofthe match.
