We also work locally and regionally toeducate school children about the benefits of solar, wind, and water power. The generous donations ofour members support SEI’s outreach programs.INVESTINVEST — International Volunteers in theEnvironmentally Sustainable Technologies (INVEST)connects alumni of SEI’s renewable energy program withorganizations in rural development around the world.Scholarships — SEI offers a limited number ofscholarships to students to learn renewable energytechnology and sustainable design skills.Solar In the Schools (SIS) — This high-energyeducational outreach for K-12 students and educatorsdelivers classroom presentations and fair appearanceswith interactive and hands-on renewable energy activitiesand scientific experimentation that fosters critical thinking.Native American Program — SEI works withNative Americans to help them satisfy their energy andhousing needs with renewable energy and natural building.SEI works with Native American NGOs and nonprofitorganizations and has trained people from the WesternShoshone, Skull Valley Goshute, Lakota Sioux, Yurok,Zuni, Hopi, and Chippewa Nations.Women’s Program — Offering women’s-onlytechnical training workshops in a supportive learningatmosphere to bring more women into the renewableenergy field. Some scholarships are available.Work-Trade Program — For the last 19 years, SEI’swork-trade program has enabled people from around theworld to hone their skills and improve their capabilitieswhile helping to strengthen and grow SEI.More than two billion people in the world live withoutaccess to electricity. Electricity can improve lives byproviding a better source of light to study andperform tasks, by powering medical appliances forhealth centers, and by providing power forincome-generating micro-enterprises.Numerous organizations around the world workto improve lives with renewable energy, yet manyorganizations are poorly funded, understaffed, or lacka sufficient number of people with technical expertise.Fortunately, many SEI alumni are willing to volunteertheir time to help improve the lives of people aroundthe world while experiencing new cultures and waysof life. Yet, many of these people are unaware of theopportunities that exist. For this reason, SEI created INVEST: InternationalVolunteers in Environmentally Sustainable Technologies.Think of INVEST as a renewable energy Peace Corps.SEI connects alumni of its renewable energy educationprogram with appropriate organizations working inrural development. After successfully completing SEIworkshops, alumni can volunteer in an internationalproject helping to electrify rural communities withrenewable energy, build sustainable houses, and trainlocal users and technicians. For a list of SEI’s partner organizations, or to find outmore about upcoming projects, please e-mail:invest@solarenergy.org.
