SEI outreachSolar in the Schools (SIS)SEI’s Solar In the Schools (SIS) programoffers a model renewable energy educationcurriculum tailored for grades K-12.This program includes class discussions,interactive and hands-on activitieson renewable energy, and scientificexperimentation that fosters critical thinking.Thousands of students and teachers haveparticipated in the SIS program, established in2002, through SEI’s many regional classroompresentations and renewable energy sciencekits that are lent out to regional teachers.SIS also works with school administrations toeducate their student bodies in conjunctionwith the installation of actual renewableenergy systems.In 2007, SEI created its first accreditedteacher training workshop, Renewable Energyfor Educators. This annual four-day workshopallows SIS to effectively increase its nationaloutreach by bringing in participating youtheducators from around the country to learnin the inspiring setting of SEI’s Carbondale,Colorado headquarters.SIS has inspired many young people withvarious displays and presentations, butthe most beloved demonstration is alwaysSEI’s Solar School Bus – a vegetable oiland biodiesel-powered school bus outfittedwith a 400-watt solar -electric system andinformation about making a difference bycreating a sustainable future.Solar In the Schools would not be possiblewithout the support of its members, financialdonors, and partnering organizations.SIS CONTACTNoah Davis – Solar In the SchoolsProgram Coordinator(970) 963-8855 ext 114SEI ScholarshipsSEI is proud to offer a limited number of scholarships to studentsto learn renewable energy technology and sustainable designskills. The scholarship provides financial assistance of 50% oftuition for one class per student per calendar year. Students areresponsible for transportation, housing, and meal expenses.Traditionally, SEI scholarships have been awarded to people fromdeveloping countries or those in financial hardship who would notbe able to participate without this help.There is no fee to apply, however, if participants are awarded ascholarship, they are required to submit half of the balance dueon their tuition to secure a place in the class/workshop. SEI outreachWork-Trade ProgramSEI trades work-traders 100% off of tuition for eight weeks of workshopsin exchange for eight weeks of work. SEI matches existing needs to thework-traders’ skills, providing the most beneficial arrangement – SEIreceives much-needed help with the day-to-day workload and specialprojects, and work-traders trade time and knowledge for free tuition toSEI’s Renewable Energy Education Program. The true added benefitis that SEI can work and play with new people from all over the countrywho offer a fresh perspective on renewable energy. SEI strives to offerthe same quality experience for its work-traders by making their timeinclusive, educational, and lots of fun. Many womenhave little hands-on electrical experience and are waryof attending a co-ed course with men who have grownup using power tools. A yearprior, the Skull Valley tribalmembers celebrated thesuccessful defeat of a proposednuclear waste storage facilityon their reservation. Thecommunity feels the PV training, attended by NativeAmericans from four different tribes, is the beginning ofa movement toward a new energy economy focusing onsunlight and life rather than radiation and death.solarenergy.org • 970.963.885533
