Archaeological investigations at Nassaw and Weyapee in2007 and 2008 revealed traces of houses and otherarchitecture and associated facilities such as food storagepits, pottery smudge pits, and graves. These investigationsby UNC archaeological field schools providethe most detailed evidence of mid-18 th century Catawbalife recovered to date.
Patterns of postholes at Nassaw indicate rectangularhouses built on earthfast post frameworks. These wereprobably gable-end buildings that resembled theMenominee lodge above. Subfloor pits (shown inbrown) stored food and other household goods.
