Postmodernism: Style andSubversion 1970 to 1990“When the exhibition 'Postmodernism:Style and Subversion, 1970 to 1990' opensin September 2011, the Museum and itsvisitors will have ample reason to thankthe Friends of the V&A. In addition toproviding lead support for the project, theFriends have also supported theacquisition of five key works which will beincluded in the displays. First up is aceramic Totem by the Italian designerEttore Sottsass. This unique handmadeobject is an early investigation intopostmodern symbolism, ornament andpattern, anticipating Sottsass'sgroundbreaking work with the designgroup Memphis by over fifteen years. Thesection of the exhibition entitled'Apocalypse Then' - about post-industrialdesign in the early 1980s - will include twofurther recent acquisitions supported bythe Friends: a 'Concrete Stereo' by Britain'smost famous designer, Ron Arad; and aversion of the 'Pratt Chair' by anotherItalian, Gaetano Pesce. Though using verydifferent materials - smashed reinforcedconcrete and poured plastic resin - the twopieces are similar in their energeticdestructive aesthetic. Finally, two designsby the Czech emigre Bořek Šípek , one inglass and the other a silver-mountedceramic bowl, will demonstrate theproliferation of postmodern ideas. Takentogether these five objects tell the historyof postmodernism in miniature, chartingthe progression from early explorations ofcolour to vivid, confrontational objects to amore luxurious style appropriate to theboom times of the 1980s.”Glenn Adamson, Co-curator,Postmodernism: Style andSubversion 1970-1990Totem by Ettore Sottsass.
