Role of GovernmentBy more than three-to-one, MuslimAmericans say they prefer a bigger governmentthat provides more services (70%) over a smallergovernment providing fewer services (21%). Incontrast with the general public, there are onlysmall ideological differences among Muslims inviews of the size and scope of government.Large majorities of Muslim Americanliberals (77%), moderates (66%) andconservatives (70%) express support for a biggergovernment that delivers more services. Amongthe general public, by contrast, there are sharpideological divisions: 57% of liberals supportbigger government, while 58% of conservativessupport smaller government.Consistent with their preference for alarger government providing more services,most Muslims (73%) say that governmentshould do more to help the needy even if itmeans going deeper into debt. Just 17%believe that the government cannot afford todo much more to help the needy.
