Manager’s ProfileMartin RingBNY Mellon (Wroclaw)Headquarters (global): New YorkManaging Directormartin_ring@bnymellon.comBPOs and SSCsOutsourcingPolandOperations in Poland:As part of BNY Mellon’s efforts to optimiseits infrastructure and to support its ongoinggrowth strategy, in March 2012 the companyannounced the creation of a new Global DeliveryCentre (GDC) in Wroclaw. This decision is in line with the company’saims of consolidating high quality operationsservice delivery to clients in a smallernumber of global locations. Through thisstrategy the company is leveraging the newGDC’s proximity to a skilled workforce in aneconomically attractive location and a preferredtime zone. At the same time, it willallow us to consolidate some more commonfunctions required to service our increasinglyglobal client base.Staff at the new Centre will work in highlyskilled roles predominantly in the areasof Investment Accounting and SecuritiesTransaction Processing. How do you expect it to develop? The new Centre will leverage our existingWroclaw-based office, formerly operated byPNC Global Investment Servicing, whichBNY Mellon acquired in July 2010. The officein Wroclaw currently employs just over 100staff supporting Investment Services businessesand has capacity for up to 310.Wroclaw becomes BNY Mellon’s fifthGlobal Delivery Centre (GDC) – the otherscontinue to be located in Pittsburgh, Manchester,Pune, and Chennai. The designation of our Wroclaw locationas a GDC underlines the continued importanceof Continental Europe to our globalstrategy and represents a significant investmentby the Company in supporting our futuregrowth in the region.Advice to other managers about setting upPoland is a great place to do business, but itis very important to understand the legal, statutory and regulatory framework. Goodtaxation, accounting and legal guidance is essentialwhen setting up a new business here. The business support framework establishedin Wroclaw by the Lord Mayor, PresidentDutkiewicz, is excellent. The WroclawAgglomeration Development Agency (ARAW)are very pro-active and they have providedcontinual support to our business as we havebeen developing. The Polish Information andForeign Investment Agency (“PAIIZ”) are alsovery helpful and supportive. The ABSL (Association of Business ServiceLeaders) has recently established a localchapter in Wroclaw and this is also a greatsource of knowledge and expertise. BNYMellon has certainly received a warm welcomefrom all of these agencies, organisationsand individuals and this has provedvery beneficial as we look to grow our businessin Poland.Employee issuesHighly educated and qualified staff fromgraduates to senior managers. Our cultureis very important to us and we look to alignour employees with those values, so technicalcompetencies and ‘soft’ skills are of equalimportance to us.We recognise the high potential and willingnessto learn among our staff, and these‘can do’ qualities will be key as we seek tobuild our GDC. We also recognise that thelabour market is competitive (in particularin our industry) and we believe we enjoy astrong advantage when it comes to partnership. We build a partnership internally withour employees by fostering an environmentthat encourages ‘accountability’ around anindividual’s own development and careerprogression. Backed up by our commitmentto equal opportunities and internal learning& development schemes, this providesour employees with opportunities to growtogether with our company. Externally webuild partnerships with our local communitiesthrough the provision of two daysfully paid leave to each employee to performvoluntary community work, we also supportstaff fundraising efforts by matchingtheir donations etc. Through our CommunityPartnership Giving Program, employeeshave been able to contribute in a meaningfulway to a local orphanage for children withspecial needs.Positive surprises – and critiques – of operatingin PolandWe have a great team here in Wroclaw andwe are very impressed by the high levels ofdedication and enthusiasm displayed by ouremployees. Wroclaw is a major universitycity and so has the demographics we lookfor; the close proximity of other, neighbouringuniversity cities also offers a deep poolof educated, talented and motivated graduatespossessing excellent English and otherforeign language skills.Did subsidies from Polish authorities playa role in your decision to set up in Poland? We are in discussions with the Polish governmentto secure a special purpose grant foremployment in relation to the developmentof our Global Delivery Center. This is naturallyan important factor to be consideredalong with the other advantages that Wroclawand Poland have to offer.■22
