Archaeology South-East2008058: Holbury Infants School, Holbury, Hampshire1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Archaeology South-East (ASE), a division of the Centre for AppliedArchaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London wascommissioned by Hampshire County Council to undertake an archaeologicalwatching brief during the construction of an extension to the existing schoolbuildings at Cadlands Primary School, formerly Holbury Infants School,Holbury, Southampton, Hampshire NGR 443200,103355 (Figure 1).1.2 The proposed development is located within the grounds of CadlandsPrimary School in Holbury, Southampton. The school is situated off WhitefieldRoad, within the centre of a housing estate located to the southwest ofFawley Road and is bound on all sides by residential properties.1.3 The site lies within an archaeologically sensitive area and Stephen Appleby,Senior Archaeologist, Hampshire County Council (HCC), recommended thatan archaeological watching brief should be maintained during all constructiongroundworks.1.4 A Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) outlining the requirements of theevaluation was prepared (Sygrave 2007). The WSI was submitted and dulyapproved by Stephen Appleby Senior Archaeologist, Hampshire CountyCouncil (HCC) prior to the archaeological works taking place.1.5 The fieldwork was undertaken by Michelle Collings from the 24 th July to 22 ndAugust 2007. On-site assistance was provided by Tom Collie on the 26 th July2007 and Anna Doherty and Liane Peyre on the 27 th July 2007 and LeighJames, Rob Davis, Gemma Norburn and Rachael Billson during the course ofthe work.1.6 The underlying geology consists of Plateau Gravel Deposits (BritishGeological Survey Solid and Drift sheet 330).1.7 A site TBM of 50.104m OD was set up using an existing station of 50.304mOD located on the tarmac play-court to the southwest of the area investigatedas illustrated on Figure 2. The excavation area and monitored service trenchwere located in relation to existing site plans of the school (Figure 2).1© Archaeology South-East
