High Speed Coax and Twinax ContactsAmphenolAerospaceOptional choices, other than standard crimp or solder 500 cycle and 1500 cyclecontacts, are often required for high frequency interconnections. Amphenoloffers shielded contacts for RF applications as well as balanced high sensitivitycircuits.SHIELDED COAXIALCONTACTSHigh speed Coax contacts withina connector provide the shieldingprotection, and many cases theRF/microwave performance,needed in the circuitry of manyapplications.CONCENTRICTWINAXSHIELDEDCONTACTSHigh performance shieldingcapabilities are available withConcentric Twinax contacts.These are designed for protectionfrom magnetic and electrostaticinterference including nuclearelectro-magnetic pulse. Thecontact is crimp terminable totwisted shielded cable and is fullyscoop-proof (recessed pins) inMIL-DTL-38999 connectors. Theconcentric twinax contact isengineered to maintain shieldintegrity through a multi-pincircular connector and does notrequire contact polarization withinthe insert. Size 8 concentrictwinax contacts were developedfor use in MIL-STD-1553BAirborne multiplex data busapplications. Ideal for thisapplication need is the highperformance Tri-Start connectorwith its fully scoop-proof featureof recessed pins.Shielded Coax Contacts<strong>All</strong> popular series of Amphenol circular connectorsand many rectangular connectors are available with coax contacts. Diametersare standardized in sizes 4, 8, <strong>12</strong> and 16 so that coaxial contacts may beinterchanged with power contacts in connector arrangements which includethose sizes. Popular RG cable types and a variety of other commercial coaxialcables can be accommodated. See page 390 for coax contact performancedata. Matched impedance size <strong>12</strong> coax contacts are also available(see page 394). The use of coax contacts within a connector, compared to theuse of individual coaxial/shielded connectors, offers advantages of savings inspace and weight and no cross-mating difficulties. Coax and standard contactsmay be mixed within the connector to meet special signal needs. The connectoritself offers further protection and environmental integrity through the grommetsand seals used, and coaxial junction is protected by the connector outer shell.Concentric Twinax Contacts Size 8MIL-DTL-38999 Lanyard “Breakaway”Connector with Concentric TwinaxContacts, Qualified for MIL-STD-1760The concentric twinax contact is crimp terminable to twisted shielded cable.Size <strong>12</strong> concentric twinax contacts were developed for SAAB. They can be usedin any size <strong>12</strong> cavity of D38999 I, II or III or SJT connector.Size 8 & <strong>12</strong> coax, triax or twinax contacts or size 16 coax contacts are availablein Ground Plane Connectors (See photo preceding page).
