RoHS Compliant Plating OptionIntroductionRoHS Compliant Plating Optionfor Composite ThermoplasticConnectors and AccessoriesRoHS-Compliant9/2002/ EG5The 30 May 2008 MIL-DTL-38999 Rev Lspecification provides guidance on the useof alternative parts with less hazardousor nonhazardous materials. In this regard, thespecification provides for a number of alternativeplating materials. Users are directed to selectthe least hazardous plating material that meetsthe form, fit and function requirements of theirapplication.Glenair would like to draw our customer’sattention to one of the finish options from thisspecification that conforms to this guidance:T – Environment resisting Nickelfluorocarbon polymer.Conductive Nickel withfluorocarbon polymeradditives over a suitableunderplate to withstand 500hours of dynamic salt spraytesting.This MIL-DTL-38999L “T” plating solution iscadmium and hexavalent chromium free, whichallows it to be defined as RoHS compliant. NOTE:as of this printing the SAE AS85049 committeehas not yet defined plating codes for this finish.Glenair has developed its own Ni-PTFEsurface finish that meets all the D38999requirements but radically outperforms standardnickel fluorocarbon polymer flnishes in the mostimportant areas including an amazing 2000 hoursdynamic salt spray resistance when plated oncomposite parts.This Glenair nickel fluorocarbon polymerplating has been assigned the XMT code in theplating tables in this composite catalog.
