BAAL Conference 2004 37 th Annual BAAL Meeting Post-Graduate Colloquia 2004 Getting a paper published in an academic journal Catherine Xiang Post-Graduate officer for the BAAL The Open University H.Xiang@open.ac.uk difficulties that PG members could have regarding publication during their PhD life. Getting paper published in an academic journal may be one of measurements for one‟s achievements through out the PhD. The main aim of the colloquium is to share the experience among the PG members in terms of publication and explore the factors and issues that are relevant to getting paper published. More importantly, we would be appreciated if we could have many reviewers, editors or more established researchers to participant in this colloquium and provide more insights and practical advice for those post-graduate students who would like to do in the future or who are already in the process of doing it. Therefore, the colloquium will be emphasising on interaction among the participants and mutual contribution towards the topic. BAAL Conference 2004 37 th Annual BAAL Meeting Invited Colloquia Migration and Diasporas Convenors: Prof. Mike Baynham School of Education, University of Leeds M.Baynham@education.leeds.ac.uk Prof. Dariusz Galasinski School of Humanities Languages and Social Sciences, University of Wolverhampton d.galasinski@wlv.ac.uk Discussant: Marilyn Martin-Jones School of Education and Lifelong Learning, University of Wales Aberystwyth mqm@aber.ac.uk Colloquium Abstract In an era in which public discourses, particularly in the media, increasingly present migration and diasporas through the lenses of nationalist and racist rhetorics (Wodak, & Riesegl,1999), creating atmospheres of social panic in which migrants, refugees and asylum seekers are seen as threatening the stable borders of national identities, there is, an urgent need for committed applied linguistic research “from the inside,” emphasizing through micro discourse analysis the subjective construction of these movements of human beings and the discursive processes in which they become engaged, rather than the objectivist “othering” of these in nationalist or racist mainstream discourses. Of course, as Wertsch has shown, narrative processes are also at work in these public discourses, in the constitutive stories which nations tell themselves. Our interest in this colloquium is in the stories that are ignored/silenced/othered by the public discourse on displacement, migration and settlement, but these „silenced‟ stories will necessarily be revealing about the nature of the public discourses within which migrants and migration are positioned. We are interested in the communicative practices that characterize processes of migration (which we see as starting while still at home, packing, planning, or perhaps hoping) and Diaspora We are also interested in the institutional processes such as asylum seeking procedures and the related power struggles over what constitute acceptable texts in those circumstances. Contributions to the colloquium may address a range of issues: � Issues of representation: how are migrants, refugees and processes of displacement, migration and settlement represented? � Issues of lived experience: how migrants cope with their experience of the process of migration and their sending and host communities? � Issues of identity construction: how are the identities of „migrant‟ „refugee‟, „displaced person‟ constructed in discourse? � Issues of orientation in social worlds: how do shifts in time and space produce the shifts in social identities and processes characteristic of displacement, migration and settlement? � Issues of institutional practices: what are the institutional practices related to displacement? Paper one: Polycentricity and interactional regimes in ‘global neighborhoods’ Jan Blommaert Universiteit Gent jan.blommaert@ugent.be James Collins University at Albany, SUNY james.Collins@kvab.be, collins@albany.edu Stef Slembrouck Universiteit Gent stef.slembrouck@ugent.be Focusing on multilingualism in Late-Modern urban environments, this paper argues for the neighborhood as a unit of practice mapped by field-specific relations. We show how language use and multilingualism are given social form by conditions of polycentricity and regimes of interactional practice. We present a preliminary typology of different places in an immigrant neighborhood in Ghent (Belgium) that organize different patterns of language use and language assessment.
