Introduction11INTRODUCTIONWith the exception of traction splints, almost all kinds of splintsother than the SAM ® SPLINT gain their strength from the rigiditynaturally inherent in the materials composing them. Inthe case of air splints or vacuum splints, this rigidity is suppliedby air pressure or the absence thereof. The SAM ® SPLINTis different in the sense that it has little inherent rigidity butgains strength from structural curves produced in cross-sectionalong its longitudinal axis. When these cross-sectional curvesare removed (i.e. the splint is flattened into a single plane), therigidity is also removed, and the splint can be easily rolled orfolded for storage. The manual begins with a discussion of the general propertiesof the splint. This section contains information regarding construction, principles of use, environmental comments, cutting, cleaning, and precautions. The techniques described are not intended to be all-inclusivebut should contain the most commonly used SAM ® SPLINTconfigurations. At the urging of my wilderness medicine comrades,I have included a chapter on alternative uses. No doubtthis chapter will one day be expanded to a book of its own. Aspecial thanks is extended to my energetic wife Cherrie, whoseencouragement produced this book and to our volunteer andprofessional emergency medical personnel friends around theworld for their support, ideas and ingenuity.
