58Alternative UsesCANOE PADDLESHORT SNOW SHOVELOne end of the 36 inchsplint is rolled to createa hand grip. The splintextending from that gripis folded to a corrugatedcross-section as illustrated.This corrugation providesextreme strength for thepaddle stem. The corrugation,although more relaxed,extends into the paddleblade itself. The handle andstem can be supported withduct tape.<strong>Sam</strong>e as the canoe paddle,except the EVA foam is cutor burned away from theshovel blade. The outer edgesmay be acutely folded foradditional strength.
Alternative Uses59FLEXIBLE CONTAINER (SAM PAN)left unfastened, the headand neck easily fit withinthe plastic bag. The pan canbe molded to any area, evenbetween the legs.2. For thawing frost bite in awilderness setting.To create a SAM Pan, folda 36 inch SAM ® SPLINTinto a circle. The opposingends of the splint may be leftopen or secured with interlockingbends, paper clips orduct tape. Select a standardplastic bag, sized to yourdesired use. Place the plasticbag within the splint circleand fold all excess bag overthe splint edges. The foldedportion of the bag can be leftfree, rolled over the splint orsecured with paper clips.You have now created a flexiblebasin suitable for manyuses including:1. The irrigation of scalp,trunk, and extremity wounds.With the ends of the splint3. For personal hygiene, onecan use the SAM Pan as awash basin, or for collectingbody wastes (i.e. emesisbasin, urinal or bed pan).4. For use as a trash container.5. In food preparation, or asa serving bowl.6. For washing dishes.7.
