NEWSAUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRYA CAUSE FOR OPTIMISMFederal Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Minister, Senator Kim Carrsaid the transformation the <strong>Australian</strong> automotive sector is undergoing givesus cause for great optimism about future economic growth andenvironmental sustainability in the industry.“<strong>Australian</strong> vehicle production volumes for2009 have fallen to the lowest level since1957, yet car manufacturers in Australia haveemerged as survivors from the globalrecession,” Senator Carr said.“This is a testament to both the sacrificesmade within the industry, and to theeffectiveness of the support it has receivedfrom the Rudd Labor Government.“The strength of the partnershipsdeveloped by the Government with companiesand unions has allowed the <strong>Australian</strong>automotive industry to pull through the crisiswith productive capacity in place andworkforce substantially intact - and this is acause for celebration.”Senator Carr said Australia’s automotiveindustry has shown a resilience that has goneunmatched by the majority of its globalcounterparts.“Annual vehicle sales in the United Statesand Japan were down 21.2 percent and 9.3percent respectively on the previous year,compared to only a 7.4 percent drop inAustralia over the same period,” he said.“Encouragingly, automotive marketslocally and overseas are showing signs ofrejuvenating with end of year increases insales, including record-highs for <strong>Australian</strong>vehicle sales in December.“<strong>Automotive</strong> manufacturing in Australia ispoised to take advantage of this upward trendwith the industry already moving forward inthe production of greener, more fuel-efficientvehicles.”Senator Carr attributed the RuddGovernment’s $6.2 billion A New Car Plan fora Greener Future for driving thistransformation and moving the industrysteadily towards a stronger footing.“The sector is a strategically importantpart of Australia’s economy and providesemployment to 51,700 <strong>Australian</strong>s directlyand another 100,000 in dependentindustries.“Investment in research and developmentLOW FUEL CONSUMPTION,FIVE-STAR SAFETYThe NSW Roads and Traffic Authority and NRMA Motoring and Services hasreleased new crash test results showing that low fuel consumption cars canalso achieve the highest safety ratings.The Mini Cooper diesel hatch, Ford FiestaECOnetic diesel hatch, Volvo C30 diesel hatchand Toyota Prius have achieved a five-starsafety rating from the Australasian New CarAssessment Program (ANCAP).Other ANCAP results show the recentlyreleased Subaru Liberty Exiga and theupgraded four-cylinder Hyundai Santa Fe alsoachieved five-star ANCAP ratings. The HondaCity sedan achieved a four-star rating.NRMA vehicle safety expert Jack Haley saidthe results show that manufacturers can makelow fuel consumption vehicles withoutcompromising on safety.“Subaru continues to achieve five-starANCAP results across its range and the fourcylinderHyundai Santa Fe has improved itssafety to score five stars for the first time,” hesaid.NSW Centre for Road Safety Director, DrSoames Job, said the Honda City missed outon five stars because electronic stability control(ESC) was not an option.“ANCAP has required ESC for five starssince the beginning of 2008,” Dr Job said.All of the five-star models include headprotectingside airbags or curtains, anti-lockbrakes and ESC as standard.Importantly, the results apply to all modelsin the various ranges.There were mixed results for pedestrianprotection, with the City, Exiga and FiestaECOnetic achieving three out of four stars.
