ActivitiesAnnual Scientific MeetingsThe principal meeting is the Annual conference. Inrecent years these have been thematic, multidisciplinarymeetings of three days held at a European location. Manyof the papers presented at the Annual Meetings aresubsequently published in the European Review.The Erasmus Lecture and MedalThe Erasmus Lecture and award of a medal were introducedinto the programme of the Annual Meeting in 1992 toprovide an opportunity for Academia members and othersto hear a renowned scholar. The Erasmus lecturers haveincluded: Janos Kornai, Ernst Mestmäcker, LawrenceFreedman, Alain Touraine, Hubert Markl, Paul Crutzen,Peter Burke, Raoul van Caenegem, Kristof Glamann,Edoardo Boncinelli, Georgio Bernardi, Harold Kroto, CarlDjerassi, Stig Strömholm, Pierre Léna, Bert Sakmann,Francisco Márquez Villaneuva, Semir Zeki, Jean Fréchet,Carlo Ginzburg and Manual Castells.The Burgen ScholarsIn order to recognise the contribution to learning ofyounger scientists and scholars, the Academia appoints‘Burgen Scholars’ at its Annual Meeting. The Scholars,named after the Academia’s Founding President, areoutstanding younger academics from the host country; theyare invited to participate fully in the Annual Meeting andpresent summaries of their work.The Gold MedalThe Academia’s Gold Medal is awarded occasionally toinstitutions or individuals who through their inspiration,political efforts, managerial skill, or financial means havesupported European science and scholarship. The Medalhas been awarded to the Royal Society of London, HeinzRiesenhuber, George Soros, Paul Sacher, Jacques Delors,Klaus Tschira, The Max Planck Society , the DeutscheForschungsgemeinschaft, The Riksbankens Jubileumsfondand the Wenner Gren Foundations.
