AFRICA HEALTH 2011 POST-SHOW REPORTMarket backgroundSub-Saharan Africa holds 11% of the world’s total populationbut carries 24% of the global disease burden leaving room fortremendous development and business opportunities in thehealthcare sector.According to a 2009 report from the International FinancialBank, spending on health in Sub-Saharan countries could doublein the next ten years. “Expenditures are expected to grow from$16.7 billion in 2005 to around $35 billion in 2016”.The private sector is playing a major role in most countriesin this region. In South Africa for instance, the government isspending approximately R80 per person per year (less than USD12) on drugs against R1860 (USD 275) from the private sector.A report entitled “South African Healthcare Market Analysis”published by the RNCOS (leading market research institute) inApril 2011 states “In addition to the demands regarding hospitalservices and medical devices, there will be strong demand forprimary healthcare level drugs, such as generics, antibiotics, andOTC in coming years as a number of drugs are due to lose theirpatents.
