RoseFig. 4: British occupation of New Brunswick, February 1777.There are no reported postmarks from New Brunswick during the Confederation periodwhich began on October 18, 1782. However, in the Statehood period, following Congress’adoption of the Act of February 20, 1792, we find one of the most striking of the early statehoodhandstamped straight line postmarks. Beginning in 1795 and continuing into 1796, NewBrunswick used a handstamp with the initials “N.B.” and the date. 12 Two folded letters with thispostmark and the newly adopted rates are shown in Figures 5 and 6.
