NJ PRIVATE EXPRESSES: OFFICES IN NEWARK, PART 6B ~ Bruce MosherNew Express Co. (ca. 1907)The New Express advertisement shown in Figure 6-22 was taken from a 1907 shippersguide. 8 This express ‘distributed’ express merchandise in Newark and Jersey City, so it isassumed they maintained offices in both cities. No other information is presently known aboutthe New Express Company.Figure 6-22. 1907 New Express advertisement.More Newark Expresses ExistedOur research time at The Newark Public Library ended with the 1882 city directory, so therelated portion of this report is ended at 1882. In 1881 and 1882, 30 Newark express companieswere listed in the city directories, an increase of 13 expresses compared to 1880. New expresscompany starts in many other cities in the northeastern states were on the rise in the ensuingyears, and most probably in Newark, too. No doubt, many additional local express companiescan be found in the 1883 and later Newark directories, and there are also probably some veryinteresting, express company advertisements residing in those annuals. Maybe someone will geta chance to pursue these historical sources in the future and then compose a sequel to this report.AcknowledgmentWe are forever grateful to the late Calvet (Cal) M.
