This may mean that Ewins’ Express was associated with Wells & Co., however, there isalso speculation that this Ewins’ Express was one of the semiautonomous expresses that workedfor Adams & Co. The illustrated folded letter was dated October 10, 1855. No mention of thisexpress was found in the 1845–60 <strong>New</strong>ark city directories.The second label is very much like the first and is shown in Figure 6-17, the onlydifference being that the “cor. Broad” words have been removed from the <strong>New</strong>ark office address.This label is the same color and size as that in Figure 6-16 and is affixed to a mortgage that isdated April 1, 1851. So, we have two dated items - 1851 and 1855 - for Ewin’s <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> &<strong>New</strong> York Express. No additional information is presently available about this express company.(EWSX-L2 label)Feary’s Mustang Express (ca. 1887–88)(Bill Sammis collection)Figure 6-17. 1850’s Ewins’ express label.Because of its Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue listing for many years, Feary’s MustangExpress is one of the best known local <strong>New</strong>ark expresses. Jabez Feary was the local <strong>New</strong>arkagent for the Pacific and Atlantic Telegraph Company, who also found time to run his MustangExpress. Feary used a red adhesive stamp (Scott 66L1) that initially appeared on June 21, 1887and was valued at five cents (see the text in Figure 6-18). The Scott listing is under “LocalStamps,” but the editors are not sure that Feary & Co. was a local post because they state “Someauthorities consider this item to be an express company label rather than a [local post] stamp.”after their listing. 5 Our opinion, based upon Dr. Mitchell’s contemporary 1887 report in Figure6-18, is that Feary’s adhesive is an undenominated express company 5¢ stamp.Vol. 33/No. 2NJPHWhole No. 15881May 2005
