Entering hisfourth season, Fakler works with Bronco defensemen in addition to his responsibilitiesof recruiting, scouting, video breakdown, and practice andgame preparation. He was heavily involved in the recruiting of freshmandefenseman Luke Witkowski. Witkowski was drafted in the sixth round ofthe 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.“Marc has earned a reputation as a tireless worker and is someone I feeldemonstrates tremendous professionalism,” says Culhane. “He is a solidrecruiter and communicates well as a coach.”Two of Fakler’s recruits, Greg Squires and Kevin Connauton, from the 2008-09 season went on to receive CCHA All-Rookie Team honorable mention.Connauton was drafted in the third round of the <strong>2009</strong> NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks, becoming his second recruit to be drafted.During the summer, Fakler was a speaker at the National <strong>Hockey</strong> Coaches Symposium, which educates coaches seeking USA <strong>Hockey</strong>’s highest level ofcoaching certification. Fakler spoke to coaches from across the nation along with presentations from several current and former National <strong>Hockey</strong> Leaguecoaches and general managers, including Ron Wilson and Brian Burke of the Toronto Maple Leafs, John Tortorella of the New York Rangers, and PeterLaviolette formerly of the Carolina Hurricanes.“It was quite an honor to be asked to speak at such an event by USA <strong>Hockey</strong>,” said Fakler. “The opportunity to aid coaches across the country in player developmentat the amateur level and the ability to share ideas with prominent figures involved with hockey was a tremendous experience.”Fakler previously served two seasons (2004-06) as assistant coach at Robert Morris University. Fakler helped guide the Colonials through their first twovarsity seasons, working under former Bronco Derek Schooley. At RMU, Fakler instructed forwards and defensemen, coordinated recruiting efforts and assistedwith video editing. He coached three College <strong>Hockey</strong> America All-Rookie Selections and recruited two First Team CHA All-Conference selections, oneSecond Team All-Conference selection, two All-Rookie team selections, and one CHA league scoring champion. He also coached and recruited the all-timeleading scorer in the history of the program.Fakler also served two seasons (2002-04) as a volunteer assistant coach at Wayne State University. While there, the Warriors captured the College <strong>Hockey</strong>America Tournament Championship and advanced to the 2003 NCAA Tournament. Fakler assisted coach Bill Wilkinson with game strategy, pre-scoutingopponents, breaking down tape and instruction during practice sessions.Other coaching stops for Fakler include two seasons as assistant general manager/assistant coach for the Junior A Compuware Ambassadors of the NorthernAmerican <strong>Hockey</strong> League and assistant coach for the Junior B Grand Rapids Owls. He helped Compuware capture the 2002 national championship andNorth American <strong>Hockey</strong> League Regular Season and Playoff Championships. He continues to be actively involved with USA <strong>Hockey</strong> as a coach at the USA<strong>Hockey</strong> Select 16-17 Festivals each summer and as a lecturer with USA <strong>Hockey</strong>’s Coaches Education Program.A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., Fakler received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Eastern Michigan University in 2002 and added a master’s degree insports administration from Wayne State in 2005.Marc is married to the former Michelle Oakley. SCOTTROBSONASSISTANT COACHQuinnipiac, 1998Second season at WMUEntering his second season as an assistant coach at <strong>Western</strong> Michigan,Robson worked with the Bronco power play unit that was ranked fourth inthe CCHA and 13th in the nation 2008-09.Under Robson, the power play converted on 18.9-percent of chances andscored a total of 39 goals. Several Broncos excelled on the power play, leadingto career highs in goals, assists and points.Robson spent seven years as an assistant at Quinnipiac, his alma mater.During his time at Quinnipiac the Bobcats posted a record of 125-78-18,winning two regular-season championships, reaching two Atlantic <strong>Hockey</strong>Championships and one ECAC tournament final.“Scott comes from a winning environment at Quinnipiac and was a two-time captain as a player,”says head coach Jim Culhane. “He is a great recruiter and is an offensive minded coach.”Robson has also spent time as an assistant coach with the Valley Junior Warriors of the EJHL.After two seasons in the position with the Warriors, he took a position as the general managerand head coach of the Bay State Breakers in the same league. Robson presided over hockeyand business operations for the Breakers. Several players under Robson’s tutelage went on toplay hockey at both the Division I and professional levels.The Randolph, Mass., native was a four-year letterwinner and two-time captain under Quinnipiachead coach Rand Pecknold. Robson finished his playing career with 77 points on 28 goals and49 assists in 90 career games played. He won the 1994-95 Quinnipiac Rookie of the Year awardand the Coaches Award in the 1997-98 season. After graduating in 1998 with a degree in historyhe moved into an assistant coaching position for the 1998-99 season.COACHES BIOGRAPHIESRobson resides in Kalamazoo.ALANAVERYVOLUNTEER COACHSeventh season at WMUAllan Avery begins his seventh season with the Bronco coaching staff, havingserved as a volunteer goaltending coach since the 2002-03 campaign. In2006-07, WMU netminder Riley Gill recorded four shutouts en route to earninga spot on the 2007 CCHA All-Rookie Team.Avery has worked as a traffic crash reconstructionist for the First District Policesince January, 2005.A native of Trenton, Mich., Avery spent a season as a backup goaltender forthe Broncos during the 1987-88 season.Prior to joining the WMU hockey team, Avery was a two-time all-state selection at Trenton High School. His 1986 team won the state title and the 1987 squadranked third in the state under Bronco Skip Howey.“We’re excited to have Allan working with our program,” says Culhane. “Allan has fit in well as a mentor and teacher, helping our goaltenders grow at theirpositions.”21Avery’s previous coaching experience includes stints with several Detroit area high schools and minor league teams.Avery lives in Jackson with his wife Beth, who is a graduate of WMU.
