Since its inception in 1971-72, the CCHA has grown in stature from a collection offledgling hockey programs to the most respected conference in the nation on the ice,off the ice and behind the bench.NCAA TOURNAMENTCCHA teams have accounted for 20 of the 68 NCAA Frozen Four participants from1992-2009.Eight different CCHA teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament in the 1990s: BowlingGreen, Lake Superior, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Northern Michigan, OhioState and Western Michigan. Ferris State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska-Omaha,Notre Dame and Ohio State have been involved so far in the new millennium.The 12 current CCHA teams have combined to win nine of the last 24 NCAA Championships:Bowling Green (1984), Michigan State (1986, 2007), Lake Superior (1988,1992, 1994), Northern Michigan (1991) and Michigan (1996, 1998).HOBEY BAKER WINNERSSix CCHA players have received the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, which has beenpresented to the top player in U.S. college hockey since 1981: Bowling Green forwardGeorge McPhee (1982), Michigan State forward Kip Miller (1990), Bowling Greenforward Brian Holzinger (1995), Michigan forward Brendan Morrison (1997), MichiganState goaltender Ryan Miller (2001), and most recently Michigan forward KevinPorter (2008).ALL-AMERICANSCCHA players have combined for 164 All-American honors, including 85 first-teamselections. Bowling Green defenseman Ken Morrow was the CCHA’s first First-TeamAll-American in 1978. Since college hockey expanded to four conferences in 1984-85, Michigan’s Brendan Morrison is the only player to have been named to the firstteam for three consecutive seasons (1995, 1996, 1997).THE NHL DRAFTNine CCHA players from five of its member schools were selected in the 2009 NHLEntry Draft, including one first-round draft pick. Eighteen players from the CCHA havebeen taken in the first round in the last nine years.Incoming Notre Dame forward Kyle Palmier was taken 26th overall by the AnaheimDucks. Michigan saw two incoming recruits drafted in the second round.For the fourth-straight season, the Broncos have had a player or recruit drafted. Formerdefenseman Kevin Connauton was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the thirdround with the 83rd pick. Rangers) and David Gove (Carolina Hurricanes) represent WMU.ALUMNI IN THE NHLThe CCHA continues to flourish as a producer of NHL-caliber talent. The 2008-09season saw 68 former CCHA players perform at hockey’s highest level.
