Update from the Balkans<br />

The Croatian company M<strong>in</strong>a Plus has just<br />

purchased their first M<strong>in</strong>i <strong>M<strong>in</strong>eWolf</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

This will be the sixth <strong>M<strong>in</strong>eWolf</strong> product <strong>in</strong><br />

Croatia, where three <strong>M<strong>in</strong>eWolf</strong> <strong>mach<strong>in</strong>es</strong>, two<br />

M<strong>in</strong>i <strong>M<strong>in</strong>eWolf</strong>s and a <strong>M<strong>in</strong>eWolf</strong> are already<br />

operational. Along with the two <strong>mach<strong>in</strong>es</strong><br />

owned by NPA <strong>in</strong> Bosnia and Herzegov<strong>in</strong>a,<br />

a total of eight <strong>mach<strong>in</strong>es</strong> are operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

the Balkan region, supported by <strong>M<strong>in</strong>eWolf</strong><br />

Systems’ Regional Office <strong>in</strong> Brcko, Bosnia.<br />

Unseasonal weather conditions hampered<br />

dem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g operations <strong>in</strong> both Croatia and<br />

Bosnia at the end of June. The severe flood<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Slavonia region of Croatia and <strong>in</strong><br />

northern Bosnia ground all dem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g operations<br />

to a halt for one week, caus<strong>in</strong>g unwelcome<br />

downtime for dem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g organisations<br />

M<strong>in</strong>i <strong>M<strong>in</strong>eWolf</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g technical survey around houses for returnees<br />

M<strong>in</strong>e clearance and technical survey operations<br />

of m<strong>in</strong>e suspected areas will ensure the<br />

safe use of arable land and reconstruction of<br />

devastated houses with the aim to improve<br />

the liv<strong>in</strong>g conditions of people <strong>in</strong> this area<br />

and complete the return of refugees and<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the BHMAC, it is estimated that<br />

there are still approximately 300 anti-personnel<br />

and 90 anti-tank m<strong>in</strong>es with<strong>in</strong> 4.8 sq km of<br />

suspected hazardous area <strong>in</strong> the community.<br />

The social, economic and environmental impact<br />

of landm<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> the Gornji Vuksic community<br />

is severe. Many destroyed houses,<br />

the loss of fertile agricultural land and blocked<br />

access to electricity are among the most serious<br />

effects for returnees and for the rural<br />

development of the community.<br />

displaced people so long after the war has<br />

ended.<br />
