4First ever game at Football Park (now AAMI Stadium) in 1974.cutting UP HISTORYBy Robert LaidlawIf the SANFL was a cake, how wouldit look sliced into periods? The SANFL has changed severaltimes over the course of history. We are now heading into a periodof change and for the first time sincethe Adelaide Crows entered the AFLcompetition in 1991, we will see anew era of footy in SA.Pre 20 th Century, SANFL footballchanged when Central District andWoodville entered League ranks. Then there were also the two majorwar interruptions and the adolescentdays of the League. The early years (pre 1900s)Norwood started in the secondseason (1878), and did notlose a game in its first campaign, winning the first of sixconsecutive premierships. From the first match of 1878,Norwood defeated the reigningpremier South Adelaide, with the onlygoal of the game kicked by famedcricketer George Giffen. From thismoment, Norwood laid thefoundation of its early success.Perhaps the best known player inthe colony at the time, WilliamDedman, was Norwood’s first leadingplayer. He was also a member ofSouth Adelaide in the inauguralseason and previously played forCarlton. An interesting name fromNorwood’s early years was ThomasGreen, who debuted as a 15-year-oldin the club’s first season. His youngerbrother Albert received the firstMagarey Medal 20 years later.Besides its six consecutive flags atthe start of its history, Norwood alsowon three in a row from 1887 andanother two in the 1890s, for 11 ofthe first 23 premierships – and alsowon the inaugural Champions ofAustralia in 1888.The only other team to have amajor impact in “the early years” wasSouth, with flags in 1877, 1885 andsix in the 1890s.Into the 20 th century (1900-1915)In 1899 North Adelaide was bottom, then into the 20th century, it won thefirst premiership in 1900, climbingfrom bottom to top. It then won twomore flags in 1902 and 1905.Norwood also won three early flags,in 1901, 1904 and 1907, while WestAdelaide broke through with fourpremierships in five years from 1908,and two Champions of Australiatitles. But the honour of best team in theearly 20th century goes to Port, withfive flags, including an undefeatedrun in 1914, and three Champions ofAustralia honours – 1910, 1913-14.There were many champion playersthrough the period, with the standouttriple Magarey Medallist TomMcKenzie who won the award withWest Torrens (1902) and North twice(1905-06).

Sturt won its first flag in 1915, thefinal Grand Final before WWI, andthen on resumption of play in 1919 ittook out its second premiership.Between the wars (1919-1941)Through the 1920s Norwoodstarted off with three flags infour years, from 1922, and anotherin 1929.A curious sequence, where everyclub won the Grand Final over anine year period started in 1927with West, followed by Port,Norwood, North twice (1930-31),Sturt, Torrens, Glenelg and South(from bottom in 1934 to top in 1935).Between the wars, every team wona flag and Norwood and Port led theway with five premierships each, inthe most well-balanced period in thehistory of the League. Each club also supplied at leastone Magarey Medallist, includingtriple winners Dan Moriarty (South)and Walter Scott (Norwood).Undisputed goalkicking legendKen Farmer (North) was the SANFL’stop spearhead from 1930 to 1940,booting at least 100 goals in eachseason.Post war (1945-1963)A connection between pre andpost WWII was West Torrens, whichfinished bottom in 1941 and top in1945.And Port’s Bob Quinn, whoreceived the Magarey Medal in 1938and, after serving Australia throughthe war, returned to win a second in1945.The post war period would bedominated by Port Adelaide and itscoach Fos Williams, who started atWest before joining the Magpies andleading them to the 1951 premiership, and nine in 15 years – Geof Motleywas in charge of the 1959 success.Port’s six consecutive Grand Finalvictories from 1954 is a SANFLrecord – Norwood’s flags from 1878were without contesting a seasondecider.Through this period, multipleMagarey Medallists were a regularoccurance, with Torrens’ LindsayHead and Sturt’s Len Fitzgerald triplewinners, while Torrens’ Bob Hank,North’s Ron Phillips and South’s JimRussell Ebert.Deane (one retrospectively) wereduel recipients. In 1963 South Adelaide finishedbottom, but the following season, with the inclusion of Woodville andCentral, the Panthers performedanother worst-to-first, after playingcoach Neil Kerley joined the club.Expansion years (1964-1990)The early expansion years saw theemergence of Sturt, under formerNorwood triple premiership coachJack Oatey, through a successfulperiod of seven flags in 11 seasons, including five in a row from 1966.Eventually the period dominancewas equaled by Port Adelaide, under John Cahill, with seven flags,1977, 1979-81 and 1988-90.Two champions defined theexpansion years, Barrie Robran(North) and Russell Ebert (Port),who received three and a recordfour Magarey Medals respectively.Ken Farmer’s SANFL record of 134goals in 1936 was beaten four times,by Glenelg’s Fred Phillis in 1969Illustration of Barrie Robran at Adelaide Oval.(137 goals), Port’s Tim Evans in 1980(146), Sturt’s Rick Davies threeyears later (151) and Magpie ScottHodges in 1990 (153).It was also in this period that thefirst ever game was played atFootball Park (now AAMI Stadium)in 1974.The modern era (1991- today)The modern SANFL started in1991 with the formation of theAdelaide Crows entering the AFLand West Torrens and Woodvilleamalgamating to form the Eagles.Through the 1990s Port wonanother six flags, while in the newmillennium, Central District followedon from its initial premiership in2000 and another eight from 12consecutive Grand Finals.North also provided another tripleMagarey Medallist in James Allan, while Norwood’s Garry McIntoshand Sturt’s Damian Squire were duelwinners. Each period lasted about 22 years. Is a new era now on the horizon?5

TheTricks, conflicts and mind gamesIt happens in every sport. Let’s faceit, mind games are as much a partof our game as green grass, freezingdays and seagulls. It’s easy to point fingers at theobvious culprits – Kevin Sheedy isn’tone to shy away from tactics, likefielding players at the first bouncethat have been named on the bench.Sheedy is also no stranger tocontroversial comments. And oftenduring the week leading into a biggame, he won’t hesitate to throwaround statements to put oppositionplayers off. Does it work? Maybe, butafter years in the industry, eventuallypeople are going to catch on.Not surprisingly, he denies it as aploy… and who can blame him? He’sa coach, it’s a competition… mindgames are the poker faces of footy. But this happens at all levels. I’vehad my fair share of coachingmoments, leading the superhero minisquad to victory several times. Doyou think I did this by telling ourexact plans to our competitors, theEvil Scientist Monsters, Magic RealmWarlocks and the Mutant ColonyTurtles?Of course not!If I told my arch nemesis where Iwas going to be, at what time, andwhat I was wearing under my lycrasuit, I’d have been captured manyyears ago.We run a good, honest sportingLeague in South Australia and onewe can take pride in. But wherewould we be without a few sternwords, a couple of comments tothrow us off the scent, and a fewgames with our minds…Andrew Jarman… a man wellknown for his playing and coachingdays. He used to throw off certaincoaches with his side’s selection.Building false hope and a sense ofover confidence for other teams and6Phantomthe ghost that talksBAM! Come game day, there was adifferent line-up on the muddy grass. Some coaches even go a stepfurther. Australian Rules legend and1983 West Adelaide premiershipcoach Neil Kerley, wanted to find outwhether Sturt player and fireman,Geoff Leonard, was going to beselected for the 1983 Grand Finalteam. Kerley had friends within thefire brigade and so allegedly set upfor Leonard to go through a gruelingexercise program. When the Sturtplayer was asked to do it, he said hecouldn’t because he was playing aGrand Final on the weekend andobviously didn’t want to get injuredor overwork his body… Mission‘information collection’: Successful. In the very same game, Kerleymade a switch to his team, standingTony Burgess against Sturt champRick Davies… a shock for Davieswho had played West’s Peter Winterin the previous games. But mind games aren’t always aboutdistracting the opposition. Coachesoften play the game with their ownplayers. Take Malcolm Blight when hewas coaching the Adelaide Crows forexample – remember the gameagainst Richmond at AAMI Stadiumwhen he fled the coaching box 10minutes or so before the final sirensending a message to his players thattheir performance was just not goodenough?Or how about his “Pathetic Pittman”comments in 1997, labeling DavidPittman’s performance in a game inMelbourne as ‘pathetic’. It stuck, andI suppose in this instance it paid offbecause the rest of that seasonturned out to be Pittman’s mostsuccessful – not to mention thatBlight led the team to a premiershipthat year.Blight wasn’t the only one though.Fellow ex-Adelaide Crows coach,Graham Cornes, made his playerswalk over hot coals to get them tothink more about mental strength.Unfortunately, this resulted in burntfeet for Crows champion Nigel Smart. But these tactics aren’t limited tocoaches. Players are just as much apart of the theory as any other. TheGowans twins were big on mindgames. You need look only as far astheir rivalry with Eagles’ JustinCicolella. All three players had anintense rivalry on the field, but playedsimilar mind games with each other, players and umpires – usingaggression and arguments to throwtheir opponents. They had no troublequestioning umpire decisions, undermining authority and bruisingthe confidence of their opponents. How different today’s game is. WhenI sat down this week to write mycolumn, I tried to think what tacticscurrent players and coaches use torival that of our past champions… Itwas a challenge and appears to havebecome less and less in today’sgame, particularly after the retirementof the Gowans twins and Cicolella atthe end of last season. Who knows, maybe we are seeing a newgeneration of hidden mind gamesfiltering through our system – onlyfor my successors to write a columnabout in years to come. Let’s hopethey have some interesting stories totell.Who do you think plays mindgames in the SANFL?Please email or tweet yourthoughts with your name andsuburb through to The Phantom’sCave.Email: phantom@boylen.com.au.@SANFLBudget#sanflphantom

8Fuller trying to getBy Steve BarrettSouth Adelaide coach Ron Fuller chats with emerging midfielder Todd McKay.South Adelaide coach RonFuller has experienced morethan his reasonable share ofsoaring highs and debilitatinglows throughout his footballjourney, which has spanned fiveseparate decades since hissenior SANFL debut in 1979.Fuller has endured agony, in theform of six straight woodenspoons in his first seven seasonsas a player with Woodville in the1980s, and unbridled elation inthe form of Woodville-WestTorrens’ 2006 premiership. He also coached the Eagles tothree straight U17s flags in1998-2000 before the clubendured three shattering GrandFinal losses in his first five yearsas a senior coach. Now in the autumn of hiscareer at Noarlunga, Fullercopped a first-up wooden spoonin 2010, followed up with asurprise Semi-Final berth12 months later and a mix ofgood, bad and ugly thereafter.Throughout it all, andirrespective of ladder position,Fuller has demanded one thingabove all else.“You always want to compete,”he said. “That’s always been anon-negotiable that doesn’t everchange.“When you’re sitting where weare, all the games are tough. There’s no exceptions to it.“One of the things we need todo is be super-competitive all thetime, regardless of anything else– regardless of personnel.“We’ve got to be competitive.”Fuller clocked 235 SANFLgames as a player with theWarriors then the newly-mergedEagles and is on track mid-waythrough the fourth year of a rarefive-year contract with thePanthers.Around three weeks out fromthe end of next season, Fuller ison target to become the seventhperson to crack the 300-gamemark as SANFL coach, behindJack Oatey, Neil Kerley, Fos

9Panthers to purrWilliams, John Cahill, Neil Balmeand Haydn Bunton Junior. For all his immense and topsyturvyexperiences, Fuller is stillbattling to uncover the magicformula behind making South aforce again; a task that haseluded 17 different men sinceNeil Kerley conjured one of theSANFL’s great miracles in 1964.There are times Fuller wisheshe was a mind reader, havingwitnessed the Panthers reallybottoming out this season.Youth is no longer an excusethat washes with Fuller.“It’s not like we’re a younggroup,” he said. “We’ve got someguys who have been arounda while.“We’ve got three or four 100-gameplayers now and you’d expectthem to be leading the charge andshowing the way.”“We’ve got three or four100-game players now and you’dexpect them to be leading thecharge and showing the way.“Maybe it’s a cultural thing, I’mnot sure. Maybe they celebrate awin too much, I really don’t know.“You can’t look inside theplayers’ heads.”Fuller knew the South gig wasnever going to be a smooth ridebut he was expecting more at thisstage of his tenure. He will never stop expecting.“I’ve got confidence in thegroup that we’re good enough,”Fuller said.“But we just need to show itmore often.“We need to be better.”WHITEGOODS CLEARANCEIncludesdelivery &installation^7.5kg FrontloaD waSher• 400 - 1200 rpm variablespin speed• 15 wash programs• 4 star energy ratingWAS24460AU$84912.8LIncludesdelivery &installation^Variocutlerydrawer$109960cm StainleSSSteel DiShwaSher• 15 place settings• 4 Star energy rating,245 kWh per year• 6 wash programs• Vario cutlery drawer• 10 year rust through warranty• H 815-875mm x W 598mmx D 573mm SMU68M05AU64L®EDWARDSTOWNEDWARDSTOWN8292 46008292 4600GEPPS CROSSGEPPS 8300 2300 CROSS8300 2300HECTORVILLEHECTORVILLE8406 35008406 3500MILE ENDMILE 8354 END 35448354 3544NOARLUNGANOARLUNGA8329 00008329 0000®PAY LESS PAY CASH All major credit cards accepted.PAY LESS PAY CASH All major credit cards accepted.Save time thegoodguys.com.auOn sale 28/06/13 to 08/07/13 or while stocks last.
