Champions offootball pastAnna KantilaftasGraham Cornes and Chris McDermott. We often talk about football’spast greats – names such asBarrie Robran, Michael Aish,Graham Cornes, Russell Ebert andRick Davies are some of the firstthat come to mind. But with the ever-changing faceof football, we wonder if thegreats of the past would still beconsidered among the greatplayers of today’s football. When comparing today’s game tothe past, it is evident that playershave been made to adapt andimprove their abilities to suit theincreased emphasis on fine tuningrules and reducing injuries. In football now, there is anincreased defensive focus and theimportance is shifting from the longkick to the chip and handball. Sohow would the famous footballersof the past play today and wouldthe same names be known?Michael Aish is considered one ofthe greatest players of his time, having played more than 300games for the Norwood FootballClub. He won the Magarey Medal in1981, captained the side from1987-89, and played 15 state games. He believes the game has becomemuch quicker and possibly morephysical than it was when heplayed in the 1980s.“By being quicker it’s possiblymore physically demanding. It ismore of a possession game, theycertainly try to hang onto it longerand then when there is an openingthey chip it forward,” Aish said. However, despite these changesin the game, Aish believes thatplayers from the past would still begreat footballers now.“I think from a skill level point ofview, they would cope without anyproblem at all.“The only question would be thephysical ability and the speed.“But I think good players wouldpick that up, once they are exposedto it you’ve just got to adapt.”Aish said it is dedication, loveof the game and sportsmanship, that would allow individuals toplay good football irrespectiveof the era.“It is their (a good footballer’s)dedication to wanting to be the bestor to get better.“They will work on their fitnessand their skill level more thanmost,” he said. The question Aish raises is, whatattributes make a championfootballer and do these attributesallow them to be champions inany era?Clearly he believes it would, asplayer’s work ethic, discipline and

Modern-day player Greg Gallman.5desire for excellence will allowthem to excel in any era.Graham Cornes agrees withthe Norwood great: “If you tookthose players from 30 years ago, they wouldn’t be as fit and strongbut if you subject those playersto the same kind of trainingprograms they would do just aswell,” he said.“We would have developed thoseskills needed for today’s game.”Cornes said in his experience asa Glenelg premiership player in1973, two-time Glenelg premiershipcoach and his role as the inauguralAdelaide Crows coach, he hadseen the football world go throughthe motions. He notes that today’s game ismore physically demanding whilealso becoming a cleaner spectacle.“What you can’t do is playon natural ability like we did inthe past.“You would have to adapt to thedisciplines of today’s game. If youthrew a champion team of the pastinto a game today against, sayGeelong, they would probablybe beaten.”Michael Aish.Greg Gallman, a current defensiveplayer for the North AdelaideFootball club agrees with Cornes.“I think if a player is consideredone the greats of his time, the skillset and abilities that he has, wouldbe transferable between eras,”Gallman said. With just four years experienceplaying SANFL football for NorthAdelaide and having spent timewith the Adelaide Crows as arookie, Gallman has experiencedhis fair share of football at aprofessional level. However, while Gallman is amodern-day footballer, he notesthe differences in today’s footballwhen compared to the past.“The major difference (from thepast) is that most of today’sfootballers are consideredprofessional athletes and thereforehave the time to focus on thegame development as their maincareer path.“Players going back 50 years agocould not live off an income fromfootball alone and needed to holddown a fulltime job.“The type of training comparedto even ten years ago is completelydifferent.“In previous years, a lot of thetraining focus was on aerobicfitness and strength.“Coaches now will conditionplayer’s bodies in respect toagility, power, flexibility for injuryprevention and short-termanaerobic fitness.”Nevertheless, Gallman believes agreat footballer is not only forgedthrough his football abilities butalso his influence on the result ofthe game despite the conditionsor opponent.“The great players have the abilityto influence the players aroundthem, as a true leader.”With new rules entering thesystem every year, and changesin both the SANFL and AFL itwould seem that our beloved sportwill continue changing for manymore years.Would these greats of football stillbe considered a champion if theywere playing in today’s game?Cornes and Aish are examples ofprevious greats of the game thatbelieve if you subject great playersof the past to the same trainingand conditioning that the teamsendure today, there is no doubtthat they would still be amongthe greats.Nevertheless, the champions offootball’s past will continue toremain champions in the heartsand minds of football supportersacross the SANFL and AFLregardless of the modificationsto the game.

NELSON9Ben NelsonPhoto Courtesy Peter Argent.“I couldn’t believe my luck as Iwas a Carlton supporter from thePeter Motley days.“David Parkin was a greatcoach and there were some greatplayers like (Stephen) Kernahanand (Greg) Williams.“I hardly said a word in my firstyear but as the confidence grew Iended up playing 40 odd games ina five-year period.“It was great to be part of aclub with a lot of tradition andthere was always past playersaround the club which gave it thatstrong culture.’’Nelson moved back to Adelaidewith his wife, Claire, in 2002 tojoin the Crows under coachGary Ayres.“I had just a short stint of twoyears on the list (for 12 games) butit was great to experience a newclub with the new facilitiescompared to the more traditionalCarlton changerooms.’’Nelson said he was notdisappointed about his time in theAFL.“We all worked pretty hard and Iprobably reached a level where theyounger kids were improving morerapidly than I was.“I love playing in the SANFLbecause it’s a great semiprofessionalcompetition, fullof history.“The footy is competitive and Ireckon most of the people watchingenjoy the contest. I also love whatthe footy club brings and that isgood blokes working hard for apremiership with a bit of fun alongthe way.’’He said his family had had thebiggest influence on his career.“Both Mum and Dad were verysupportive of my brother Cam(Cameron) and I from a young ageand gave us every opportunity.“I don’t think Dad ever knockedus back when we asked to havea kick of the footy and I’m sureMum and Dad would have clockedup a few kilometres driving usaround as kids as well as the tripsto Melbourne.“Cameron and I along with theold man kicked the footy around inthe backyard from a young age butit wasn’t till Year 5 or about 10 yearsold when I started playing for myprimary school.’’Nelson is kept busy outside offootball with his work at the familybusiness, which sells uniformsand promotional products tosporting clubs, schools and thecorporate sector. He and Claire have three children– Alexandra, Evie and Jack.STURT football operationsmanager Duane Massey paidtribute to Ben Nelson as anoutstanding person, player andleader of the club.“Ben and his brother Cameronalong with father Sandy have allplayed for the Sturt Football Clubover many years.“We’d like to congratulate Ben onreaching such a significantmilestone that I’m sure Ben and hiswhole family would be proud of.’’Philip “Sandy’’ Nelson played244 games with Sturt inthe SANFL from 1966 to 1977.He played in sevenpremiership teams during histime at Sturt and played mainlyas a centre-half back.Sandy represented SouthAustralia in 10 interstatematches, including carnivals in1969 and 1972.In 2004, he was inducted intothe South Australian FootballHall of Fame.

TheA changing faceThanks to all of those football fanswho have sent mail to the cave. The topics have varied and I want totouch on a few today. One of the most common themes isto compare football in this currentage as opposed to the 80s and 90s.That is so easy to do!Players cannot get away withanything today and the days of thewhack behind the play are gone forgood. It never did take any courageto thump someone behind play orthrow in a sly blow in the middle ofa pack.All-in-blues were only ever going toresult in reports and suspensionsand that doesn’t help anyone. Theumpires often got writer’s cramp asthey stood back and scratched outthe numbers of the combatants. Timeaway from the game is no benefit. What did happen was that thecrowd would become agitated and itoften meant that rival supporterscould lose the plot. Let’s reallybe honest. We all may have likedthe occasional biffo but that isnow history. In the current scheme of things it’sall about playing the ball only.Sometimes I get irritated that a bumpmight cause a possible suspensionbut, if it’s fair for everyone, thereshould be no argument.Supporters answer the callOne thing that has not changed isthe way we barrack. The favouritefour letter word is ‘Ball!’Count how many times you hear itwhen you next go to the football. Theabuse continues for the umpires but Ido not think that will ever change. There is nothing creative andimaginative about some of the vocaltones and some supporters justseem content to scream until theirfaces turn blue.Try and keep a lid on it! Pleaseenjoy yourself and really be creative.12Phantomthe ghost that talksJust don’t frighten the living daylightsout of the people around you. Beaware that they too want to enjoy thegame so don’t spoil their fun.Which club do you think has thebest supporters? I love the chantfrom the Dogs fans. It sends a shiverdown my spine every time I hear it.Over the next few weeks I plan onbeing just a face in the crowd andwatching to see how the variousteams organise their faithful clan andget them to cheer. There are always pockets of clubcolours splattered around thegrounds and it would not take toomuch of an effort to get them alltogether. There is nothing moreinspiring than to see your team’scolours all in the one spot andmaking so much noise.Coaching mattersIs there a place in the SANFL seniorlevel for a playing coach? I sayabsolutely yes! What about a playerlike Tyson Edwards who is just out ofthe game? How good would it be to see him incontrol of a League team with all ofthe skill and knowledge that hegathered at the Crows? If he wasconfident his body could hold up Ireally think that a player like Edwardswould be a real winner.Try remembering the recentlyretired players and put to one sidethose who you think walked awayfrom the game with healthy bodies. ALeague club is going to snare oneshortly and the impact made couldbe enormous.Who is the best coach in theLeague? Is the one who guides histeam to the flag always the numberone choice?Roy Laird is a gun. He seems to beable to get the right mixture togetherevery year. The credit must go to allat the club but the coach must take alarge slice of the pie.Andrew Collins is making a namefor himself and Nathan Bassett is avery impressive individual. If youhad to rank them, which orderwould you go with?First class facilitiesI visited the Crows camp duringthe week and was most impressedwith the set-up particularly in wherethe player’s lockers are. When you open them up you aregreeted with a screen that shows aprofile of the player/players whohave worn the respective jumpers. An innovation is the boots andjumper of the player who has retiredis now hung up in the locker.Tyson Edwards now has the gearthat he wore in his last game in hislocker. The club policy is that eachplayer on the field for the last timewill change gear at half-time so thathe can keep the first pair of bootsand the top for himself. It is a reallygood idea!Shaun Rehn has one of his kneebraces in his locker and it’s so big.Word is that his son Tom is alreadytaller than his father. It’s official by the way! The week ofrain may have sodden the sportinggrounds around the state butit certainly hasn’t dampenedmy spirits.Winter is here and I hope theheavens continue to cry consistentlyand the farmers will be evenhappier. The SANFL season isstarting to get really serious. I lookforward to sharing some thoughtswith you next week.Drop me a line at the cave!YOUR THOUGHTSsend your thoughts through tothe SA Footy Budgetjmurphy@boylen.com.au
