b. Where the desirable limits above cannot be met, individual<br />
class sizes may be exceeded as follows:<br />
Advanced Academic/<br />
Academic/University: desirable maximum + 3<br />
All others: desirable maximum + 2<br />
c. A multi-level class is one in which there is one (1) or more<br />
pupils of different level from the rest of the pupils.<br />
d. The class size maxima are outlined on the chart on page 58<br />
of this Collective Agreement.<br />

e. A joint committee of the Branch Affiliate and the Board<br />
shall be convened to study and to make<br />
recommendations on appropriate class size guideline<br />
modifications needed when pupils with special needs are<br />
assigned to regular classes. The Board shall appoint<br />
three (3) members to the committee and the Branch<br />
Affiliate shall appoint three (3) members. All<br />
recommendations of the committee shall be subject to<br />
amendment through the normal negotiating process and<br />
shall not bind either party until ratified.<br />
f. The President of the Branch Affiliate shall be supplied<br />
with a current list of the number of students enrolled at<br />
each level in each teacher’s class and a copy of each<br />
teacher’s timetable on October 1 st in semestered and<br />
non-semestered schools and February 23 rd in<br />
semestered schools. Class size guidelines shall comply<br />
with this Article by October 15 th in semestered and nonsemestered<br />
schools and February 28 th in semestered<br />
schools.<br />
g. Staff Monitoring Committee<br />
The Staff Monitoring Committee shall consist of three (3)<br />
representatives of the Branch Affiliate and three (3)<br />
representatives of the Board. The Board shall provide, by<br />
April 1 st , to the Branch Affiliate the student enrolment<br />
projections, the projections of the system staff complement<br />
and the projected departmental structure in each school. The<br />
Committee shall meet by October 31 st and March 31 st to<br />
review class sizes. In the spring of 2004, the Committee<br />
shall review the class size guidelines and class size maxima<br />
and make recommendations (if any), for changes for the<br />
2004-2005 school year. Each spring, the Committee shall<br />
review the class size guidelines and class size maxima and<br />
make recommendations for the deployment of the new<br />
teaching positions each school year with the proviso that at<br />
least two thirds (⅔) of any such positions must directly<br />
address the Student Success initiative outlined by the<br />
Ministry of Education.
